Chapter 17 Going to the City to Sell Matsutake Mushrooms

Before dawn the next day, all the men in the Han family except Han Yu'an set off to dig irrigation ditches.

Liu Meie got up early this time to make breakfast for the three of them, and also brought out lunch along.

The leftover fish pieces from yesterday, along with this morning's cornbread and a few pieces of pickled vegetables, were put into a lunchbox. This was probably the best lunch in Linshui Village.

"You lot, don't be so naive. Take a break when you can, you hear me?"

Han Daping was an honest man who never knew how to cheat or slack off. He always took his work seriously. However, in order to stop Liu Meie from nagging, he obediently nodded.

"Alright, Mom, just let us eat in peace for a while."

Han Bao picked up a mixed flour steamed bun and ate it with cold lotus root slices with gusto; it actually tasted really good.

While eating, Cui Yulu's angry little face from last night suddenly popped into my mind. I must say, this little girl is quite something, especially when she hits people, she's really cute.

"Mother, didn't you once say you would give Cui Yulu to me?"

Han Bao's sudden remark startled the group of people eating.

Liu Meie saw her mother-in-law walking this way and quickly covered his mouth.

"Don't talk nonsense, it's just a joke, don't take it seriously."

"What? That's not what you said. I didn't want to agree to it, and you told me countless times. Now I've thought it through and I agree. Go and talk to Grandma."

Just then, Liu Xiuying lifted the curtain and came in, just in time to hear this: "What do you want to tell me?"

Liu Meie didn't dare to speak, and could only hide behind Han Daping like a quail: "Let me tell you when we can find a marriage partner for Han Bao."

Speaking of which, Han Bao is a year older than Han Yu'an. He is nineteen years old this year, which is also the age for marriage.

The problem is that we don't have any money at home right now, so it might be difficult to find a spouse this year.

"It's time to put that on the agenda. We'll wait for Grandma to ask a matchmaker to see which family's daughter is the best, and then we'll choose that one."

Han Bao knew he couldn't rely on his mother, so he slurped up his thin porridge without looking up and said, "Grandma, there's no need to go to so much trouble. I think Yu Lu is fine, so I'll just make do with her."

Liu Xiuying knew immediately that Liu Meie must have whispered in his ear a lot before, and now she was thinking of her and realized that it was too late to do so.

"You brat, can't even keep your mouth shut with food? Hurry up and eat, then go dig the irrigation ditch."

Liu Xiuying was just short of using a fire poker.

“Grandma, I’m telling the truth. As for Third Brother, he definitely doesn’t understand things between men and women. It’s better to let Yulu be with me. We will definitely treat Yu’an well in the future.”

Liu Xiuying found these words extremely offensive and immediately grabbed a fire poker, ready to hit Han Bao.

"You bastard, you're dreaming! Yu Lu is Yu An's wife, so just give up on that idea."

Han Bao took several blows solidly, but didn't budge.

Instead, he said with a grin, "Grandma, how about you find me a girl just like Yulu?"

Liu Xiuying glared at him, gave a soft snort, and continued eating, ignoring him completely.

When Han Yu'an and Cui Yulu came out together, they happened to run into the three of them going to work.

Good morning, Uncle. Good morning, elder brothers.

Han Daping was a man of few words, but he just nodded strangely, picked up the shovel, and carried it out the door.

Han Bao glanced at her several times. He hadn't noticed how pretty she was before, but now he thought she was quite pretty, especially her almond-shaped eyes, which were clear and bright, and had become more lively compared to her previous lifeless appearance.

It seemed as if her body had grown a lot overnight, no longer as withered as before.

"Second brother, don't look at your wife, go away."

Han Yu'an seemed to notice something was wrong with his eyes and pushed him out directly.

Seeing Han Bao's expression, Han Hu guessed he was missing a girl, so he pulled him out the door together.

"You two have come at the right time. Today you go into town and sell the matsutake mushrooms and those fish. The money you earn is yours."

Liu Xiuying looked at the two of them with a smile. Her grandson's complexion was noticeably better than before. It seemed that he still needed someone to take care of him.

"Mother, that's not right. I did my part, so I should go too. I should at least get a share of the money."

Liu Meie glanced at the two of them and continued eating with her head down. Anyway, she was definitely going to the city this time.

"Grandma, I think it's good to have Auntie with us. Auntie is very knowledgeable and will help us avoid getting lost."

Liu Meie looked up at Cui Yulu. This child was indeed smart and knew how to handle things. She hadn't spoiled her for nothing.

"Alright then, let your aunt take you to town. I have ten coins here for you to use for the oxcart ride."

Liu Meie naturally reached out to take it, but the old lady stuffed the silver into Cui Yulu's hand.

"I feel more at ease with Yulu holding it."

Liu Meie wasn't angry. It was only ten coins anyway, and getting angry about it would only make her seem petty.

"Grandma, Mom, the rabbit... the rabbit has given birth."

Han Chunying came out of the house and went to take a look at the rabbit burrow, wanting to see if Cui Yulu's words were accurate.

To everyone's astonishment, the rabbit actually gave birth, and the number was exactly right—exactly twelve baby rabbits from the two adult rabbits.

Each one is pure white, without a single stray hair, they are absolutely adorable.

"They got chased by dogs first thing in the morning. None of these young ladies are as steady as they used to be. How are they going to find a good husband in the future?"

“Grandma, does a woman have to get married? If he can’t stand what I do, then he’s not the right person for me.”
