Chapter Seventy-Six: Restoring Vitality

I saw that Xie Yuancheng had taken the bait, so I pressed my advantage.

"You said you can't go back on your word?"

"No regrets."

"Then take me with you this time."

Xie Yuancheng's wicked smile vanished, and his expression immediately changed: "No. The battlefield is dangerous, you're still weak after giving birth, and Yu'er is so young. You want him to grow up without his parents by his side."

"Don't try to pressure me with Yu'er. He's being taken care of by the wet nurse and Bizhu, so he'll be fine. Besides, I don't have much breast milk, and every time I see the look in his eyes, I feel guilty for a long time. Most importantly, I was heartbroken for a long time when you came back injured last time. If you go this time and don't hear from me at all, won't I die of depression? Do you want to come back and see my Qingzhong?"

"Don't talk nonsense. The situation at the front is critical. I should have gone a few days ago. You've only been out of confinement for ten days, that's why I'm staying to be with you."

I couldn't be fooled. I rolled my eyes and finally wiped away my tears: "Waaah, Xie Yuancheng, you must have a woman on the battlefield. Poor us, a widow and orphan, left in Linyang by you. Maybe next time you come back, you'll bring a second wife. No, I want to separate from you and take Yu'er back to the Ji family."

Xie Yuancheng was saying nice things to me from the side, so I just covered my head with the blanket and chuckled to myself under the covers.

"Ying'er, stop making a fuss. I promise you. But if anything changes, you must listen to me and come back immediately."

I quickly threw off the covers and hugged him tightly, knowing he would give in.

I dug out the Phantom Sword first thing in the morning; it was specially made for me by my father. I didn't know it at the time, but I found out when I woke up later that he had heard I had lost my sword and had searched many shops to make this sword for me.

“Ying’er, this sword is too light and not good for self-defense. I will forge you a new one.”

"This was given to me by my father. He didn't see it when I went there this time. Be careful, or he'll make things difficult for you."

Xie Yuancheng had a sword that was originally called the Xuan Tie Sword. Later, he actually added a photo of himself on the front of it. At the time, I didn't realize it, but now I know. He was afraid of losing me.

Even before I knew the truth, I was still worried about losing him.

"Ying'er, you're spacing out again. What have you been thinking about lately?"

"I was thinking of you. Let's go see Yu'er, and then practice our swordsmanship in the courtyard."

I dragged Xie Yuancheng along, and the smile on his face made me blush. I'm becoming more and more grateful to the shopkeeper. Although we're destined to be together, I wouldn't have realized how good he is without this unexpected turn of events.

The words on the note read: "Fate brings us together and fate separates us, I came at midnight, I will never fail you in this life!" I woke up in the middle of the night, and my mother was by my bedside, probably afraid I would fall.

Yu'er can smile now, and he's a miniature version of Xie Yuancheng. When he smiles with his mouth wide open, he looks especially well-behaved.

“Yuancheng, he looks just like you, like you were made from the same mold.”

“Ying’er, I think Yu’er is more like you.”

"Really? Then I'll teach him how to make girls happy so he'll have more wives in the future."

Bizhu and the wet nurse stood by laughing, while Xie Yuancheng glared at them: "Ying'er, how dare you bring this up? A few days ago, a letter came from the capital, instructing me to bring the prince consort back this time."

"Oh dear, I didn't mean it. It's good for Yu'er to have more wives, so that our Xie family's descendants will prosper. But you can only have me, don't even think about the other wives. If you dare to marry one, I'll kick them all out."

Bizhu and the nanny laughed even harder, and Xie Yuancheng laughed along with them. Only then did I realize what I had been talking about. Honestly, after three years in 2020, I've developed a bit of a scoundrel's air about me.

"Let's go practice our swordsmanship."

During the competition, Xie Yuancheng was still laughing and not practicing seriously.

"Yuancheng, stop laughing, or I'll lose face."

"Alright, Ying'er, we won't practice swordsmanship today. I'll take you horseback riding. Sometimes we can't take a carriage on the way to Sizhou."

"OK."

I want to make up for all the embarrassing things I did in the past. I've been good at riding and archery since I was a child, so these are not problems.

As soon as we left the outskirts, I jumped onto the horse and rode off before Xie Yuancheng could even get there.

"Ying'er, don't do anything reckless."

"Yuancheng, come and chase me!"

He chased after me, so I rode my horse into the nearby woods and played with him.

I dodged a few low trees, but I wasn't familiar with the area, so I just ran wherever I wanted.

But Xie Yuancheng stopped me. He led me off the horse, and we sat under a tree. He started muttering in my ear.

"I know I was wrong, Yuancheng, please stop talking."

"No, if anything happens today, I won't take you with me."

That won't do. I had worked so hard to get him to stop, so I quickly hugged and kissed him, and then I acted all cute and affectionate, and he stopped being angry.

We lay under the tree looking at the leaves, and Xie Yuancheng started nagging again.

"Ying'er, you're a mother now, you can't be as willful as you used to be."

"And Yu'er, if he knew that his mother had abandoned him and left, he would be unhappy."

"My mother-in-law would be unhappy if she knew."

"besides."

"No need for that anymore. I'll stay by your side from now on and won't go out unnecessarily, so please stop nagging me."

"Alright, this place is very close to Bright Moon Valley. I used to go there often with Anshi when I was a child. I'll take you there for a walk."

I quickly got up, took Xie Yuancheng's arm, and acted like a little bird clinging to him.

He led the horse forward, while I leaned against him on the other side, some withered leaves falling from the trees. Although it was very cold, leaning against him made me feel warm, even if I were walking on ice.

"Ying'er, I think you've changed."

"No."

"You like me more now, that's a good thing."

"My lord, you are too sentimental. It's not that I like you more, it's that I've fallen in love with you."

"And another thing, he's become much better at talking than before."

"That's just how I am."

"Alright, whatever Ying'er says goes."

······

I don't know if it's because all my worries have disappeared, but I feel more relaxed and content than ever before.

When I changed back into men's clothing, I looked at the person in the bronze mirror, and it was as if we hadn't seen each other for a long time.

"Yuancheng, come here."

Xie Yuancheng stood up, and I looked at the two of us in the mirror: "I look better."

“My Ying’er is the most beautiful, but why are you dressed as a man again? Even if we leave the day after tomorrow, it won’t matter.”

"How could it not have an impact? Based on my deduction, Li Zhaole ran into a snag in the capital, and I estimate he'll be causing trouble again today."

“Then I’ll hide you away. She was disrespectful to you last time. Luckily, Yu’er and you are both safe.”

I put my hand on his shoulder and gave him a kiss when I heard Consort Ji's voice again. Why does she always have to come at such inopportune times?

"Ying'er, why are you back? My lord, you promised me you would let him go."
