It was the weekend, and the bus was packed with people; there were no seats left.
Gu Zhiyun put the suitcase down, held onto the railing with one hand and protected Shen Jingyan's waist with the other, using his tall body to protect Shen Jingyan from being jostled by others.
Shen Jingyan leaned against Gu Zhiyun with a sense of security.
As soon as Feng Ximan stepped onto the bus, her face was filled with disgust.
She covered her mouth with a handkerchief and took a few difficult steps forward.
Gu Huaicheng looked around and, seeing that there were no seats, said to a young woman sitting on a priority seat next to him, "Hey, stand up and give my wife a seat. She's wearing high heels and can't stand up."
The young woman touched her stomach and said, "Excuse me, sir, I'm pregnant."
Gu Huaicheng glanced at her stomach and said, "Really? You don't look pregnant at all?"
The young woman was deeply offended and angrily said, "Sir, don't you have any common sense? A woman's pregnancy isn't immediately obvious. I'm only four months pregnant; isn't it normal not to be showing yet?"
Anyone with a sound mind would shut up at this point, but Gu Huaicheng and Feng Ximan have probably lived in the US for too long and their minds are a bit off; they're still harping on about it.
Feng Ximan said sarcastically, "You say you're pregnant, but I can't see your belly. Who knows if you're lying to grab a seat?"
Her words were so outrageous that even the middle-aged woman standing nearby couldn't stand it anymore and retorted angrily, "You're not missing any limbs, will you die if you stand for a while? If you're so delicate, don't go out, or hire a sedan chair to carry you! Why are you taking the bus if you can't handle it!"
The argument attracted the ticket seller (in the 1980s, buses still had manual ticketing), who said righteously, "This lady takes this bus every day, and she is indeed pregnant. I can testify to that."
Amidst the strange looks from everyone in the car, Feng Ximan and Gu Huaicheng finally gave up.
After getting off the bus, Feng Ximan kept complaining: "The quality of Chinese people is absolutely terrible! I've never encountered anyone like this in the US! What bad luck, what a terrible thing!"
Shen Jingyan couldn't stand it anymore and said coldly, "Since you think Chinese people are not of high quality, why did you come back? Wouldn't it be better to live in a big house in the United States and enjoy being chauffeured around in a private car?"
She forcefully took the pregnant woman's seat and then argued vehemently, slandering Chinese people for lacking manners. Isn't this just being a Western-worshipper? If you despise China so much, why don't you go back to your American daddy's embrace!
If Old Man Xu were to encounter someone like this, he would definitely teach him a lesson!
Upon hearing this, Feng Ximan's face darkened even further.
She doesn't want to come back. If she hadn't gone bankrupt in the US and couldn't make a living there, would she have suffered this kind of humiliation?
Gu Huaicheng was afraid that if Feng Ximan and Shen Jingyan got into a fight, it would be even harder to ask for money, so he could only keep comforting his wife.
"Just a little longer, just a little longer, we'll be there soon."
Upon arriving at the farm, before they even entered the gate, the farm's cats and dogs happily ran out to greet them.
Several cats meowed around Shen Jingyan and Gu Zhiyun's legs, while others lay down on the ground, rolling over and acting cute. The puppy wagged its tail and hopped along with them.
Shen Jingyan picked up a small black dog, and Gu Zhiyun picked up a small tabby cat, scratching their ears as they walked.
The cats and dogs here are fed very affectionately and are not afraid of Gu Huaicheng and Feng Ximan, two strangers.
A little white kitten, just a month old, tried to rub against Feng Ximan's shoes, but Feng Ximan kicked it away in disgust.
"Get out of here! So many beasts, why don't you tie them up? What if they bite someone!"
The little white kitten was barely the size of a palm, and it couldn't withstand an adult's kick. It was kicked far away and rolled in the grass, meowing incessantly. Just then, the kitten's mother was also there. When she saw her kitten being bullied, she immediately pounced fiercely on Feng Ximan's legs, scratching and biting.
Feng Ximan screamed in fright.
Shen Jingyan called out "Hua Hua," and the mother cat stopped biting, ran to her feet, and meowed as if she were complaining.
Gu Zhiyun picked up the little white kitten, held it in his arms, and carefully checked it over to make sure it wasn't injured before placing it at its mother's feet.
The mother cat made a sound that resembled an attack towards Feng Ximan. Shen Jingyan soothed her for a few moments before she picked up the little white kitten by the neck and returned to the nest to lick its fur.
Feng Ximan looked at her elegant cheongsam, now ripped apart by the cat, and launched into a tirade of curses, her face contorted with rage. "Isn't a farm for growing crops? Why are you raising so many animals?"
Shen Jingyan felt that Feng Ximan's behavior was more like that of an animal.
"When a kitten rubs against your leg, it means it likes you and wants to be close to you. If you don't like it, you can move away; you shouldn't hurt it."
She said coldly, "Mother cats are very protective of their kittens; their maternal love is no less than that of humans. If your kittens were kicked, would you just stand by and do nothing?"
Feng Ximan retorted angrily, "I am a human being! How can an animal compare to a human?"
"Animals are living beings too, they have spirits too. Some people are even worse than animals."
Feng Ximan's face turned pale with anger: "Who are you calling a beast?"
Shen Jingyan curled her lips in a sarcastic smile and said, "Anyone who overthinks it is just criticizing them!"
Gu Huaicheng quickly stepped forward to smooth things over: "Let's all keep quiet. It's not worth it over a cat!"
What Gu Zhiyun had just witnessed appeared to be his wife being bullied. He finally spoke his first words of the day to Gu Huaicheng: "Fourth Uncle, Aunt doesn't seem to like the farm very much. Perhaps you should take her back? There are plenty of animals here, most of them free-range. If she offends Aunt again, we'll be in a lot of responsibility."
Shen Jingyan turned her head away and rolled her eyes inwardly.
Since you're a pampered young lady who never lifts a finger, don't come to the fields and pretend to be someone who loves labor.
They're really going to great lengths for a little money!
Gu Huaicheng gave a dry laugh, "Hehe, it's nothing, it's nothing. Your aunt really likes small animals; she was just startled."
Shen Jingyan sneered.
Do you like small animals?
I like small animals, but I can't bring myself to kick a kitten with my high heels.
Gu Zhiyun didn't reply, but continued walking into the farm while holding Shen Jingyan's hand.
When Feng Ximan saw the yard full of chickens, ducks, geese, and pigs, he almost fainted.
"What kind of awful place is this! It's filthy and stinks! Is this a place for a human to stay?"
Shen Jingyan was already very impatient. She didn't care about elders or anything like that; she didn't even want to give them a smile. She said directly, "Auntie, a fairy like you shouldn't be here. Please, don't experience human suffering here. Go back quickly!" Gu Huaicheng pulled Feng Ximan aside and pleaded in a low voice, "Good wife, just bear with it a little longer. I'll definitely find a way to get Jingya to sell the farm today!"
