With a loud cry of a baby, everyone in the room fell silent.
"She gave birth! My sister-in-law Chunying gave birth."
Two little maids happily brought out hot water, only to hear the baby crying. Dujuan was overjoyed and cried tears of happiness again.
"Look at you, so spineless. I told you my sister-in-law is amazing and would be fine, and now you're contradicting me?"
After Han Chunying finished speaking, her cold, sharp eyes swept over the women who were mocking them, and at that moment, their eyes unconsciously looked elsewhere.
Only Li Dacui, Han Jinling, and Granny Han were so angry they gritted their teeth, and they remembered this debt.
"Hmph, aren't you leaving yet? Are you waiting to eat my ass?"
Granny Han yelled at her daughter-in-law, and Han Jinling and Li Dacui slunk away behind her. The other women also felt embarrassed and left one after another.
Only Tan Guihua stood at the very end, secretly taking out a packet of brown sugar from her bosom and handing it to Du Juan.
"I don't have anything good, but this brown sugar is best for postpartum women. You can take it and give it to Du Heng's family."
“I appreciate your kindness, Sister-in-law Tan, but your family isn’t well-off, and this candy is a rare treat. You should save it for Hu Zi.”
Tan Guihua shook her head in refusal: "You can take it. I can't help you much. Your brother and sister-in-law helped my daughter and me a lot before. This little bit of candy is nothing."
Seeing that Du Juan was adamant, Han Chunying said to her, "Just take what your sister-in-law gave you, otherwise I'll feel bad about it."
Tan Guihua smiled when she saw that she had accepted it.
Tan Guihua and her son lived a hard life, especially in winter when they often ran out of firewood. Whenever Du Heng saw this, he would ask Du Heng to go up the mountain to cut more firewood and send some to the mother and son.
This way, we won't run out of firewood and not be able to get through the winter.
Tan Guihua remembered their kindness and always wanted to repay them, but her family was poor and didn't have anything good. The candy she had was exchanged for eggs laid by pheasants she had picked up from the mountain.
Inside the delivery room, Cui Yulu was covered in sweat from her work, and Liu Xiuying was wiping her sweat with a handkerchief.
"Thank you for your hard work, Yulu girl."
"Grandma, this isn't hard work. It's two lives at least. Saving one life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. I've saved two lives, so this is a great merit."
Li Jinfeng, lying on the delivery bed, looked at the child in her arms and couldn't help but shed tears.
"Thank you so much. If it weren't for you, my child and I probably wouldn't be alive today."
"Look at you, you're perfectly fine, why are you crying? It's very bad for new mothers to cry, it will damage their eyes."
Liu Meie looked at the little baby in her arms and was extremely fond of him. When would her family be able to have another member? This soft and cuddly little thing was just so adorable.
"I won't cry. Is Du Heng coming back? Why doesn't he come to see the child?"
At this moment, Du Juan, Chun Ying, and Tan Guihua came in to see the child and help tidy up the house.
"Sister-in-law, Uncle Ping and the others have already gone to find my brother. They should be back soon, so don't worry."
"Dujuan must be terrified. Come and see your little nephew."
Du Juan nodded, happily sat down on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), and looked at the rosy-cheeked little baby with great delight.
"He's so small, when will he grow up?"
"I guess he'll be able to speak again after you get married."
Liu Meie sat to the side, watching the little guy with immense affection.
"This is mugwort that's burned by the door to remove the smell of blood. Also, don't burn it too hard, or it will choke the children."
Cui Yulu took out a handful of mugwort and gave it to Du Juan, along with some blood-nourishing herbs.
"Your sister-in-law lost a lot of blood during childbirth, so these can help her recover. Also, I'll have Chunying bring you some food tomorrow; it's most important for a new mother to recover."
Du Juan was surprised that Cui Yulu would be so enthusiastic, and quickly looked at Han Chunying.
"Why are you looking at me like that? I told you long ago that my sister-in-law is amazing. Now you know."
Han Chunying looked at Du Juan with a smug expression.
"Okay, I believe you. From now on, I'll call you sister-in-law, okay?"
Du Juan and Chun Ying are the same age, both a year older than Cui Yulu, so calling her "sister-in-law" makes her a little embarrassed.
But she nodded anyway: "Any name is fine, even just rain and dew."
After finishing their chores, the family returned home late at night. Niu Niu and Abu were already asleep, but Cao Qiaoniu was still waiting for them.
"How are you? Are you alright?"
Cao Qiaoniu also experienced a difficult labor and severe bleeding when she gave birth to Niu Niu, which seriously damaged her body. So when she heard that Li Jinfeng also had a difficult labor, she felt a little sympathy for her and couldn't sleep at all.
"Everything is perfectly safe. With rain and dew around, how could anything happen?"
Liu Meie said in a somewhat unpleasant tone, "Is it wrong for her to want a grandson?"
Knowing her mother-in-law's personality, Cao Qiaoniu didn't say anything more.
"Then I'll boil some hot water for you to wash up and rest."
After saying that, he hurriedly went to the kitchen to start a fire and boil water.
“Aunt, you’re being too hasty. My sister-in-law needs to take her time to recover. Once she’s recovered, she’ll definitely be able to have a baby. I’m afraid you won’t like to see her then.”
"Hmph, you're just joking. You haven't had any children all these years, and you can still have more? I guess our family can only look forward to you and Han Bao's future wife."
Cui Yulu blushed and lowered her head, feeling somewhat embarrassed.
"How old are you to still talk nonsense and have no sense of propriety?"
Liu Xiuying raised her shoe sole to hit her again, but she managed to escape.
Han Daping had not been able to find Du Heng and knew that things were likely going badly. Seeing that the torches were about to go out, he quickly retreated.
I was thinking of having the village head arrange for more people to go up the mountain to search tomorrow.
