Chapter 23 The Hateful Nanny
Li Mutou also woke up and was half leaning against the wall, coughing softly. He was very happy to see Li Ruanruan.
Because Li Runrun earned some money, she bought some rice and cooked porridge on the stove, so at least she could make a living again.
Li Runrun sat down to eat breakfast and asked Li Da to apply medicine to her brother.
After she finished her bowl of rice, she heard Li Mutou say, "This medicine is amazing. It doesn't hurt as much after I apply it."
Li Ruanruan was eating pickles and porridge, and nodded when she heard it: "You will feel much better by tomorrow, and you can go out in the fields in two days."
Li Mutou was very surprised: "So powerful? It's worthy of being something used by the prince. The medicine in it must be hard to find."
Li Ruanruan hadn't thought about it. She was stunned for a moment after hearing this, and then said, "When you're done, apply the medicine to Daddy as well."
Li Da immediately said, "I have thick skin and flesh, and I didn't get whipped many times. I'm almost healed. There's no need."
Li Ruanruan was very persistent: "Yes, Daddy also wants to get better soon."
As they were talking, Nanny Song came over and banged on the door, cursing, "You don't have to work anymore, right? Are you leaving this stinking chamber pot for me to clean? Believe it or not, I'll give you a few more lashes."
Nanny Song looked in through the crack of the broken door and continued to curse: "Where did you get the money to eat your own food? Get out of here, do you really think I can't deal with you? Believe it or not, I will report you to the steward and sell you out."
Li Runrun opened the door of the room, and Nanny Song looked like she wanted to go in and kick the small stove they used for eating.
She had always relied on her position as a small housekeeper to act tyrannically. Not only did she withhold the monthly wages of these low-ranking servants, she also withheld their food and often beat and scolded them.
Li Ruanruan used to be very afraid of her, but now she pushed her out fiercely. She didn't know where she got the courage from, but she said, "Yesterday, Miss Ye wanted to sell me out, and the prince was furious. He said that no one could sell me out without his consent. Go and report it, and see if the steward dares to sell me out without the prince's consent."
Nanny Song was really frightened by Li Runrun's behavior, and the next second she reached out and grabbed Li Runrun's arm hard.
He pinched the soft flesh of the pear again and again: "You are so bold, you dare to use the prince to pressure me? I'm telling you, don't think I don't know that the prince hates you. If he really liked you, he would have given you a place to live long ago. Why let you live in this doghouse?"
Li Ruanruan covered her arm that was pinched and hurt, and pushed Nanny Song away fiercely.
Nanny Song put her hands on her hips and scolded Li Ruanruan who was working like a shrew: "What kind of person is the prince? Who are you? I've only been seeing you for a few days, and you really think you're the master? You're just a maid in the same room. As long as you live here, I'll take care of you! If you don't clean these chamber pots, you still want to eat shit!"
Li Da hurriedly stood up and came out, bowing to Aunt Song and apologizing: "Don't be angry, Aunt, I already cleaned a lot of this chamber pot yesterday, and I will definitely finish it today."
Nanny Song felt a little relieved when she saw Li Da bending over to work and Li Ruanruan also fetching water to work.
With her hands on her hips, she continued to curse: "You said the prince is so precious, why would he like a lowly girl like you? Could it be that he likes the smell of urine on you?"
Li Runrun dropped the wooden barrel heavily onto the ground, and the splashing water hit Nanny Song, splashing her all over.
Nanny Song rolled up her sleeves and gritted her teeth, "Today, I will teach you a lesson on behalf of the young master, you unruly little vixen."
Nanny Song came over and was about to slap Li Runruan, but Li Runruan frowned and turned her head away.
"stop!"
Ye Qiaoqiao shouted harshly, grabbed Nanny Song's wrist, pushed her away, and angrily shouted, "You dare to hit the young master's people? Don't you want to live?"
When Nanny Song saw that the visitor was the Second Young Miss, she first bowed and saluted, then smiled apologetically: "This place is so dirty. Second Young Miss is so delicate, why are you here? What do you want, Madam or Master?"
"I'm here to find Ruanruan."
Ye Qiaoqiao took a quick glance and frowned fiercely, as if she had not expected that Li Runrun was already the prince's concubine, yet was still living this kind of life.
No wonder her hands were covered with scars. The last time I saw her, she was using tools to polish off the calluses in order to facilitate embroidery. The embroidery fabric was precious, and she was afraid that the calluses on her hands would snag the fabric. It looked painful.
I thought she had calluses from doing rough work in the past, but I didn't expect that she was still doing this kind of menial work.
Ye Qiaoqiao felt sorry for her, her eyes reddening. Without a trace of disdain, she held the icy hand of Pear Soft Jelly, rubbing it and then lowering her head to breathe on it to warm her. "Why are you still doing this kind of work?"
In her heart, Li Runrun was already her best friend, so she naturally couldn't bear to see Li Runrun suffer.
Without waiting for Li Ruanruan to speak, Ye Qiaoqiao coldly ordered Nanny Song: "Li Ruanruan doesn't need to do this kind of menial work anymore. Find someone else to do it. She has more important things to do."
Nanny Song immediately said, taking advantage of her seniority: "If the daughter doesn't do it, then the father should do more. Otherwise, who else can we expect to do it?"
Ye Qiaoqiao glanced at the limping Li Da and said in a strong tone, "Li Ruanruan's father doesn't need to be one either. I told you to find someone else, and if you can't find one, you'll take the job. Is that hard to understand? Or is it that Madam is deaf at such a young age? If she's useless, I'll report it to Mother and dismiss Madam and go back to live out my retirement."
When Nanny Song heard this, she was quite frightened, but she had an affair with the steward and was also controlling the lower-ranking servants.
She was somewhat dissatisfied but not afraid of the second young lady, a concubine's daughter who had no power. If there was no legitimate daughter in the marquis's mansion, it would be fine, but there was an eldest young lady in front of her.
Ye Qiaoqiao was not raised by the Madam, but by her aunt. She is not close to the Madam, so what kind of person is she?
Nanny Song began to speak sarcastically, "This job was already arranged. The Second Young Lady said she doesn't want them to do it anymore. Are you still going to pay them this month's salary?"
"Of course we have to give them money. They have only received a few months' salary. Can't the Marquisate afford it? Or are you just greedy?"
Nanny Song bowed and said, "Second Miss, what are you talking about? I have been managing these lowly servants for over ten years and have never been lazy in my duties. But when have I ever been greedy for their monthly wages?"
Li Runrun thought to herself that she had been very greedy. Because of Nanny Song's harshness, people died of freezing or disease every winter. The lives of these low-ranking slaves were worth less than those of ants.
Ye Qiaoqiao also felt that this nanny was difficult to deal with. She narrowed her eyes slightly and was a little angry, but she didn't show it.
Li Runrun discovered that she and Ye Yunchu were siblings after all. They were somewhat similar when angry, but neither was as scary as Ye Yunchu.
She gently grasped Ye Qiaoqiao's hand and said, "No need to argue for me."
Ye Qiaoqiao seemed not to hear, her voice only becoming colder: "It's good that Madam didn't say anything. Just follow my instructions."
"I don't quite understand. Does the Second Young Lady mean to feed them for free? I don't know whether I should report this to the steward and the Madam, or whether the Second Young Lady is now the one in charge of the Marquis's Mansion. I don't know when the situation in the Marquis's Mansion changed, and when did the Second Young Lady have the final say?!"
Nanny Song suddenly raised her voice, her face was hateful, and she was so sarcastic that her expression was twisted and hideous, as if she was going to eat Ye Qiaoqiao in the next second.
