Chapter Forty-Six: Passing Off Fish Eyes as Pearls

As Anxiang poured hot water, she said, "Don't worry, Prince Consort, everything has been arranged according to the Princess's requirements on the Marquis's side. After you've finished soaking, Wan'er and I will bring you lunch."

I nodded. Luckily, he's a marquis; he shouldn't be too bad.

Wan'er wanted to help me scrub my back, but I quickly refused. If she saw me doing that, it would be terrible.

As soon as I lay down in the bathtub, I relaxed completely and loosened the bra. Ji Ying is truly gifted; after so many years of binding her chest, she's still developed quite well.

Even without makeup or skincare products, my skin is incredibly good. I'm growing to love this body more and more.

After soaking, I would dry my hair with a coarse cloth and tie it up before they would pour out the water. Every time, Wan'er would say that I soaked for a particularly long time, and she was worried that I might faint.

I need to disguise myself, so it will definitely take a while.

It was so cold when I opened the door. Wan'er said that Li Zhaole had gone to the Empress's place, which was exactly what I wanted.

I climbed up the wall using a ladder from the backyard, and then had Wan'er remove the ladder. Consort Ji really sent a good girl; she's helped us out of danger so many times. Last time she saw her purse was missing, I felt guilty for a long time just from her expression.

Luckily, I had a jade hairpin hidden away, which I used as an apology. She wore it in her hair every day, and her infatuation made me feel guilty.

Xie Yuancheng had a ladder in his courtyard, and when Meng Anshi saw me, he immediately brought the ladder over.

When I got to the ground, I hurriedly asked Xie Yuancheng about his condition, and he said he was fine.

I told him to hurry and open the door to go in. He was already lying in bed, so it was alright.

"Yuancheng." I walked over and touched his forehead. Luckily, it wasn't too hot. His hands were always cold, but thankfully I had brought a hand warmer. "Yuancheng, let me warm your hands."

He finally opened his eyes. "You still know how to come over."

"Li Zhaole told me this morning that we still have to save face, so we should just go along with her for now."

"Even if she gets angry, I have a way to deal with it."

"Yes, I know. Let me show you something to calm you down." I'm wearing that women's outfit in the picture today. I asked Wan'er to prepare some medicine that makes women more fertile. She told me to grind it into powder and take it with hot water every day.

At first, she looked at me with suspicion, thinking I was up to no good. Later, I used the name of the Marquis's wife to get her to help with the matching.

I am the Marquis's wife; this is not lying to her.

Xie Yuancheng is going to the battlefield. Putting everything else aside, if anything unexpected happens in the future, I want to have a child with him while I'm still conscious.

I took off all my outer clothes, leaving only my women's clothing underneath. I applied some perfume to my neck, just in case he wasn't tempted.

"Ying'er, why are you still applying these things to me?"

"Because I was afraid you wouldn't come with me."

"Silly~"

This is the boldest thing I've ever done here, but I get nervous every time I think about the war movies and TV shows I've watched before.

I probably can't get in touch with that shopkeeper now. Every day when I wake up, I check to make sure it's a familiar place, and I only breathe a sigh of relief when everything is normal.

"Yuancheng, here's a little bottle for you." The young shop assistant said this could save lives in critical moments. I don't know if it's true, but I'll keep it with me to put my mind at ease.

He brushed the messy hair off my face and said, "Keep it. When I get back, I'll take you to see the extraordinary person I found, so you won't keep talking nonsense."

I'm not talking nonsense. It's clearly true, but I have no evidence whatsoever.

I fell asleep in his arms. Ji Ying had always worn a sachet to maintain his masculine appearance since he was little. I don't know if Wan'er's medicine will work. But I'll give it a try. Ever since I came back, I've been taking all sorts of supplements.

Fortunately, I usually give them the impression of being frail and sickly, which allowed me to get away with it.

That day, I had just come back from outside when I felt something was wrong. Could I be pregnant? But I've only been pregnant for half a month.

I couldn't eat dinner, so I lay down to rest. Who knew Li Zhaole would come straight in: "Xiren said you're not feeling well again. I've already had them summon the imperial physician, he'll be here soon."

The imperial physicians could tell the difference between a man and a woman just by feeling their pulse. I was nervous; what should I do?

"What's wrong with you again? You look terrible," Li Zhaole asked with concern. I quickly made up an excuse, saying I was dizzy and wanted to take a nap. Luckily, the Empress had sent Li Zhaole some antiques, and she went out to look at them.

"Wan'er, give this to the Marquis and tell him I won't be talking to him today." I hurriedly used the rouge I had hidden under my pillow to write down the general situation with a hairpin, covered the rouge, and then told Wan'er to deliver it quickly.

Xie Yuancheng arrived very quickly; Wan'er hadn't even returned yet when he climbed in through the window.

"Yuancheng, I'm afraid you'll have to make do with this later." I tugged at his sleeve and pleaded with him to take my pulse instead, saying it was absolutely right.

"Where do you feel unwell? Let me take a look." He can even take a pulse, so I don't need to risk leaving the palace to find a doctor outside.

Wan'er knocked on the door from outside: "Your Highness, the imperial physician has arrived."

"Tell them to wait a moment."

After Xie Yuancheng lay down, I snuggled up next to him and covered myself with the blanket. I then realized how thin he really was; he was almost as thin as Ji Ying. How could he possibly survive on the battlefield looking like this?

The imperial physician stroked his beard as Li Zhaole walked in from outside. Although her face remained expressionless, it was clear that she was quite worried.

“Princess, there’s no need to worry. The Prince Consort is simply overworked. The weather is cold now, so it’s understandable that he might have a poor appetite. I’ll prescribe some tonics to replenish his qi and blood; he’ll be fine after a few days of recuperation. However, he still needs to be careful, as he suffered a serious injury and requires extra care.” I gripped Xie Yuancheng’s hand tightly. He had suffered a serious injury?

Li Zhaole's expression was solemn. "Anxiang, pay attention to what the imperial physician said." Then she turned to me and said, "You should rest well. The medicine from the palace is the most effective."

After they all left, I crawled under the covers and asked, "How could he be so badly injured? Where is he injured?" He had no wounds and everything seemed normal. I wouldn't have known if the imperial physician hadn't told me today.

"That happened a long time ago. I've been taking my medication on time, so it's fine."

"How can it not be a problem? Let me see."

Xie Yuancheng's wound was very close to his heart. My hands were shaking, and I pressed my face against it: "Does it hurt?"

"It doesn't hurt anymore. I didn't notice it at the time. Later, my teacher and I secretly set up many places to practice martial arts in the valley."

I felt like I couldn't breathe, and tears streamed down my face.

"Ying'er, this happened many years ago. I wouldn't even remember it if you didn't bring it up today." This liar, even his words don't sound real.

"My lord, I've brought you your medicine." She actually pushed the door open and came in; thankfully, we were both covered with blankets.

I mischievously stole a kiss from Xie Yuancheng's face and slipped out: "Let's put it aside for a while, I can't drink it right now."
