Chapter 106 Sparring

Wu Sicheng was worried about An Moxue, so he arrived at An Moxue's house early the next morning.

But by six o'clock no one had gotten up, and there was no smoke coming out of the chimney, even though he had arrived at five o'clock.

I was really worried, so I jumped over the gate and went into the yard. The gate was locked from the inside.

He reached the eaves, but the door was locked from the inside. He went to the bedroom window, knocked, and softly called out, "Mo Xue! Mo Xue!"

He was about to break down the door when a lazy reply came from inside: "Wait a minute."

After a while, the sound of footsteps followed by the sound of the door opening came. Wu Sicheng saw that An Moxue was sleepy-eyed and had a rosy complexion when she opened the door, and he was relieved.

An Moxue opened the door and asked Wu Sicheng, "Why are you here so early? Is something the matter?"

An Moxue returned to the kitchen to light the fire. Wu Sicheng was standing at the door and replied, "No, I noticed you weren't doing well when I left yesterday, so I was a little worried and came to check on you. I waited outside for a while, but I didn't see any smoke coming from the chimney, and I didn't see you get up, so I jumped in."

"Thank you, I feel much better after a good night's sleep. It's probably because I didn't sleep well the night before and was hungry all day."

Seeing that she was unwilling to talk more, Wu Sicheng didn't ask any further questions, but asked, "Mo Xue, is there anything you need today?"

"No. How about we have a spar after dinner?"

"Sure, shall we go to the mountains?"

"Can."

"Boil some water."

An Moxue looked at him with a puzzled expression.

“I brought a pheasant over; I haven’t had breakfast yet.”

Although he was stating a fact, he sounded pitiful. An Moxue thought she might be overthinking it.

"How would you like it? With rice or flatbread?"

Before Wu Sicheng could speak, she said—

"It's better with rice."

Wu Sicheng was secretly delighted. "Are you asking me this?"

Or should I ask myself?

Luckily he was a little slow; otherwise, he would have thought she was asking him a question!

He went to the gate, picked up the pheasant, and went into the kitchen.

An Moxue asked Wu Sicheng, "Was this chicken caught this morning, or was it caught in a trap?"

"I saw it when I came over this morning and just grabbed it without thinking."

"Why have I never seen it casually, let alone caught it? It's true that different people have different fates."

"This is the first time I've caught this. You're the one who's more lucky with words. Maybe this was delivered to you through my hands."

Hearing him say that, An Moxue was very pleased and asked in return, "Really? There's such a saying. Don't say it again, or if someone hears you, you'll be seen as a soldier leading the way in feudal superstition!" If you ignored the upturned corners of her mouth, it would be even more convincing.

Once the water boiled, Wu Sicheng deftly plucked the chicken's feathers, gutted it, and cut it open.

An Moxue sighed inwardly, wondering why she couldn't do this chicken-plucking job.

If only I had a helper like Wu Sicheng in my life, he would be a perfect match for everyone, from formal occasions to domestic duties, and he's a true all-rounder. He's an essential for both home and travel.

Unfortunately, it's just a thought. If Wu Sicheng knew what she was thinking, he wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Breakfast was prepared and eaten by the two of them working together.

Looking at the energetic An Moxue now, Wu Sicheng wondered if he had imagined it yesterday, and silently put away his worries.

After finishing their meal, the two decided to stay on the mountain for a day, discussing and exchanging ideas. When they left, they even took a small pot and some seasonings with them.

On the way up the mountain, Wu Sicheng asked An Moxue, "Moxue, where did you put the two little ones? Why don't we go find them?"

"Let's not look for them. Let's take these few days to see if they can adapt to living in the mountains."

Seeing that she said that, Wu Sicheng didn't say anything more.

The two of them hadn't gone far when they found a flat, open area and stopped.

After a short rest, everyone practiced their own exercises to stretch their muscles and bones.

Afterwards, An Moxue also voiced her doubts: "Wu Sicheng, I felt a long time ago that I was about to break through, but I'm still stuck in a bottleneck and haven't made any progress. Do you have any suggestions?"

Wu Sicheng thought for a moment and said, "I think you might be a little impatient. There's a saying, 'When the water flows, the channel is formed,' or maybe you're just missing a trigger. Don't think about advancing yet; just focus on practicing and see if things get better."

An Moxue thought about it for a while, but couldn't come up with a good solution. She could only leave it at that for now. Was she really being too impatient?

"And you, how's your learning from Uncle Li going?"

Wu Sicheng didn't answer her question, but said, "Come on, let's have a little competition, then you'll know."

An Moxue replied with a single word: "Okay."

The two got into position, and An Moxue made the first move, saying, "I'm going to make my move, so don't try to fool me with fake moves."

As they spoke, the two began to fight. The sounds of fists and feet striking each other could be heard. As they exchanged blows, Wu Sicheng also gave up his initial intention to give in to her.

The two became increasingly excited as they fought, feeling like they had met their match and were evenly matched. The battle was exceptionally intense; an outsider might have thought they were enemies. Neither would give an inch, and in the back-and-forth exchanges, they both felt they had improved and learned a great deal.

Wu Sicheng was experienced in actual combat, while An Moxue was more adept at circulating her internal energy. The two complemented each other's strengths and weaknesses, and their fight was fierce and evenly matched.

When they both stopped, they were drenched in sweat.

Since arriving in this world, An Moxue initially learned martial arts on her own. Later, with the guidance of Grandpa Li Guangshou, her progress was even faster. However, the old man only pointed out the moves and stopped there.

This was the first time she had ever sparred with someone without holding back—it was exhilarating!

An Moxue sighed and said, "There are still people who know more about the training. In the past, I practiced alone. When I hit a bottleneck, I could only go into the mountains to fight wild boars or wolves. It was a completely different experience."

"Is this how you learned your kung fu? You must have spent a lot of time in the mountains. Weren't you scared?" Wu Sicheng asked, looking at her curiously.

"At first I was a little scared, so I would look for lone wild boars or wolves. If I saw a pack of wolves, I would run around them. Later I chased after herds of wild boars. In the end, I could even fight a few wolves. It was quite fun."

“If you keep going like this, you'll definitely end up deep in the mountains. The village chief has no objection.”

“Once I was out for a while and was about to go back when I discovered tomb raiders. I followed them for another week. When I got back, the village chief didn’t look too happy. When he heard that I had discovered tomb raiders, he didn’t say anything more. He just told me not to go into the mountains for so long in the future.”

"This village chief is a really good person."

"The village officials are all alright, and the villagers are mostly honest and simple. Which village doesn't have a few troublemakers?"

"You're quite lucky; you've been assigned to a relatively good place."

"I think so too. We've rested enough, let's go hunting. I want roast chicken and roast rabbit, I wonder if we can catch any?"

"Yes, definitely! Come with me, and I guarantee you'll get to eat roast chicken and roast rabbit."
