The mother and daughter leaned against the window, silently cursing in their hearts.
Knowing Chen Feng's temperament, when faced with such a situation, she would definitely rush into the house, overturn the table, and start cursing loudly, causing chaos throughout the entire family before she could feel relieved.
However, both she and Shen Yuqin had been beaten by Shen Jingyan more than once, and they felt both resentment and fear towards Shen Jingyan.
I dared not throw a tantrum, but could only curse a few times in my heart to vent my frustration.
"Hey, isn't this Dafeng and Yuqin? When did they get back? Why are they sneaking around like this? If you haven't done anything wrong, why are you afraid of being seen?"
After finishing her meal, Grandma Xu went out for a walk. As soon as she lifted the curtain, she saw the shifty-looking Chen Feng and Shen Yuqin.
Grandma Xu spoke loudly, with a hint of sarcasm in her tone.
Chen Feng and Shen Yuqin were so frightened they almost jumped up.
"No, no sneaking around! We just didn't see Gangzi and Anzi when we got home, so we came to Jingya's place to look for them."
Chen Feng said, her eyes darting around.
Shen Yuqin didn't even dare to look at Grandma Xu's face.
The last time she smashed the window and caused trouble, she pushed Grandma Xu down in the snow, injuring the old woman's back. She had to lie on the kang (a heated brick bed) for six or seven days to recover.
Because she maliciously injured someone, she was severely criticized and interrogated by the inspection team, who grabbed her by the hair.
She didn't dare look at Grandma Xu, not because she felt guilty; she never felt she had done anything wrong.
I felt a little guilty and couldn't accept Grandma Xu's accusing and disdainful look.
"Why did you come back so quietly? This isn't like you."
Grandma Xu continued her sarcastic remarks, "Look at you, you've been at your parents' house for over ten days and haven't gained any weight. What, your parents can't even afford to give you two a decent meal?"
When Chen Feng thought about the unpleasant things that happened at her parents' home, even her thick skin felt a little embarrassed.
She pulled Shen Yuqin along without saying a word and headed home.
"Aunt, Sister, you're back! Why don't you come inside?"
Shen Jingyan came out after hearing Grandma Xu's voice.
Although Shen Honggang was somewhat drunk, he was still relatively clear-headed and followed them out.
Chen Feng was caught red-handed by Shen Honggang while she was sneaking around peeking through the window, and she was extremely frustrated.
When Shen Yuqin saw Shen Jingyan, her face was fair and delicate, and she stood tall and graceful like a willow branch. Her eyes were as sharp as knives, and she wished she could cut her pretty face a few times.
"You're back." Shen Honggang looked at the disheveled mother and daughter and said calmly, "Are you back to settle down and start a new life, or to continue causing trouble?"
Looking at Shen Honggang's calm and indifferent face, Chen Feng couldn't muster any of her usual tantrums and shamelessness.
She could feel that Shen Honggang's attitude towards her had changed; he was no longer as indulgent towards her as before.
This gave her a great sense of unease.
Chen Feng forced a smile onto her chubby face: "Look at what you're saying, haven't we always been doing quite well..."
Shen Honggang's lips twitched a few times. He looked at Shen Jingyan, then at Chen Feng and Shen Yuqin, mother and daughter.
He wanted to say something to persuade Shen Jingyan to reconcile with Chen Feng and her daughter, but he felt that this wish could not be fulfilled in a short time.
So he changed his mind and said, "Let's go home."
"I'm so sorry, Auntie, Sister. If you had come earlier, we could have had lunch. It's a pity that all the food on the table is gone now, and there are only a few bones left. We can only feed them to the dog."
Shen Jingyan smiled sarcastically and said, "Aunt, I'm not like you. I won't give you dog food."
This statement is a blatant accusation of Chen Feng's past mistreatment of Shen Jingyan.
The original owner was often forced to eat leftovers, and sometimes those leftovers were even worse than pig or dog swill.
