Chapter 454 Revisiting the Past

I was listening intently to the kingfisher's words when Xie Yuancheng lifted the curtain and came in again. I took the kingfisher and lay down beside him, and he followed suit to listen.

"Go away, you can't understand what we're saying anyway."

“Ying’er~ My clothes aren’t even ready yet. Look, they’re slung across my shoulder. The teacher was asking about it just now, and I told him you pulled them. He made me come in and apologize to you.”

"Pah! I don't believe you!" I told the kingfisher to continue. It was such a coward; as soon as Xie Yuancheng came in, it crawled into my pocket and lay down. "See? It's all your fault that it stopped talking."

"No, I didn't. You just told me this as soon as I got into the carriage. I can tell you didn't sleep well last night. Come and warm up my blankets."

He really was going to sleep, so I put a pillow under his head and thought he could talk to the kingfisher after he fell asleep. But he kept his eyes open and stared at me.

"Didn't you say you were sleepy? Close your eyes and go to sleep." I was already urging him, but he was the one who said he was sleepy, yet he was staring at me with his eyes open.

"What are you two discussing? I called you from outside and you didn't answer?"

"Did he call me?" I didn't want to tell him what he was talking about. Xie Yuancheng nodded so hard he was practically springing up. "Go tell me the story from the book. I'm getting sleepy even if you're not. I'm not going to talk to you anymore."

I covered him with the blanket, let him lean closer, and tried to lull him to sleep so we could chat with the kingfisher later. But I forgot that Xie Yuancheng is the most persistent; he didn't fall asleep, but I did.

But since I was meeting the kingfisher in my dream, he couldn't overhear me. I continued to ask it, "How did you know? Did you calculate it?"

"Of course it's foresight. Otherwise, how could you have the ability to dream about the future? My abilities are weaker than Master's, but stronger than yours. If you hadn't believed me at the beginning, I would have left long ago. But we are destined to meet, and I will protect you from now on."

"But can the old emperor really keep the Great Zhao good for that long? I always felt that he was a shrewd man who liked to hear bad things and bring bad luck to good people."

"Of course he is. He is the emperor, and he is weighing all the options. Look, he didn't completely wipe out the Ninth Prince's family. He left your man a way out. Otherwise, how would you two have met?"

"Then tell me, did Xie Yuancheng really wet his pants when he saw me?"

"Hey! You wet your pants when you were little, you weren't an adult yet, look how pleased you are with yourself."

"It really is! Let me see what he looked like back then. I'm so curious." I went to stroke the kingfisher's feathers and asked it to tell me what it looked like back then.

“Go back and look at your eldest son now. The way he looks after wetting his pants is just like how your husband looked when he was a child. But your husband was cuter when he was a child. He was cold and aloof, and he looked at everyone with suspicion. He only smiled at you, and you wouldn’t let him hug you. He held a grudge for the rest of his life.”

"Serves you right!" I laughed so hard I woke up. I turned to look at Xie Yuancheng, his eyes wide with disbelief. I quickly grabbed the blanket and lay back down.

"What did you dream about again!" Xie Yuancheng came over and pressed my hand down, making me look at him. "Tell me! I heard you talking about me, and you even said I deserved it!"

"No, no, you must have misheard me." I turned away guiltily. How could I talk about this? It had all happened, and he had already admitted it.

"If you don't tell me, I'll make sure you can't get up!" He leaned closer, and I quickly told him that it was just about him wetting his pants when he was three years old, and I didn't say anything else.

"Ying'er! This happened so long ago, if we start from the beginning, you're the one who should be held responsible!"

"I was less than a year old at the time, and I couldn't even speak yet!"

"You can't talk but you run fast. You're gone in the blink of an eye. You short legs can run faster than me, and you still dare to complain about me!"

"Okay, okay, it's all my fault. If you wet your pants again when you're three years old in your next life, I'll definitely let you hug me~ Children instinctively refuse people. You must have been all dirty and wet your pants, so of course I wouldn't let you hug me."

"How dare you say that!" Xie Yuancheng pinched my face and looked at me. I started to get emotional, and my eyes were full of tears. Only then did he calm down.

"Don't push me away next time! And don't refuse to let me hug you! And don't have any wild dreams!"

"Okay~" You're really meddling. The first two requests are fine, and it's not like I can control what he dreams. I'll just agree to it for now and make him happy so I can feel better.

Xie Yuancheng started nagging me again, recounting everything from when we met until now. It's amazing how he could connect the dots. I just let it go in one ear and out the other, and I didn't even dare to close my eyes to sleep, for fear that he would suddenly change his attitude again.

If the teacher hadn't called him outside to talk, I probably would have been scolded until I went deaf. As soon as he left, I rubbed my ears. Surviving under his verbal sparring is really too difficult.

The kingfishers had all gone to sleep, so I had to open a book to read. It was quieter there, so I wouldn't miss their calls. I specifically looked at page thirty-three; this story of Zhong Kui catching ghosts was getting more and more terrifying.

Compared to other places, the colors here are brighter. Could it be that the page corresponding to each experience lights up? I flipped through several places, and there are indeed records, but they are very small. I'm starting to wonder how this book was compiled? It's so comprehensive; one book can help you find solutions.

The more I looked at it, the happier I became. When I went to the inn to rest that night, I showed it to Xie Yuancheng. He glanced at it twice and didn't say anything.

"Cheer up a little! I've told you everything, and you still have that long face, and you're not even eating dinner tonight!"

"I'm just unhappy. You can talk so happily about a bird, but then you turn away from me!"

"Nothing of the sort! You just overthink things!" I put my arm around his shoulder and rubbed his stomach. "Are you hungry tonight? I'll boil you two eggs?"

"I won't eat!" I could tell he was really angry, so I grabbed his arm and pulled him away, snuggling into his arms, my face still expressionless.

"Then tell me, how can we stop being picky eaters? If we're both picky eaters, we'll end up as skinny little old men and women."

"I won't let you become a skinny little old lady. I will take good care of you."

"But you can't even take care of yourself, I don't believe you. You're such a picky eater that you don't even eat dinner, how can I trust you?"

"Ying'er~" Seeing that his tone had weakened, I pulled and dragged Xie Yuancheng out, telling him to make something to eat. It's easy to get angry when you're hungry, and it's not good for your health.

"Here you go, if you don't eat, I won't leave and I'll sleep in the kitchen!" He was quite skilled at starting the fire, and he had already boiled the eggs and made some vegetarian porridge, but he just looked at them and wouldn't eat them. I even peeled the eggshells for him.

"Then feed me, I'm not hungry." He's so thin, yet he's not hungry. I fed him one thing at a time. Luckily, I'm pretty generous, and Xie Yuancheng ate everything.
