Chapter 46 Rainy Season and Holidays
The busy farming season is approaching, and the production team needs a lot of straw ropes. The rapeseed, rice and barley in the fields are waiting to be harvested and bundled.
A bundle of straw ropes was exchanged for one work point. If one was quick and nimble, a bundle could be collected in half an hour. Compared with the female comrades who used to work all day under the scorching sun to earn only six or eight work points, this job was an easy and lucrative one. But for Lu Miao, it was extremely tiring.
Although this work is not heavy, it is very tiring. When you are busy, straw foam and dust will fly onto your body, which is not only itchy but also very choking.
Lu Miao participated for two days. When he slept at night, he felt like he had asthma. His breathing was slightly obstructed and he coughed constantly. It was a respiratory infection caused by inhaling too much dust.
Ren Bingxin heard her coughing until she was hoarse, and worriedly advised:
"You can't do this. Why don't you go to the fields tomorrow? Talk to your aunt. She can always arrange something easier."
"The busy farming season is coming up soon, and everyone's rushing to harvest. How can there be any easy work?"
Lu Miao shook his head.
Now the daytime temperature outside is gradually approaching 30 degrees. Lu Miao feels it is unbearable in this weather. If he really wants to relax, he can do nothing and just lie in the house. That would be the easiest way.
Besides, if I don’t perform well now to improve my “attendance rate”, the production team leader will definitely be more dissatisfied if I want to ask for leave and be lazy when the busy farming season comes.
Lu Miao was very clear about her own positioning. She definitely couldn't hold on in such a hot summer day. It would be better for her to perform well now so that others would have less to say later.
But then again, if you still plan to twist the straw rope, you should really make some preparations, otherwise the scratchy feeling in your throat alone will be uncomfortable enough.
As soon as the kerosene lamp in the room went out, Lu Miao half-raised himself and tilted his head to look at Ren Bingxin's bed.
It was pitch black and couldn't see anything, but that didn't hinder communication. "Ren Bingxin, how's your sewing going? I remember you brought some needle and thread."
"Yeah, didn't I pick your blisters last time?"
Lu Miao asked with an "Oh" and quickly sat up, "A needle and thread will be good, Ren Bingxin, I need your help!"
Ren Bingxin asked lazily, "What's up?"
Lu Miao didn't say anything. He asked Ren Bingxin to light the kerosene lamp. After finding a navy blue coat, the two of them went to the main hall together. "Let's talk outside so as not to disturb them."
Lu Miao had never used needlework before. She felt that since Ren Bingxin brought these things, she must have some skills. She didn't require them to look good, as long as they were practical.
Handing the clothes to Ren Bingxin, Lu Miao told her what he wanted.
It's actually a mask and sleeves.
Ren Bingxin understood, but she had a little doubt about Lu Miao's arrangement. "Such a nice coat, it's still new! You're going to cut it right away?"
Lu Miao had a sore throat and didn't want to talk, so he nodded.
Ren Bingxin saw her expression and knew she was determined, so she stopped trying to persuade her. "I'll take off these two sleeves, sew two masks for you on the top part of the sleeves, and tighten the two ends of the bottom part to make a shorter sleeve. Is that okay?"
Ren Bingxin took off her sleeves and gestured to Lu Miao:
"So, I can alter the rest of the jacket for you when I have time later so it's wearable."
Lu Miao nodded. "Just follow the arrangements. If it's not too much trouble, then I'll do as you say."
A mosquito flew in front of him with a buzzing sound, and Lu Miao chased after it and swatted it.
The kerosene lamp had limited light, and the mosquito quickly hid in the shadows and disappeared. Lu Miao made a "tsk" sound, feeling annoyed that she hadn't hit the mosquito. Ren Bingxin looked at her as if she didn't care about what was happening outside and sighed in worry.
"If you're not in a hurry, why not go to town and buy two feet of cloth when you have time? It would be great. Why would you tear up such a nice dress?"
"You said you weren't in a hurry, but I am." Lu Miao sat cross-legged on a long bench, his chin resting on his hand as he sat across the table from Ren Bingxin. "Listen to my voice. What's wrong with me?"
Ren Bingxin sighed and had nothing to say.
The masks and sleeves are both simple little things, but due to the poor lighting and Ren Bingxin's meticulous needlework, it took her about forty minutes to finish them.
Lu Miao tried it on, and if there was anything that wasn't right, Ren Bingxin adjusted it for her on the spot. When everything was finally settled, she grabbed the mask sleeve and put her arm around Ren Bingxin's arm, kissing her intimately:
"Ren Bingxin, you are so kind! You saved me from a dire situation!"
"I've always been very discriminating. You've helped me a lot this time. If something good happens in the future, I'll definitely think of you first!"
"What's the big deal? Isn't it our duty to help each other?" Ren Bingxin held the kerosene lamp with both hands, afraid that Lu Miao would knock it over. "Okay, stop being awkward. You can act coquettishly tomorrow. Let's go to bed tonight!"
"What do you mean you can act coquettishly tomorrow? Good on you, are you copying Geng Xiaoyun's style?"
"Hahaha, no, stop scratching..."
They pushed open the door with laughter, then lowered their voices, blew out the kerosene lamp, laughed quietly, and lay back on their beds.
The wind blew at night, and the trees and bamboos in front of and behind the house rustled, and the windows rattled in the wind.
In a trance, there was the "tick-tick" sound of raindrops falling on the roof tiles.
Lu Miao thought he was dreaming, but when he woke up in the morning, he found that it had indeed rained last night and the temperature had dropped a lot.
Because the weather was hot, the small quilt that she had folded up to use as a pillow was shaken out again when she went to sleep. When she got up, the small quilt was tangled around her waist.
Lu Miao didn't have the habit of getting up early. Usually, Gu Ying and the others would get up first before going to work and call her.
Today was a little unusual. Not only did no one call her to get up, but the living room outside the door also sounded quite noisy, as if no one had gone to work.
After making the bed, Lu Miao combed her hair and took the toiletries out. She curiously asked, "Why didn't you go to work?" Gu Ying and the others smiled and replied,
"Looking like it's going to rain heavily, the captain came over early this morning and said, 'Since it's raining, we'll have a two-day holiday.'"
Lu Miao was surprised, "Two days? So good?"
Geng Xiaoyun sat on the doorstep, knocking off the thick mud on the soles of his shoes, and jokingly said:
"Look at you, little brat, do you think the captain is so kind as to give us a day off? He sees that we can't do our work normally, and it's definitely not going to work when it rains, so he made this arrangement."
"Who cares? It's a holiday anyway."
Lu Miao puffed up his face proudly and ran to the kitchen to get some water for washing.
The rain had stopped in the morning, and the sky was dark with drizzle, and water was dripping from the eaves.
Lu Miao squatted on the steps and brushed her teeth with a wandering look in her eyes. She didn't know if it was an illusion, but she always felt that there was a person standing on the small path that turned from the pond on the right front side of the educated youth site.
Squinting his eyes and taking a closer look through the shadows of the trees, Lu Miao stood up reflexively.
Isn't there a person standing there?
Fu Jingyou, who had disappeared for almost half a month, reappeared without any warning!
