Wen Zichen tried to persuade them, but Shao Lingwei told them to take the dog and walk behind. She and Ali followed behind. Feng Can refused to go; he wanted to stay in the inn and keep watch in case any fools came along.
The shopkeeper's daughter, seeing the big dog, clung to the shopkeeper's leg and hid behind him. She's become quite timid; she can always smell foul odors, and she doesn't know where they're coming from.
As Liang Lingyun walked down the street, the three large dogs, which were usually silent, would bark wildly at anyone who approached. In a corner sat some barefoot women and maids.
They glanced over every now and then, their eyes filled with amazement. A few of the bolder ones approached them, but before they could even open their mouths, they were frightened away by the barking of the large dog.
"It really works! Let's go get something good to eat!" Liang Lingyun was overjoyed and led the dog forward.
Shao Lingwei walked behind Wen Zichen, with Ali following beside her: "Brother Yun is really like a little kid. Are you scared?"
"It's best to be careful in a place like this." Wen Zichen pulled Shao Lingwei to the other side. He had already sent a letter out. This opportunity was hard to come by. It would be a waste of Wen Yang's youth if he didn't try.
“Zichen, look at those people. They’re deliberately dressed so shabbily. They might be the villains who climb into other people’s beds and roll around in them in the middle of the night.”
Shao Lingwei has lost all compassion for the pitiful; those who should be the weaker party are instead met with disgust. Wen Zichen tried to comfort her, but he didn't know what to say; it was good for them to get out for a walk.
When they arrived at a rather elegant-looking place, Liang Lingyun saw the sign outside and was about to go in when several maids jumped out and knelt in front of them, stretching out their dirty hands.
"Hey brothers, could you give us some food? We're so hungry!"
"Are you hungry?" Liang Lingyun asked. The five girls looked up, their dirty faces gleaming with starlight. Liang Lingyun snorted coldly, "If you're hungry, go make some money. Once you have money, you can eat."
"Yeah, that's right~ This guy is right~" The waiter inside clapped along. These people stinked, the smell filled the whole place. "Are you leaving or not? If you don't leave, I'll get a stick and beat you up."
They were familiar with those girls; they were thick-skinned and fearless. So they continued kneeling and begging. Liang Lingyun asked the waiter if the guests inside minded their dogs barking.
"No problem, buddy, feel free to do as you please. We all enjoy listening to dogs bark; it's much better than some people's voices."
The waiter clapped his hands. There were hardly any customers left inside; he was so bored that these people still wanted to come to the shop to ask for food.
"Woof woof woof!" The big dog barked wildly. Shao Lingwei leaned against Wen Zichen's chest. The sound was so terrifying that her hands trembled when she heard it.
The kneeling people thought the dog wouldn't bite them, but they were wrong. The big dog opened its mouth wide and bit them, drooling.
"Wow~ Run!" the tallest one shouted, and everyone ran away, but the stench was still strong.
The people around them clapped along, considering whether to ask the county government to buy some fierce big dogs, preferably the kind that bite, that would definitely drive people away.
"Please come in, gentlemen." The waiter splashed water on the food to dilute the smell a bit.
Some onlookers also went in to eat. Once inside, they were asked for money by the beggars outside. If they didn't give them money, they would just watch them eat while they spit out their saliva. They were all dirty and smelled terrible. It was disgusting.
Just as Shao Lingwei was about to follow Wen Zichen inside, she felt a hand wrap around her leg: "Ah! Who is it!"
"Sister~ You're a good person, please give me something~" A shameless girl hugged Shao Lingwei's leg. Her eyes were very clear. If it were someone who didn't know the situation, they probably wouldn't be able to resist giving her money.
Ali went and brought a dog over. Taking advantage of Shao Lingwei's fear, she clung to her leg and wouldn't let go. Shao Lingwei was about to be suffocated by the stench; it was even worse than a latrine!
"Woof!" This dog is fierce. Ali shouted, "Pretty sister, don't be afraid, it only bites smelly things!"
When the girl saw the dog scratch her face, she rolled around a few times crying and howling. She was then kicked by the onlookers, which was very satisfying.
"Ptooey! It stinks!" Shao Lingwei couldn't stand the smell. Wen Zichen told Liang Lingyun and the others to buy some appetizers to take back, and he would take Shao Lingwei home first.
"That's outrageous! All of you get out of the way, I'd rather have the dog eat it!"
"Sir, you can't bear to do that. If the dog eats something dirty, it won't be able to do things for us anymore." The waiter gloated from the side: "Look, it can still get up and run away even after being kicked by everyone. If it ate something dirty, it would get diarrhea."
"Haha~" What was originally a terrifying statement was met with loud laughter from those who knew the whole story.
Liang Lingyun and Ali were both growing, so they ordered some meat and fish, and also some dishes that girls like to eat for Shao Lingwei before they sat down.
Wen Zichen and Feng Can said that they only needed to write about the food and drink, and that it should be hot when they arrived.
As soon as the food and drinks were served, a loud wailing and lamentation began outside, saying that her daughter's face was ruined and she would never be able to get married, demanding compensation from them!
"Pah! Look at your faces, who would want you? Right?"
"Yeah, she's ugly as hell, and she smells terrible. If someone hugs her, they'd think they're hugging a toilet!"
"That's right, who was pretending to be pitiful just now, hugging that girl and not letting go, the girl was even knocked out by the smell."
"You still have the nerve to come here!" An old woman went over with a stick, and a group of women came over with theirs: "You all get out of the way, we can't chase them out, we'll all take out our weapons and beat them up, it'll be good to vent our anger, we can't eat or drink every day because of the smell!"
"Support the old lady! Hit her! Hit her! Hit her!" The onlookers surrounded them, preventing them from leaving. When the old lady stretched out her claws, each person kicked her.
The constables outside clapped their hands in disbelief, waiting for the girls to suffer so much before throwing them out of the city gate. They came in all dressed so respectably, but now they're begging for food and drink, treating everyone like easy targets.
Even if they're being taken advantage of, why should I support them just to disgust myself, or be woken up in the middle of the night by the stench?
Liang Lingyun and Ali heard the noise inside and let them go as they pleased. They ate and drank their fill before taking the packed food back. The people outside had all left, but the smell was still lingering.
"This smell is too strange. They might have used a foul odor, otherwise why would it smell so bad?" Ali started to get distracted. He felt that something was amiss.
"I guess so. I've heard that some sects specialize in repairing stinky things. It's unbelievable. Let's go back quickly."
Liang Lingyun went back to release the dog and took some things upstairs to Shao Lingwei. She vomited as soon as she got back and couldn't eat anything, so Wen Zichen had to make her some honey herbal tea to soothe her stomach.
He was also considering what was happening here. Just then, the constables threw out several people who had openly caused trouble. He asked Liang Lingyun and Ali to check on them and then spread the news to attract the attention of the imperial court.
