I wondered to myself, how did they manage to impersonate people so convincingly without leaving a single trace?
Just as I was about to go back to my old room, I felt someone fly into Heqing Palace.
"Wan'er".
I saw Wan'er coming over and waved to her.
"My lord, what's wrong?"
Has anyone entered the hall today?
"No."
Wan'er shook her head, wondering if she had just imagined it. I told her to go ahead and do her work, then pushed open the door and went inside. Before I could even close the door, a girl's hand landed on my waist.
"Let go."
Even if I were a girl, I wouldn't like to be so close to girls.
"My lord, you've been home for two months straight, leaving me no chance to get close to you." It was Cailu. I had forgotten; she's now a lady-in-waiting in the palace.
"Let me go." What kind of hand is this? It's wrapped so tightly that I can't break free no matter how hard I try.
"No, you smell so unique, let me smell you."
Seeing that she was about to raise her hand, I quickly stepped on her foot and dodged away.
“Princess, isn’t your Chequ Kingdom a bit too open? You can leave now, and I’ll pretend nothing happened today.”
Cailu approached with a wicked grin, and I quickly hid to the side. Was she really stupid? Even if she didn't know I was a woman, she knew this was Heqing Palace. How dare she do such a thing?
"You've become even more handsome in just over a year. Let me see."
I drew my Phantom Sword from the side, pointing the blade at her: "This is the imperial palace, in Zhao Le's palace. Princess, you should restrain yourself a bit."
Cailu took a step forward, her throat pressed against the sword's edge: "It's alright, I'm lucky to be alive."
I really regret not going closer to the door, otherwise I could have run away.
Was it you who just came in?
"Yeah, hehe, isn't it very light? Nobody noticed."
"You're being too presumptuous. Speak up, what do you want from me? Once you're done, get out of here."
This person is too alluring; just looking at them makes me want to run away.
"They had to hide from several people to get here, and the prince consort doesn't even care."
"I don't care. If you're here to see me, just leave as soon as you see me."
Cailu looked aggrieved: "Then put down your sword first, and we can talk slowly."
What are you talking about? I'd have to be an idiot to put the sword down.
Seeing that I neither moved nor sheathed my sword, she sighed, "Alas, I originally had something very important to tell you, and now it seems that I absolutely must tell you."
I sheathed my sword and looked at her warily: "I don't want to hear it. If you don't want people to say you're bullying Princess Chequ, you'd better leave quickly."
“This matter is closely related to you; you’ll regret it if you don’t listen.”
Cailu was like a soft-bodied animal; I don't know how she got close. I quickly sat down next to her, keeping my distance, and kept glancing at the door, trying to escape if I could.
"Prince Consort~" She reached out and placed her hand on the back of my hand. I quickly pulled away, but she wasn't annoyed. She continued, "This is about Brother Xie. If you knew, you would be heartbroken."
Xie Yuancheng, could something have happened to him?
“Look at you, you’ve completely changed as soon as you heard about him.” Cailu didn’t continue, but I urged her from the side before she finally spoke: “Brother Xie is going to marry my sister. Last year at the Ji residence, I went to see you and knew that you two had a close relationship. When I heard this news, I was even happier than when I first met you, and I rushed over to share it with you.”
That bastard! He was going out every day dressed to the nines for a while, just to meet up with his sister. I remember the maids in the manor were saying for a while that a beautiful woman had come from the capital, and maybe it was his sister.
"You're talking nonsense."
Seeing that she was about to walk away, I quickly told her to turn back.
“My lord, men all have three wives and four concubines. Look at Brother Xie, he’s already married and has children, but he still gets married every now and then.” She followed me and said, “Just forget about him. If you don’t like the palace, I can take you back to Chequ and find a corpse that looks like you. Your emperor won’t care about that.”
She's getting increasingly absurd. I wonder if there are any spies around. Even if she's the princess of Chequ Kingdom, she's abroad. And if Li Zhaole could be schemed against, what chance does she have?
“Cailu, there’s something behind you.”
While she was looking back, I quickly opened the door and left. Regardless of whether the matter was true or false, it was better to at least get away.
"My lord, what's wrong?"
When I saw Wan'er coming, I quickly pulled her and ran towards the courtyard.
Just as I reached the courtyard gate, Cai Lu flew down.
“Princess Cailu, this is Heqing Palace, you can’t do anything reckless here.”
"It's alright, then I'll just take you to my residence to talk."
She stretched out her hand, and I pushed Wan'er aside to dodge Cailu's attack.
The guards are outside; why don't they come in for a moment?
I had just hidden behind a pillar when she grabbed my hand. I thought I was done for, but then Cailu was struck and fell into the courtyard.
"Princess Chequ, you are now a lady-in-waiting, how can you come to my Heqing Palace?" Fortunately, Li Zhaole came. She was truly a hidden talent, able to hit Cailu even while pregnant.
"My lord, look, the princess is pregnant. I really have a lot to tell you. Why don't you come back with me?"
Li Zhaole threw the object onto the gong on the pavilion, and soon the guards outside came in.
"Greetings to the princess and the prince consort."
“Send the Lady of Dew Collection back.”
Wan'er and I stood next to Li Zhaole, and we instantly felt that she had an exceptionally good princess temperament. Just as Cailu was about to resist, the guards raised their spears and swords.
"Don't be so smug, I'll be back. It's always good to catch up." Cailu winked at me as she left, "Prince Consort, remember what I told you."
They're finally gone, and I feel a huge sense of relief.
I had Wan'er help Li Zhaole inside. She's become so much gentler now, and she doesn't even glare at Wan'er anymore. Not long ago, Wan'er was telling me that Li Zhaole had changed, and she wasn't used to it.
"Why did she come to see you?"
"Let's catch up."
I can't very well reveal that she said Xie Yuancheng and her sister got married. This is just Cai Lu's side of the story. Even if I'm unhappy about it, I won't cause trouble for Xie Yuancheng.
"That's really too much. If it weren't for the fact that she helped me before, I would have crippled her long ago."
"Princess Cailu helped you before?" When did that happen? How could the two of them still have any connection?
"It was when you went to the Northwest. The Crown Prince was going to take me to Linyang. The night before, I don't know what I ate, but I felt unwell all over. I fainted in front of her, and she saved me."
The palace was heavily guarded, and the most favored princess of the dynasty ate something bad, yet there was no one around to look after her.
"We really have to thank her."
I kept my doubts to myself and will investigate them later.
