Chapter Eighty-Four: A Night Visit to Sizhou City (Part One)

I was about to speak when my father glared at me with a sharp look, which startled me.

"I have considered the concerns of the generals and soldiers. Although it is said that one should not pursue a defeated enemy, only by pressing on while the enemy is winning can we subdue Sizhou as soon as possible and give peace to the people who are still taking refuge in the valley."

"Your Highness, this matter requires careful consideration. Why don't we first send the vanguard to scout out the strength of Sizhou before planning the night raid?"

The crown prince rolled his eyes a few times. This would result in far fewer losses than a direct night raid, so he agreed.

As Dad walked out, he made a gesture to me, and I followed behind.

Once they reached a less crowded area, he spoke: "Ying'er, this is a military camp. Don't cause trouble."

“Father, I want to volunteer to visit Sizhou City at night and then relinquish my status as the imperial son-in-law. Yu’er is still young, and I can’t very well pretend to be the imperial son-in-law and just watch him from afar.”

Yu'er's name was chosen by his father himself, so I had to sacrifice my poor child to soften his grandfather's heart.

“That’s too risky, I don’t agree. When Yuan Cheng mentioned it to me, I thought of faking my death on the battlefield. With me there, it’s less likely that something will go wrong.”

"Father, it's easier to get into trouble if you fake your death on the battlefield."

"How so?"

"The Crown Prince has always harbored resentment towards me. The last time he sent me into battle, it was to test my strength. If I suddenly die for the country, he'll have to investigate thoroughly from top to bottom."

I watched as my father stroked his beard and continued, "Therefore, the best time is in Sizhou City."

"General Ji, Prince Consort, you left earlier, but I didn't expect you to be here. I've been looking for you quite a bit."

"Your Highness!"

"No need for formalities. We're practically family, there's no need to be so distant."

Of course I have to be polite with you, otherwise I wouldn't even know how I died.

"General Ji, you look very serious. Has something happened?"

"Your Highness is concerned. It is the Prince Consort who wants to discuss with me the matter of our nighttime visit to Sizhou City."

"Oh, that's good. After thinking it over, I think the night visit method is feasible. Have you decided which soldier to send?"

"Your Highness, I volunteer."

"The prince consort is indeed born into a military family; we think alike."

Sigh, I knew he wouldn't let me off the hook. The Empress and his birth mother are enemies, and I am Li Zhaole's husband. It's no wonder he wouldn't treat me well.

"Your Highness."

“General Ji, I know your concerns, which is why I am going with the Prince Consort this time. Firstly, it will demonstrate the majesty of the royal family, and secondly, it will inspire the soldiers.”

If you come with me, I'd rather die on the battlefield.

"Your Highness, you are of inestimable worth and should not take any risks."

Xie Yuancheng's voice rang out, and when I turned around, I saw that he had brought a woman with him. I was worried about his safety, and he, on the other hand, had brought a woman with him.

"aunt."

“I ran into Yuancheng in the valley, and he told me you had come.”

"I haven't seen my aunt for many days, and I miss her very much."

This is the first time I've ever seen the Crown Prince speak so sincerely; this aunt must be someone very important to him.

“I just heard that you are going to Sizhou. There are portraits of you everywhere there. If you go in and get captured, it will be bad for Dazhao, and even worse for you.”

“Aunt, I’ve come here to recapture Sizhou City; I have no other business here.”

"You are the Crown Prince, and you must prioritize the well-being of the nation. Didn't you just say that the Imperial Son-in-Law is willing to go? He is our royal son-in-law, so it's good that he does it in his place."

I smiled and nodded in agreement; what this aunt said was particularly insightful.

"But."

"There's no 'but' about it. Yuan Cheng is here, so they can go together without any problems."

If that's the case, then that would be even better.

"Your Highness, I will go with the Prince Consort to make preparations."

The eldest princess? That makes sense. The crown prince calls her aunt, so she must be the emperor's sister or older sister. But this aunt seems rather young, around thirty years old.

As I walked past my father, I saw him nod gently, and I finally felt relieved.

"Ying'er, come and change your clothes quickly. We'll go out through the other path."

"Are we the only ones going?"

“Anshi and the others have already arrived in the city and made preparations in advance.”

"Finally, I can leave here and go out to see the world."

"Don't wander off later, stay close to me."

"yes."

"Don't go around messing with those girls."

I looked at the women's clothing in my hand. With this outfit, there's no way I could attract any girls.

After changing, I casually applied some rouge and left with Xie Yuancheng.

Luckily, Bizhu gave me a box back then, and now I'm using it. After all, we're married now, and I should look radiant in front of my husband.

The path was quiet, surrounded by trees and bushes, and thankfully it wasn't difficult to walk.

Soon, it was still early, so we walked slowly.

"Yuan Cheng, which princess is it? Is she the Emperor's sister or elder sister?"

"You're just curious. But she's no ordinary person; she has the Crown Prince's complete trust."

"So, does that mean she has to stay in the military camp so I can avoid the Crown Prince? He's practically menopausal thirty years early; he's targeting me in every way."

"Ying'er, what did you just say? Who is the Crown Prince?"

"He's just a person with a bad temper who likes to cause trouble."

I accidentally revealed what Ji Shuang was saying. I remember she used to talk to a girl she was very close to about who suddenly went through menopause and what happened to that girl.

“He’s always like this. There’s a river ahead; I’ll carry you across.”
