Chapter Nineteen: The Twist of Facts

Xie Yuancheng suddenly approached. I heard Wan'er and the others' footsteps returning not far away, so I quickly hid to the side.

He suddenly flicked his wide sleeves and pulled me into his arms, stealing a kiss. The men here are all unreliable. Even if he truly likes Ji Ying, it's not me.

In a fit of anger, she quickly stomped on his instep. The man's expression changed swiftly, and he spoke in a normal tone: "Yingdi, you twisted your ankle just now. Let me help you walk."

I felt both embarrassed and angry, just then Wan'er's voice rang out: "Prince Consort, what's wrong? Um, Your Highness, let me help you up."

Xie Yuancheng: "No need, you are a girl after all, and boys are heavier. I'll do it." I deliberately squeezed his wrist, and he actually grabbed my hand back. Wan'er couldn't see it because of his sleeve.

Xie Yuancheng's cunning is undeniable; I can't outmaneuver him, so I'd better give in.

I had just stood still when I heard arguing coming from inside. Could it be that Lin Yu had really come clean? Judging from the voices inside, it was Li Zhaole's usual loud voice, sounding both anxious and angry.

I glanced at Xie Yuancheng, who gestured for me not to go in yet. That's right, inside are the princess of Da Zhao and the crown prince of Dong Qin, arguing over their personal feelings. It's better for us, as bystanders, to stay outside.

Wan'er recognized the voice: "She, it is her." I stopped her with my free hand, telling her to be quiet.

After a while, it started to drizzle outside, and it looked like it was going to rain heavily. I was wondering whether I should leave when I saw a man jump onto the roof and quickly leave.

I grabbed Xie Yuancheng's sleeve: "Yuancheng, brother, let's go in and take a look." It was rare for Xie Yuancheng to kindly let go of my hand, and I was finally able to move my wrist.

As soon as I entered the courtyard, the rain started to intensify. I looked down at Li Zhaole, who was squatting against the wall in the corner of the yard. She used to be so confident and arrogant, but seeing her like this today, I felt a pang of pity for her.

Wan'er went over first, knelt down next to Li Zhaole, and whispered, "Princess."

Li Zhaole glanced at her absentmindedly, then remained silent.

I stood next to her; the rain was pouring down, but thankfully I was wearing a hat so my hairstyle wouldn't get messed up.

Li Zhaole stood up, walking unsteadily, swaying slightly. That's how girls who are heartbroken are, I guess. I went over and took her hand; she looked at me and then collapsed into my arms.

Meng Anshi appeared out of nowhere, carried Li Zhaole out on his back, with Xiren following beside him.

Although I, Li Zhaole, am a bit taller, she is a bit fatter than me. Fortunately, Meng Anshi is here, so I should be more polite to him in the future.

The rain was pouring down. Since Li Zhaole had come to Linyang ahead of schedule without permission, Xie Yuancheng arranged for her to stay in Jinglin in the western suburbs, with Xiren accompanying her to serve her. I had just changed into a clean set of clothes when I heard that Wan'er was also going to stay in Jinglin. She knew medicine and could take Li Zhaole's pulse.

Although he spoke righteously to the two maids, I always felt that he was up to no good.

When Wan'er left, she glanced back at me. I knew she didn't want to stay here, but I was also at someone else's mercy and couldn't take care of her.

When I went outside, I found many guards standing there. "Why don't they go in and keep watch?"

Xie Yuancheng stood calmly to the side, saying, "If they go in, the people coming tonight won't be able to come."

This guy was being mysterious, keeping me in suspense. He knew I'd pry, but he only told me half the story. I had no choice but to follow him, determined not to believe he wouldn't tell me.
