Chapter 56 Continue the Search in the Forest

An Moxue had no idea how Wu Sicheng found the location of the cave in the dark. He was holding her hand, and she was holding a flashlight. As they walked, Wu Sicheng also picked up some dry branches and leaves. After many twists and turns, they arrived at a small ravine.

The ravine wasn't large, but it was deep. Wu Sicheng took the flashlight and shone it around, but didn't find any dangerous creatures. He found the most sheltered and steep spot, let go of An Moxue's hand, handed her the flashlight, took out his shovel, and started digging.

As he dug, he explained, "When choosing a burrow for the night, Mo Xue must choose a place far away from large and dangerous animals, a place that is sheltered from wind, rain, and snow. Before digging, you must check if there are any potential dangers nearby. The burrow doesn't need to be too big; just big enough for a person to sit in without hitting their head. Once it's dug, find some dry grass to spread on the ground. Then, clear a partition in front of the burrow to place firewood for burning. Burning firewood can not only keep you warm but also drive away animals. But the partition must be well done; if it catches fire, it will be terrible. When you leave the next day, you must put out the fire and cover it with soil to prevent the embers from reigniting."

"Okay, I got it. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?" An Moxue thought to herself. She wouldn't need to know this herself, but there's quite a bit to it.

"It's best not to dig holes in the ground on rainy days, as they are prone to collapse. Winter is the most suitable time. These two little ones are quite interesting; they are both lying quietly to the side."

"It's alright. At home, it barks whenever someone comes in, especially at night. It keeps barking and won't stop until it wakes you up. Why does it feel a bit colder here in the mountains than at home?"

"It is indeed a bit low, there must be a temperature difference of two or three degrees."

Do you have any plans for tomorrow?

"If we can't find those two fugitives, we'll look for our other companions and other fugitives. But we'll set off at dawn tomorrow morning. I wonder how our injured companion is doing?"

"Don't worry, everything will be fine."

"I hope so."

The two chatted and time passed by unnoticed, and Wu Sicheng's burial pit was finished.

An Moxue placed the leaves at the bottom and the dry firewood on top, and lit the campfire.

Wu Sicheng then found some dry grass in the ravine, placed it next to the fire to dry off the moisture, and then spread it on the ground of the cave.

An Moxue and Wu Sicheng were baking steamed buns in the cave, with the two little ones squatting on either side.

An Moxue handed the baked buns to Wu Sicheng. When she turned her head, the firelight illuminated his pale face, making him look like a delicate and beautiful woman. An Moxue took his hand and checked his pulse. It was weak, but his hand was very cold, which was caused by excessive blood loss.

Wu Sicheng took the steamed bun, looked at An Moxue and smiled: "Moxue, it's okay, you'll be fine after a night's rest."

"Okay, take one of the pills I gave you. Keep taking them until you finish the whole bottle. Both of your injuries resulted in excessive blood loss. If you don't take good care of yourself, you're likely to develop fatigue as a sequela, which is extremely dangerous for this profession. You have to take it seriously. You've been going on missions far too frequently. You haven't even fully recovered before you're going on another mission. Can your body handle it? If you keep doing this, many parts of your body will develop hidden injuries. It's okay when you're young, but they'll all come back to haunt you as you get older. You'll suffer more when you're old."

While getting the medicine, Wu Sicheng replied, "Yes, I will eat it properly."

The two of them quietly ate their steamed buns and drank malted milk powder. Occasionally, they would toss a piece of steamed bun to the two little ones.

From the age of fifteen when he entered military school to the age of nineteen when he officially joined the army after graduating from university, Wu Sicheng has been away from home for seven years, from the age of twenty-two to the age of twenty-two. He has been busy with various missions for many years. Such peaceful and warm moments are very rare. Even though the two of them are not speaking now, he feels that they are precious.

The night passed peacefully. An Moxue was the first to wake up. She was not quite used to this kind of wilderness survival. In the past, she always went camping in a tent.

She gently got up, moved some distance from the cave, and found a spot to practice her boxing.

She was fighting with great force, completely unaware that Wu Sicheng had already woken up and was quietly watching her with his arms crossed, surprised and delighted that she was such a good fighter.

An Moxue withdrew her fist after striking, turned around and saw Wu Sicheng standing quietly. The two smiled at each other.

Wu Sicheng spoke first: "Mo Xue, your punches are really good."

"It's alright, it's a family tradition, I'm used to it." An Moxue walked towards him.

"Come on, let me check your pulse." An Moxue walked up to him and took his hand. "It's much better than yesterday. Keep taking your medicine, don't stop."

"I've taken care of the fire. Let's leave now and deal with our hunger when we encounter prey, okay?"

"Alright, little wolf, little wolf, let's go, follow me."

On the second day after the two men and two wolves set off into the forest to search for their tracks, Wu Sicheng would whistle a few times and imitate bird calls every now and then to make a mark.

Around 8 o'clock, the two little ones brought back two pheasants, one after the other, and placed them in front of An Moxue. Then they circled around her, meaning one thing—they were hungry and wanted to eat.

An Moxue had no choice but to stop Wu Sicheng and tell him to kill the chicken and pluck its feathers while she went to gather firewood and start a fire.

The two little ones ran around the two people. An Moxue had started a fire, and Wu Sicheng had finished processing the pheasant.

An Moxue handed the seasoning packet to Wu Sicheng and said, "You roast the chicken. I found a wild grapevine over there with lots of grapes. I'll go pick some."

Wu Sicheng looked in the direction she was pointing and found a small slope where grapes were growing.

"You can pick more; grapes that have been touched by frost and snow taste the best right now. I'll call you when they're done roasting."

“Okay.” An Moxue answered him readily and turned to walk towards the slope.

This is an old tree that has been growing for many years. An Moxue picked a grape and put it in her mouth. The grape was exceptionally sweet and sour, and it made her mouth water.

Especially since it was the best time to pick the fruit, An Moxue turned her back to Wu Sicheng, took out her gardening shears, and started cutting. In no time, she had cut the tree clean and filled her backpack to the brim. She put the rest into her spatial storage.

There was a patch of Solomon's Seal under the grapevines, with thick roots and stems. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to put them, so An Moxue had to use a military shovel to dig up some of the larger ones to roast and eat later.

She placed a large bunch of Solomon's Seal in front of Wu Sicheng and asked him, "Look, do you recognize it?" Wu Sicheng shook his head.

An Moxue continued, "This is Solomon's Seal. It can quench thirst, relieve coughs, and moisten the lungs. It's also good for the spleen, stomach, and heart. Most importantly, it can be eaten raw or roasted over a fire. It's sweet and delicious. The main thing is that it can be eaten in three seasons of the year. The only problem is that it's hard to find in winter when the mountains are blocked by heavy snow. And it grows in patches. It's very common in the forests and slopes of the northern lands. It has green leaves and white flowers. You can eat it to quench your thirst and relieve your hunger when you're on a mission."

He handed the whole plant to Wu Sicheng, who took it and examined it carefully. He even peeled off the skin and put it in his mouth to eat. He tried chewing it and found it to be sweet.

An Moxue looked at him and asked, "Can you accept this taste?"

"It's quite delicious, with a subtle sweetness."

"People with weak spleen and stomach should not eat it, but others can eat it without any problem."

Wu Sicheng twirled the roast chicken in his hand and asked An Moxue, "Moxue, you seem to know a lot about medicine?"

An Moxue removed all the stems from the Solomon's Seal, buried the roots in the fire, and after finishing, said to Wu Sicheng, "I'm just interested. I prefer making medicine."
