Chapter 277 A Thief Came to the House

As night fell, An Moxue lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), feeling more relaxed than she had in a long time. Although her house had just been burgled and she didn't know who the thief was, An Moxue thought that she considered this place her home, that she had become dependent on it, and that she felt a sense of belonging here.

She lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), seemingly thinking about many things, yet also seemingly thinking about nothing at all, and fell asleep without her noticing.

In her hazy sleep, An Moxue vaguely heard someone whispering, which jolted her awake. She listened intently—

"Are you sure? Why would that person tell us?"

"Why are you talking so much nonsense? You'll find out once you go in."

"But the front door is locked from the inside, so it's obvious someone lives here. Could the owner have come back?"

"I'm going in. Are you coming in or not? Don't blame me for not warning you. If you back out, you won't get a share of the things in this house."

"I..."

An Moxue was puzzled. They had arrived at her doorstep, and these two were fighting amongst themselves. Where did these thieves come from? It was quite amusing.

Judging from the footsteps, one person went inside, while the other was still outside. The courtyard wall is two and a half meters high, and there are broken pieces of glass on it. These two people must be quite skilled to get into this courtyard.

An Moxue quickly dressed. When the thief entered the house and saw An Moxue sitting on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), staring at him with a half-smile, he stared blankly at her, his hair standing on end, covered in cold sweat, too afraid to move. He didn't even notice the kerosene lamp he was holding falling to the ground. What kind of witch or ghost was this? He had completely forgotten that his companion had said before he came in that there might be someone living in this house. An Moxue had just been staring at him like this; he must have mistaken her for a wandering ghost.

"My lord, please don't worry, I just came in to find something useful, I will not disturb your cultivation, please let me go!" These were the words that came out of the man's mouth after a long time, and he spoke them somewhat haltingly.

Seeing that An Moxue remained motionless and her expression unchanged even after he finished speaking, he continued, "Ghost Immortal, you seem to be a kind and beautiful person, no, a good ghost. Otherwise, you wouldn't be so beautiful. You will definitely let me go, right? Don't worry, I have no intention of harming ghosts, really." As he spoke, he raised his left hand, extending two fingers as if making an oath.

An Moxue made her voice sound ethereal and otherworldly: "Then what are you doing here?"

"I heard from someone that this house is uninhabited, but it has some good stuff, so I thought I'd borrow some to use first."

An Moxue saw that his legs were shaking; he was scared but was still trying to hold on!

"Who is it?" An Moxue asked curiously. In his current state, he was probably telling the truth.

“A stranger passing by said he was visiting relatives in this village, and that's what his relatives told him.” An Moxue wondered if it was possible that the thief who had been here a few days ago had brought two ordinary petty thieves to cover up his presence.

The person outside didn't come in, but they could hear the people inside talking. Because An Moxue deliberately lowered her voice, speaking in a soft and low voice, the person outside didn't hear her voice, only the voice of the man who came in.

He called out softly into the room, somewhat frightened, "Brother Tiger, who are you talking to? Is there anyone else in the room?"

"No? Nobody's around? I'm just talking to myself!"

An Moxue found these two thieves quite amusing today. They weren't very brave, yet they dared to steal. And even as thieves, they weren't completely evil. When they entered the house and saw her, they couldn't even tell if they were human or ghost. How amusing! Let's see when they realize they're human.

"Are you done yet? Can we go now?" It seems the person outside has given up and isn't planning to come in. Is this how thieves behave? They're already at the door and then not going in to steal anything. This thief is a bit unprofessional!

"Wait a moment." After speaking to the person outside, the person inside the house turned to An Moxue and said, "Lord Ghost Immortal, may I take some things with me? Don't worry, I'll take whatever you ask me to take, but I won't take anything you need."

"Oh? What do you want to take?" An Moxue's hair was disheveled, and her whole body was filled with an evil aura when she spoke, so it's no wonder that men mistook her for a female ghost.

"Just take whatever you want, preferably cash. You ghost immortals shouldn't be able to spend money from the mortal world. Don't worry, I'll take the money and have my grandma buy paper money to burn for you when I get back. That way you'll have money to spend, okay?"

"What? Does your grandma concern herself with matters of the underworld?"

"Yes, yes, my grandmother is a famous deity. Don't worry, you will definitely receive the offerings."

An Moxue understood. This person must have been influenced by her grandmother and believed in ghosts, which was why she did this.

“But everything in this house is something I’m used to, and I can’t leave any of it out. What should I do?” An Moxue said with some distress.

"Huh?" The man clearly didn't expect Mo Xue to answer like that.

The man outside waited for a while but the man inside still hadn't come out. He grew impatient and asked, "Brother Tiger, are you done yet?"

"Wait, wait a minute," the man inside replied. He was clearly scared, but he hadn't taken anything and was still somewhat unwilling to give up.

"Um, Immortal Ghost, is there anything you don't like that you could lend me for a moment?" the man asked cautiously, looking at An Moxue.

"No, kneel down." An Moxue shouted, and the man knelt down with a thud.

The noise inside alerted those outside. "Brother Tiger, what's wrong?"

"Get in here, you outside!" An Moxue shouted again.

After that shout, there was silence outside, but no one ran away.

"If you don't want this person in the house to die, get in here right now!" An Moxue shouted again.

Then, the sound of the door opening and someone entering the house was heard.

As soon as the man entered the door, he saw the man kneeling on the ground. He quickly went over to help the man inside, named Hu Zi, but did not help him up.

"Brother Tiger, what's going on?" Tiger was still in a daze and didn't understand what was happening.

An Moxue turned on her flashlight and shone it on the two people, asking, "What, you came to steal from this house but don't know anything about it?"

"You, you, aren't a ghost?" Tiger asked tremblingly.

An Moxue laughed again, but the laugh was terrifying no matter how you looked at it. She asked, "When did I say I was a ghost?! Huh?"

"But..." Tiger suddenly realized that he had been scaring himself and had mistaken her for a ghost.

The man who came in later was more sober and asked, "Heroine, please spare us! We didn't steal anything. This is the first and last time. I promise we'll never steal again."

"That's your problem. You didn't succeed because I was there and didn't give you the chance, not because you failed." Mo Xue wanted to laugh too; this was the first time these two had ever been thieves.