After hearing this, Grandma Xu spat on the ground and said angrily, "Some people are even worse than pigs and dogs!"
To save face for Shen Honggang, she didn't say anything more hurtful and went back into the house with her sleeves rolled up.
Shen Honggang went back inside, put on his coat, and took Chen Feng and her daughter home.
Looking at Shen Honggang's tall and profound back, Shen Jingyan sighed silently.
After finishing her meal, Anzi wiped her greasy mouth and ran out to play with her friends.
He peered out the window and saw Chen Feng and Shen Yuqin, but he didn't go out or talk to them.
Children can be carefree. Anzi felt that even without his mother and sister, his life hadn't changed much, since Chen Feng hadn't really doted on him since he was little.
So whether Chen Feng and Shen Yuqin come back or not, he doesn't care at all.
All he needs is his father and Sister Jingya.
When Grandma Xu entered the house, Old Xu was squinting, drinking a little wine, and eating the glutinous rice balls that Chen Jingyan had given him, looking like he was enjoying himself immensely.
Grandma Xu sat down on the kang and began to sigh: "Hey, tell me, when Gangzi was young, he was one of the most handsome young men in the surrounding villages. If his parents hadn't died early and he had a sister, he wouldn't have ended up with a wife from a poor family, and that spendthrift woman Dafeng got him."
Old Xu took a sip of his wine and said, "It's their business, don't worry about it. Besides, they already have four children, and Qiangzi's wife is pregnant. They're going to be grandparents soon. Just make do, that's all they'll ever be."
"I dare say that Yunxia saw through Dafeng a long time ago, and went back to her parents' home to rest as soon as she got pregnant."
Grandma Xu kept rambling on, "If she doesn't go back to her parents' home, Da Feng won't be willing to give her daughter-in-law any good things."
The "Yunxia" that Grandma Xu mentioned is Pan Yunxia, Shen Zhiqiang's wife. After she became pregnant, she strongly requested that Shen Zhiqiang take her back to her parents' home to rest during her pregnancy.
Because of this incident, there was a lot of gossip about Chen Feng in the village. Everyone said that it was because of her mother-in-law's meanness that her daughter-in-law went back to her parents' home.
Chen Feng didn't care; it was better not to stay home to rest during her pregnancy, since she still had plenty of food left over.
"Luckily, Jingya subdued her, otherwise, with all that wickedness, she might have tried to frame Jingya in some way!"
Grandma Xu mumbled a few more words, then suddenly remembered something, wrapped her cotton coat tighter around herself, and went outside.
"Jingya, Jingya?"
Shen Jingyan was washing dishes with Gu Zhiyun when Grandma Xu walked in.
When she entered the house and saw the two of them washing dishes in perfect harmony, she was momentarily dazed.
They look just like a young married couple living their daily lives.
"Grandma, what's wrong?" Shen Jingyan asked.
Grandma Xu said with a smile, "I cooked a big pot of glutinous rice balls. After distributing them to the educated youth, there were still quite a few left. Go and get a bowl, otherwise your grandfather and I won't be able to finish them."
Shen Jingyan nodded readily: "Okay, I'll go get it!"
She had experienced Grandma Xu's enthusiasm firsthand, so whatever Grandma Xu offered, Shen Jingyan would accept.
Otherwise, the old lady might come knocking on the window in the middle of the night with pots and pans to deliver things.
Shen Jingyan took a clean large bowl, and Gu Zhiyun reached out and took it from her.
"Jingya, it's cold outside, I'll go get it."
Grandma Xu nodded hurriedly: "Yes, yes, Xiao Gu can go too!"
Her goal was simply to separate the two of them so she could find an opportunity to probe their intentions.
Gu Zhiyun followed Grandma Xu out of the house and headed towards the main house.
Grandma Xu patted Gu Zhiyun on the shoulder and asked with a kind smile, "Little Gu, how old are you this year?"
