After dinner, the family was chatting around the stove when Cui Yulu put two small sweet potatoes into the stove to roast slowly.
"Have you noticed? The weather's been unusual lately, it's been really cold. I bet it'll snow early this year."
Liu Meie chatted while cracking sunflower seeds, occasionally giving a few kernels to Niu Niu.
However, Niu Niu was enjoying the food from Abu and completely ignored the meager treats from his grandmother.
"Yes, Yulu was farsighted. We bought so many cotton-padded clothes, quilts, and charcoal. We shouldn't be freezing this winter."
Qiao Niu said happily, and everyone nodded in agreement.
“Daping, you three should go up the mountain to chop more firewood recently, and deliver some to the families in the village who don’t have able-bodied men. Also, help the elderly repair their houses. Now that our family is doing well, there are many people in the village who are envious. We should do more good deeds.”
Han Daping understood his mother's worries. Now that his family was the only one in the village whose life was getting better and better, it was inevitable that they would be envied. Doing some good deeds would never be a loss.
Cui Yulu was touched. These family members were all thinking of her, so she had to work harder to earn money so that they could live a good life.
Just then, the aroma of stewed chicken wafted from the neighboring yard, which infuriated Liu Meie.
"Just smell the chicken soup, and I'll know they stole it. They stole my fat, egg-laying hen. They're such bastards."
Li Dacui next door had just lifted the lid of the pot when she smelled the delicious aroma of the old hen soup, which almost made her jaw drop.
The Han family is living such a good life now, and Liu Meie scolded them for so long for stealing a chicken from them. It's really infuriating. But the chicken soup was really delicious, so it was worth being scolded.
"Alright, stop yelling. The chicken won't come back no matter how much you yell. You'd better save your energy."
Liu Xiuying peeled a handful of chestnut kernels for Niu Niu and Abu, and when they were cool, she gave one to each of them.
"We have plenty of food now, so how much more can she steal?"
"Mother, that's not how it works. Stealing is illegal. Those hens lay eggs every day, and those eggs are worth money. Besides, why should they eat the chickens I raise? If they want some, why don't they buy some themselves?"
"The more I talk, the more excited you get. I'll beat you up."
Liu Xiuying doesn't want to cause trouble or become the target of public criticism. When people are desperate, they're capable of anything, and who knows, they might even rob you one night.
“From now on, our family should keep a low profile and not flaunt our wealth, you know? If someone with ulterior motives targets us, there will be trouble to come.”
The old lady spoke, and everyone nodded in agreement.
Han Yu'an remained silent. In the past, he would sit close to Cui Yulu, but this time the two of them were a little distance apart, which made Liu Xiuying feel a little sad.
She knew her grandson well; something must have happened to him to cause him to act this way. Yulu, being a carefree girl, probably hadn't noticed.
"Where has Chunying gone? I haven't seen her at dinner."
Cui Yulu asked curiously.
"Oh dear, don't even mention it. This girl is probably out showing off her nice clothes and stuff again. She has no shrewdness at all; won't she be bullied by her mother-in-law in the future?"
"Mother, don't talk nonsense. It's a good thing that Chunying, that girl, can't be bullied. It's a good thing that she doesn't bully others."
As soon as Han Bao finished speaking, Liu Meie grabbed his ear in anger: "You little brat, how can you talk about your sister like that?"
Everyone laughed at the scene; it was such a wonderful family atmosphere.
Just as Cui Yulu had finished digging out the sweet potatoes, the door was suddenly pushed open and a flustered figure rushed in.
As soon as Han Chunying entered the room, she grabbed the kettle and gulped down several mouthfuls of cold water.
"Oh dear, little miss, were you chased by a dog? Why are you running so fast?"
"I don't have time to explain, sister-in-law, come with me quickly, I need you to save my life."
Han Chunying, without being able to explain herself, grabbed Cui Yulu and ran outside.
"Hey, what are you trying to do? Explain yourself before you leave."
Liu Meie blocked the doorway, preventing them from leaving.
"Mother, it's too late. This is a matter of life and death, and it involves the death of both mother and child. We can't delay."
Liu Meie was pushed aside, and Han Chunying dragged Cui Yulu all the way to Du Juan's house.
It turns out that Dujuan's sister-in-law is having a difficult childbirth and is now in critical condition. Both Li Ping, the doctor from the next village, and Han, the midwife from the village, have declared that she cannot be saved.
However, Dujuan's brother didn't believe it and insisted on continuing. Just then, Han Chunying witnessed this scene and thought that since her sister-in-law could save a dying person with just a few needles, Dujuan's sister-in-law could definitely save her as well.
So he hurriedly ran to find Cui Yulu.
"Sister-in-law, you should be able to cure her, right?"
"You've already dragged me out, how can I refuse?"
When the two arrived, Cui Yulu stood at the door and smelled a strong stench of blood, which made her feel unwell.
"Please make way and let my sister-in-law in. She's a very skilled doctor and can definitely save her."
Du Juan had always had a good relationship with her sister-in-law. At this moment, her eyes were swollen from crying, and she quickly grabbed Han Chunying when she saw her return.
"Can your sister-in-law really save my sister-in-law?"
"Of course, my sister-in-law is amazing; she can even bring the dead back to life."
Han Chunying looked at Du Juan with pride. The nice clothes and jewelry she was wearing were all earned by her sister-in-law, so she had confidence in Cui Yulu's medical skills.
“What are you unmarried girls doing standing here? This is not a place for you.”
Granny Han loudly scolded them to stay away.
