The pheasant was still roasting. Mo Xue put her backpack between the two of them and said to Wu Sicheng, "These grapes are both sour and sweet. You can try them. Give me the chicken, and I'll roast it."
Wu Sicheng smiled faintly: "No need, it'll be ready soon. Just wait to eat. Mo Xue, do you not like chicken skin?"
"Why do you ask that?" An Moxue asked him curiously.
"It was the first time you saved me from my injury. I saw it, and the whole chicken didn't have any skin. I was too embarrassed to ask at the time."
"Oh, that's because it was my first time killing a live chicken and plucking its feathers. I asked my aunt how to do it, but when I got home, I still messed up the scalding process. In some places, the skin came off, and in others, the feathers wouldn't come off. In the end, I didn't even have any skin left. I think this is a bit difficult. Practice and theory are not the same thing," An Moxue said regretfully, without showing any embarrassment.
Wu Sicheng found her very interesting, completely different from other girls. If it were other girls, they would have been too shy to say anything, or they would have simply come up with a different excuse.
"It is indeed difficult. I only became so proficient after practicing a lot."
"Yeah, I think so too. I've never done this before. I'm quite satisfied with the first time I've done it like that."
Wu Sicheng was amused by An Moxue this time. How could this girl be so funny! He chuckled softly, "Moxue, I'm so lucky to have eaten the first chicken you've ever killed."
"Of course, you should cherish it."
"Yes, that's right."
Wu Sicheng's chicken was roasted, and the Solomon's Seal buried in the fire was also ready. The aroma was so enticing that the two little ones, who had just returned from a run, started howling. An Moxue, holding a roasted chicken, wouldn't give any to them, making the two little ones anxious and circling around her.
After teasing the wolves for a couple of rounds and letting them roam freely, An Moxue divided the roasted chicken between them. Holding the chicken leg, she thought to herself, "If this were in my original world, I'd be sentenced to five or six years in prison. This is a Class II protected wild animal in China."
After eating and drinking their fill, the two humans and two wolves continued their search in the forest. Not long after they left, they discovered the marks left by their companions. From then on, they had to be much more careful on their journey.
Wu Sicheng followed his companion's marks and kept searching until around 2 p.m., when the two of them heard the howling of two little ones not far away.
The two followed the sound of the two little ones' howls until they got closer and saw that they had found an injured person in the crevice between two big trees. This person was none other than Zhao Gang, Wu Sicheng's companion.
Zhao Gang saw the two wolf cubs and was ready to fight back, but he didn't see them attack him. He only saw them standing not far away, full of defensiveness, howling incessantly.
He remained vigilant, thinking the wolf cubs were calling for more wolves to attack at any moment.
Instead of more wolves, they received an unexpected surprise – Wu Sicheng and a girl.
The two little ones stopped howling when they saw An Moxue coming over. An Moxue praised them, saying, "Well done! Go play, but don't go too far." Hearing her say that, the two little ones let out a howl, as if to say "That's right," and then turned and ran away.
Upon seeing Zhao Gang, Wu Sicheng quickly went up to him, asking, "Zhao Gang, how are you?"
While checking his injuries, they found that he had been stabbed in the left leg and shot in the right arm, which was already somewhat inflamed. Fortunately, the bullet only damaged the skin and flesh and did not remain inside or damage the bone. He was so weak due to the long run, exhaustion, and injuries, but he was not seriously injured.
Zhao Gang's voice was weak as he softly said, "Company Commander, there are no serious injuries, just a leg and an arm."
"That's good." He turned to look at An Moxue. "Moxue, the medicine for your injuries."
An Moxue took off her backpack and took out disinfectant, gauze, and wound medicine. She then said to Wu Sicheng, "Do you see if he has a fever? I also took some fever reducer."
Wu Sicheng reached out and touched Zhao Gang's forehead, replying, "He has a bit of a fever. Get him some fever reducer."
An Moxue took out another dose of fever reducer from her schoolbag and handed it to Wu Sicheng. Wu Sicheng took the fever reducer, picked up a water bottle, and held it to his lips. He swallowed the medicine from the water bottle. The wheat flavor made him unconsciously swallow more. He gulped it down in a few mouthfuls and felt refreshed.
Seeing him like this, An Moxue took out two White Rabbit milk candies from her pocket and handed them to Wu Sicheng: "Here, give them to him. You have one too." She then took one out and put it in her mouth.
Wu Sicheng took the milk candy and put it in his mouth along with Zhao Gang, and began to treat his wound.
Zhao Gang had just drunk malted milk powder, and now he had milk candy. It was like a person walking in the desert finding food and water, and a feast at that.
With nothing else to do, An Moxue found a dead tree stump to sit on and leisurely ate a bunch of grapes.
After Wu Sicheng finished treating Zhao Gang's wounds, he said to An Moxue, "Moxue, are you hungry? I'll go find some food. You rest here and keep an eye on Zhao Gang for me."
Turning back to Zhao Gang, she said, "This is my friend, An Moxue. You can just call her Comrade An." Then she turned and left.
Zhao Gang said weakly but politely to An Moxue, "Comrade An, hello. Thank you for the medicine and food."
Mo Xue replied, "You're welcome, Comrade Zhao Gang. Get some rest."
Neither of them spoke. Zhao Gang closed his eyes to rest, while An Moxue ate grapes.
An Moxue discovered many good things along the way, but she was in a hurry to find someone and didn't have time to pick them. She missed them all. Now that this matter is over, she will stay on this mountain for a while.
When Wu Sicheng returned, he was carrying a silly roe deer, and the two little ones came back with him, circling around him and refusing to leave.
An Moxue had already gathered the firewood and tidied up the area. Seeing Wu Sicheng carrying a roe deer back, she quickly went to take it from him and asked, "Did you hurt your wound?"
Wu Sicheng smiled faintly and replied, "No, don't worry."
An Moxue lit the fire and set up the firewood, while Wu Sicheng tidied up the roe deer. Perhaps because he had spent a long time in the mountains, his movements were fluid and incredibly fast.
An Moxue buried her head and hooves in the fire to save for the two little ones to eat later. Wu Sicheng cut off some raw meat and threw it to them, and they happily ate it.
An Moxue tried to stop him, but Wu Sicheng said to her, "Moxue, they are wolves and must eat raw meat. They are already big enough. You can train them to hunt on their own. Eating cooked food all the time will diminish their wolfish nature and make them less aggressive. The hunting dogs in the army eat raw meat. Look how well they are eating."
An Moxue replied, "I've never raised animals before, so I don't know. I'm just raising them by feel. Is there anything else I should be careful about?"
Wu Sicheng tossed a piece of scrap material to the two little ones and then replied, "Don't let them out of the yard. No matter how well you raise them, they're still just you. They can still be aggressive towards other people. When they get older, you'll have to be careful too!"
Then the two of them, one cutting the meat and the other skewering it, finished in no time, and the fire was blazing, just right for grilling the meat.
