Chapter 5 Before Moving

At 7 a.m. on the 24th, An Moxue got up, washed up, made herself a cup of malted milk powder, and took two steamed buns, two eggs, and an anti-inflammatory pill from her space.

Just as I finished eating, there was a knock on the door. I got up and opened it. "Uncle Zhang, wait a moment, I'll go get my bag and come right out."

He went into the bedroom, took out his military green bag, put his household registration book, wallet, and two sets of keys inside, took out a lock, locked the door, and left with Uncle Zhang.

On the way, An Moxue told Uncle Zhang about the move, saying that she wouldn't bother organizing a rental house, as her family had a house in Huaihua Hutong and she would be moving there.

Uncle Zhang also talked to Mo Xue about the matter of the pension. Since An Mo Xue's parents died at the same time and she was still a minor, the government would pay her child support until she turned eighteen, and it would be double, one payment being eighteen dollars and fifty cents plus some receipts.

Both her parents were members of the Communist Youth League, and her father had a National Military Commission honorary title, which added 35% to his pension; three first-class merits, which added 25% to his pension; five second-class merits, which added 20% to his pension; and five third-class merits, which added 15% to his pension, plus ten months' salary.

The mother received a second-class merit award plus a 20% pension, and two third-class merit awards plus a 15% pension.

Because this mission was of great importance and her parents made significant contributions, each of them received an additional 500 yuan in compensation.

Upon arriving at the location, An Moxue presented her household registration booklet to process the receipt of the pension, the martyr's child certificate, and the martyr's child support certificate.

The grain and oil supply was transferred to Huaihua Hutong.

After the procedures were completed, An Moxue received her father's pension (salary + years of service + meritorious service allowance) of 3,785.96 yuan and her mother's pension of 2,732.85 yuan, for a total of 6,518.31 yuan.

Uncle Zhang told An Moxue that this was issued by the military, and that she needed to go to her registered residence location. There was also a document from the local government stating that each person would receive three months' salary, and that was all.

After leaving the Political Department, Uncle Zhang drove An Moxue to the Beijing Municipal Government to file relevant information and receive a pension of 762 yuan, which was equivalent to six months' salary for her parents.

Then they took her to the Huaihua Hutong Neighborhood Committee to finalize the grain and oil rations, the support for the martyr's child, and to collect all future ration coupons and support payments there, from the 1st to the 3rd of each month, without having to go to the military district.

I received a total of 7,280 yuan and 31 cents that day. My household registration book now lists me as one person, and my grain ration book also lists me as one person.

After finishing all the schoolwork and with her backpack bulging, Uncle Zhang took An Moxue to a nearby bank to open an account and deposit seven thousand yuan.

After finishing, he drove An Moxue to her home in Huaihua Hutong.

On the way there, worried that the child was too young to handle things properly, I told her that if anyone asked, she should say six months' salary to someone she knew, and three hundred yuan to someone she didn't know.

Remember this: understate the amount, don't overstate it. If you can get away with it, do so. Try not to mention specific amounts. Some people can support a whole family on just a few dollars.

An Moxue obediently nodded in agreement, thinking to herself, "Am I stupid? I'll just answer whatever they ask."

Soon we arrived at Huaihua Hutong. This hutong used to be inhabited by wealthy and noble people, so the road was wide and cars could drive right up to the door.

After getting out of the car and opening the door, An Moxue and her parents used to come over every now and then to clean the house and ventilate it, so it was a place you could move in with just your bags.

Now, moving only requires a simple cleaning.

Uncle Zhang inspected the items one by one, and finding nothing that needed repair, he was relieved. He locked the door and drove An Moxue back to the military compound.

After arriving home, I asked An Moxue when she was moving. An Moxue said she would move after graduating from school and receiving her diploma, which would be at the end of the month. She said that if she moved now, it would be too far to go to school.

This past week, An Moxue tidied up the house thoroughly, putting everything that could be put away into storage space, leaving none of the well-known items outside untouched. She ate meals, took her medicine on time, and went to school regularly, and her health improved significantly. At the very least, she no longer looked haggard and dejected; she was much more energetic.

A week has passed in the blink of an eye, and today is the day An Moxue receives her graduation certificate.

The classroom was noisy. An Moxue's deskmate, a talkative girl, said, "Moxue, have you found a job yet? Those who don't have jobs after graduation have to go to the countryside. I heard that only two people in our class have secured jobs. Otherwise, you have to find someone and get married quickly. I don't have anyone. What am I going to do? Sigh..."

The silence lasted no more than five seconds before her deskmate's voice came again, "Mo Xue, you're an only child, so you don't have to go to the countryside. Why should I have brothers and sisters..." Mo Xue had been fed up with this deskmate for the past week. You didn't even need to reply; she could just keep talking on and on without repeating herself or pausing for ages.

After receiving my graduation certificate and leaving the classroom, I was stopped by a boy.

"Mo Xue, I heard you have to move out of the military compound at the end of this month. Do you have a place to live? I don't mind that your parents are dead and you live alone. If you agree to date me, I'll let you live at my house. You can share a room with my three younger sisters. The room has bunk beds, so let my sisters make do for now. After we get married, you can live with me. But it's agreed that your things have to be moved to my house. My parents make the decisions, and your parents' pensions have to be given to me as dowry. I'll keep them. I'm a man, and I have to be in charge."

The boy was 1.7 meters tall with a hooked nose. He said he didn't mind, but his eyes were full of condescension.

"Wang Fugui, get out of my way, don't delay my journey home. Someone like you should go home, wash up, and go to sleep; you'll be dreaming sooner. Get out!"

I casually shoved him aside and walked out.

Wang Fugui probably didn't expect An Moxue to treat him like this, and she easily pushed him aside.

Standing there stunned, he didn't react until An Moxue had taken seven or eight steps. He quickly jogged after her.

“An Moxue, how can you talk like that? I’m only doing this for your own good. I’m afraid you’ll feel inferior. You’re just an orphan girl, it’s good enough that someone wants you. You should be grateful, you know? Forget it, I’m magnanimous and won’t hold it against you. Let’s discuss how to help you move tomorrow.”

This bastard ruined my good mood for the day.

She's not pretty, but she has pretty dreams.

Don't you even know if you're worthy? You can't understand human language.

He went up and kicked him over, then kicked him twice more, before running away before he could react.

I jogged all the way into the family compound before slowing down.

The original owner of this body was always quiet and well-behaved at school; Wang Fugui never expected her to treat him like this. Who could have imagined! Her very being had been replaced.

The original owner's mother's worries in the letter were not unfounded. A teenage girl with a huge family fortune—if anyone knew that the money alone amounted to more than 30,000, they couldn't even imagine what the consequences would be.

Especially those who eat the offspring of the destitute.

Seeing only a glimpse of the whole picture, it seems I need to seriously consider my future path.

I'm like a shiny piece of fat meat that everyone's eyeing.
