I nodded through gritted teeth. He said they should have arrived yesterday, but those barbarians were missing one ingredient when they came to the capital.
"It hurts!" I cried out as he massaged the area where the medicine was applied; it felt like it was on fire.
"Ying'er~" Xie Yuancheng started to shed tears: "It's all my fault that you've suffered. You can't jump around like that anymore. You've already had three children, and your body is already in pain."
He seemed to be in more pain than I was. I leaned into his arms and shook my head: "If I hadn't married you, I wouldn't be so delicate. I'm fine."
"Your face is all red, so you're fine. That's why I said, in this world, no one will treat you well except me, and no one loves you more than me."
He gets all cocky after getting a little sunshine. I squeezed his hand and wrapped my arms around his waist. What he said was true, but he was just too arrogant.
"Ying'er, turn around and hug me to sleep, otherwise I'll rub against your waist. Tomorrow I'll take care of the children. If you try to help, I don't care if your back hurts or not, you have to take care of me."
"I know!" I was about to fall asleep when he threatened me again. I turned around and went to sleep in his arms: "It's best to hold you. If you dare to leave me alone, I feel like I'm ruining you."
"My wife is so fierce, and she pleases me in every way. How could I dare to abandon you?"
He's really good at sweet talk. I fell asleep leaning against Xie Yuancheng. His arms were so warm and comforting.
When I woke up this morning, my back felt like it was filled with lead, and I couldn't move at all.
"Ying'er, I'll go get the medicine in a bit. Don't get out of bed. You'll feel better this afternoon. After these few days, my happiness will be back."
Xie Yuancheng smiled at me, and before I could react, he went to take care of the little ones. I was worried he couldn't handle three children; this is a woman's job, and he's doing it all for them.
I touched my face and body, wondering what it was about that made him so protective of me. Was I just too lucky?
"It's a good thing I came back; otherwise, I wouldn't have known Ying'er was lonely." Xie Yuancheng suddenly appeared out of nowhere, squeezing my hand: "Ying'er~"
"I was just thinking, you're being too nice to me. What is it about you that attracts you? I should make the most of my strengths?"
"It's you. If it were someone with the same name, I wouldn't even give them a second glance. When I saw you in the palace, I wanted you, and that's why you ignored me."
"Let's not talk about this anymore. Anyway, you're mine, that's enough." I pulled him down to lean on me. Xie Yuancheng is such a jerk, I can't live without him.
"Ying'er, I'll stay with you again tonight. The children are all up. Mother isn't here, but Father will."
I finally let go of his hand, avoiding his gaze; my ears and face were definitely red. Xie Yuancheng covered me with the blanket and went out. My back was numb, so I could only continue lying down.
"Mommy~" It's my good Yu'er. I reached out and pulled him to the bedside. His little face was covered in sweat. At least he didn't call me lazy today.
Xie Yuancheng carried Su Ling in, and Xi Zhi held his hand. He really thought the place wasn't lively enough, so he brought the children to make a ruckus.
Yu'er waved for Su Ling and Xi Zhi to come over. The three pairs of big eyes stared at me, and they spoke to me in childish voices, saying a bunch of baby talk.
"My lord, General Yin and his men have returned, and they brought several cages into the capital. I heard they are a few stinky girls who can identify people."
Lin Chao's voice disappeared at the door. Xie Yuancheng went out to talk to him, and then Qiao'er and the nanny came in to help take care of the child.
"Qiao'er, do you know where Wan'er went?"
With Xie Yuancheng present, I can't ask directly; I can only inquire privately now. I don't want to upset him, but I genuinely care about Wan'er.
"Miss, don't you know? She's going to be a mother. Madam arranged for her to stay in the manor, in the place where the princess used to live. Anxiang goes out to run errands from time to time. She had just left when you came back."
"She's going to be a mother!" I was stunned. I thought she and Anxiang had gone back to the palace with Li Zhaole.
"Yes, her pregnancy was very difficult, and she had to stay in bed for the last two weeks. You were also sick, so you didn't say anything."
"Did you bring anything to nourish your body?" Yu'er came over with the little wooden bird. I fixed its wings for him and asked him to take care of his younger siblings.
"Of course we have them. Madam really loves us. We won't be short of these things." Qiao'er had a smile on her face, so it seemed that she really was very kind.
But, just as I was about to ask whose child Wan'er was carrying, Xie Yuancheng returned, and Qiao'er stepped aside.
"Ying'er, there's good news. The Empress's relatives have been proven innocent this time. She thought those girls wouldn't betray her, so she offered them some benefits, and they all confessed. Several of the leaders have come to confront her, including that illegitimate daughter."
"Are they still alive?" I asked in a very low voice, so that only the two of us could hear me.
“They are no ordinary people. Add to that the people from the capital this time, and they are enough to warrant punishment.”
Xie Yuancheng laughed heartily. He just enjoyed these kinds of things. Anyone would be happy to see someone who had done wrong being executed.
"Go play with the children," I told him. He magically produced medicine, intending to treat my illness.
"Qiao'er, you all help take Yu'er and the others back, and whatever you do, don't come over, understand!"
Xie Yuancheng always liked to scare young ladies. Qiao'er was probably frightened by the seriousness on his face, so she went out with the nanny and the children.
When Yu'er saw me smile at him, he took the initiative to hold his younger siblings' hands and go out the door, waving to me as well.
These three little ones are finally getting along well. They can handle minor squabbles without any problems, but I'm worried they might fight one of them.
Xie Yuancheng started fiddling with the medicine. He first lit a fire, then cut and ground the herbs. Watching him go in and out made me uncomfortable even while lying down.
This time I had to apply medicine and drink it. I felt dizzy as soon as the medicine was changed. Xie Yuancheng brought over a bowl of medicine. He had worked hard to brew it, and I drank it all even though it tasted terrible.
"Ying'er~ Get some sleep. I'll take care of you personally these next two days." Xie Yuancheng smiled at me while holding an empty bowl.
My eyelids were drooping, and in my daze I saw my mother come in, and then I fell asleep.
This time I even had a dream. I dreamt that the Hu people had already joined forces from within and without. Although the capital was well-defended, there were still loopholes.
News was circulating daily from the patrol team that someone was working in cahoots with them. They planned to open the city gates and rush in the day after tomorrow at noon, when the shadow of the pillar in the capital was perfectly aligned. Many people would suffer, and even the Prince's mansion was not spared. The children were terrified.
I woke up with a start, but thankfully Xie Yuancheng was there to protect me. I quickly tugged at his sleeve, and Xie Yuancheng, thinking I was unwell, asked me a lot of questions.
"Stop for a minute!" I leaned against him, and he went to check the ointment. When he saw that everything was alright, he listened to me.
I described the events of my dream in great detail, including their appearances. This was a calamity for the capital, and the children were still very young.
"Ying'er, I've arranged everything, don't worry. Everything will be alright." He held me in his arms, comforting me.
“Yuancheng, you must go. If you uncover their plan and drive them out this time, it will prove that you can manage Linyang well. Once you are separated from Linyang, you will have a much easier time.”
