Only a small part of the gold thread was visible, and the teachers didn't get too close when they came to look. Ling Wu followed the teacher around with a curious expression; he actually had a studious side.
"Father, what are these things?" Lingwu squatted down to look at them, and only spoke when the teacher brought something closer.
"It's a lifeline. I know why we can never track down anyone. They use this as a cover, to pass messages between each other, and to control people from afar."
The thread wasn't broken; it must have been cut too late during the escape. Whether this will be a breakthrough depends on luck.
The teacher gave Xie Yuancheng a small black bottle. When the men in black came out, Ling Wu hid behind the teacher. It was rare to see him afraid of these people.
Xie Yuancheng handed the items to them, and after the men in black left, we set up camp where we were for the time being. I looked around, hoping to make some new discoveries. They were incredibly ingenious to be able to communicate through a thin thread.
"Ying'er, stop looking around. Let's not force it. What if it's a trap? You'll be in trouble."
Xie Yuancheng stopped me, and when the teacher came over to question me, he shook his head even more, saying that Xie Yuancheng was too selfish and wouldn't let me learn anything.
"Teacher, please don't talk about him. Yuancheng was so nervous just now."
"Sigh, of course we have to be nervous. When we chased after them, it was a dummy. I just don't understand why they're so determined to fight Linyang. If they want a fiefdom, they should just work hard to climb up the ranks themselves. Why use Linyang as a stepping stone for them?"
"This world is not easy. They want to gain something for nothing, have status and wealth, and maybe even rise to the top and ascend to a throne."
I started comforting them. First, Xie Yuancheng laughed, then Ling Wu and the others laughed too. Was I wrong? I felt I was right. Xie Yuancheng even reassured me that the idea was good, but I shouldn't tell anyone.
"Sigh~" I started shaking my head. I sat down on the grass with Xie Yuancheng. It was still cold, so I leaned against him to keep warm.
They were all acquaintances; they knew we were close. The teacher was right there, so nothing would happen. I leaned against him and felt sleepy, and I don't know when I fell asleep.
But God really is on our side. I dreamed about some things, all about vague people. I can only guess that they were probably the group of people Xie Yuancheng was looking for.
They didn't actually run away; they just created a false impression and spread misinformation, hoping to get Xie Yuancheng to send away all the talented and extraordinary people around him so that they could go to the mansion to work as servants, and occasionally find opportunities to get close to Xie Yuancheng and gain his approval.
The Marquis's mansion was quickly occupied by them. By the time Xie Yuancheng realized what was happening, Linyang had already been overrun by these locusts. I remember the hill where they were hiding; it did look small, but I never imagined they would actually be hiding there.
"This is outrageous!" These people can't be called parasites anymore, they're just pests, and they're giant locusts that only eat other people's hard work!
"Ying'er, are you feeling unwell?" Xie Yuancheng rubbed my chest, and only after my eyes focused did I realize that I was still in the same spot.
Worried that someone might be eavesdropping, and not knowing how the thin line appeared, I pulled Xie Yuancheng aside and whispered in his ear about my dream. His brows furrowed again.
"Teacher, let's send some more people to chase after them." Xie Yuancheng told me to sit down. He went to talk to the teacher because he was planning to turn the tables and wipe them out in the end.
"Alright, let's move forward and go back to make a proper plan."
The teacher truly lived up to his reputation as the one who raised Xie Yuancheng; he could even glean different meanings from such a simple conversation. Xie Yuancheng instructed Ling Wu to reorganize the troops, and they continued forward, leaving only a few soldiers to watch over the fine line.
After I got on the team, I felt a little more relaxed. People are never satisfied. They have a very clear division of labor, from the front end to the center, and they are a very organized group.
"Ying'er, from now on I want to live in your head and see what you're thinking."
Even at this point, Xie Yuancheng still had the mood to joke with me. I told him to pay attention to the people and things around him, as I felt we were overlooking something.
āIām still a little worried. Since you can dream about it, it might be a metaphor. You need to be more careful. This dream is different from the usual ones.ā
"I understand. Tell me more details, and I'll think about it carefully."
Xie Yuancheng leaned closer to listen, and I told him all the details of my dream. I also tried to recall the dream and guess its contents from time to time. These people are very good at setting up schemes, making them fall into the trap and then pretend to be the good guys.
After I finished speaking, I realized that the teacher was gone, and Lingwu was riding away on another path. I quickly asked Xie Yuancheng, and he said that they had gone to take care of some business.
"Wouldn't you?" I worried that his cleverness might backfire.
"No, let's go into the city first and see if there are any extra guests at the mansion. As the hosts, we should speak to them properly."
Xie Yuancheng had a smile on his face, and my mind went blank. I was relieved because I knew he wouldn't make a mistake if he had already planned it out. How could he know someone had gone to the manor when he was out there?
We arrived at the gate when it was dark, and by the time we entered the city, it was just the two of us. Xie Yuancheng casually tossed the horse reins over and led me into the mansion.
"Yuancheng." Li Ruowei came over in a hurry. "It's very lively at the entrance today. Several people came with bundles on their backs looking for things to do, saying they can help you with your troubles."
"I'm not a good-for-nothing, will my sister accept them?"
"Of course not. There are so many people in the manor, why would we need more? We sent them away several times, but they kept coming back, so we had someone invite them to have a few pots of tea."
"Add some honeysuckle to calm them down, and they'll understand the pros and cons of the situation."
Are these siblings speaking in riddles? They can't really be talking about drinking ordinary tea, can they? Since what happened last time, Li Ruowei hasn't brought anyone into the mansion.
I suddenly realized what was strange about these people. They assumed that after setting up the scheme, they would let Xie Yuancheng walk into it. But they forgot that the Marquis's mansion had weathered many storms, and not just anyone could be brought in.
No wonder Xie Yuancheng came back; with Li Ruowei in charge, he's going to interrogate her personally. After Li Ruowei left, Xie Yuancheng took me back to bathe. When I passed by the small courtyard, I saw Liangyan and Yan'er running around with the little ones.
"Children are the best. You don't have to think about anything. Ying'er, my sister and I have things to do tonight. If you're bored in the yard, come and play with the children."
"Really?" I was a little incredulous that he would be so kind.
"Of course, they'll be asleep around 9 PM anyway, so you won't be able to play with them for long~"
I knew he had ulterior motives, but of course I was happy to play with the children, so I quickly dragged him back to take a bath.
