Chapter Sixty-Eight: Bezoar in the Prescription

"Madam Ji really treats a lowly maid like a treasure, just like Consort Ji, she has no taste."

I gripped the dangling tablecloth. Li Zhaole was truly spoiled; although she was a princess, she showed no respect for her elders whatsoever.

"Princess, if the Marquis returns and learns of what happened today, he will likely be displeased."

"You're threatening me." Li Zhaole looked at Lin Chao with disdain, his expression truly worthy of a beating.

"This servant wouldn't dare, but the Marquis's wife is pregnant and cannot speak. I've heard that she rarely goes out from the Ji residence. If she were to have a miscarriage, it would be disastrous."

Li Zhaole flicked his sleeves and left. I had remembered, but my stomach was hurting terribly, and I was sweating profusely.

Bizhu and Wan'er helped me to bed, and Lin Chao left.

"Madam, please don't worry, I will treat you right away."

Bizhu looked at Wan'er with a worried expression. I was writhing in pain, and my clothes were soaked through.

"Has Madam eaten any cold or cooling foods recently?"

"No, all the meals and herbal decoctions were taken according to the doctor's instructions."

"Who is that doctor?"

"He's the most famous in the area, and he's never made a mistake."

I noticed Wan'er was frowning; something seemed wrong. Wan'er took out silver needles from her bosom and inserted them into my arm and wrist, which eased my pain considerably.

"Miss Bizhu, do you know anything about this doctor's background?"

"The doctor was arranged by the Marquis. I heard that he has been in Linyang for a long time and seems to have some acquaintances in the capital who are officials."

"Could I see the prescription written by that doctor?"

Bizhu flipped the prescription in her sleeve and showed it to Wan'er. "We followed this prescription exactly and didn't make any mistakes."

"This doctor may have ulterior motives. Miss Bizhu, you should get him checked more thoroughly."

I gently stroked my belly; even the doctor Xie Yuancheng arranged could make a mistake.

Bizhu's hands started to tremble; young girls are just a bit timid. I reached out and grabbed her hand, then shook my head at her.

"Thank you for reminding us, Miss Wan'er. We will investigate."

"This prescription looks good, but it contains too much bezoar, which is why it's a scam. Bezoar, also known as ox gallstone, is a good thing, but if a pregnant woman uses it, she is prone to miscarriage."

I clenched my fists; I miscarried.

"Madam, please don't worry. Thank you for your help earlier. You and the Prince Consort are truly a family. I have benefited from your kindness. I will do everything I can to ensure that you give birth to a son."

I gratefully took Wan'er's hand and nodded to her.

But I was panicking. When people are in a panic, they tend to overthink things. I even started to think that Xie Yuancheng didn't want the child anymore, which was why he arranged for that kind of doctor.

After they all left, I started to analyze the situation. After this incident, I realized that I couldn't trust anyone. I suddenly miss my mother so much; she was the one who helped stop me from leaving with just a bowl of lotus seed soup.

I leaned against the headboard; my belly is getting bigger and bigger. Normally, I could sneak out without any problem.

"Madam, what are you thinking about? I called you a few times but you didn't respond."

Wan'er came in, and I didn't even notice.

"This is what Madam Ji asked me to bring to you. She said it would cheer you up."

This is a booklet that looks a lot like a comic book. It has some funny little figures drawn on it, and I started to laugh as I looked at it.

"Madam, you are pregnant, you should smile more." I looked into Wan'er's sincere eyes, and perhaps she could believe me.

I pointed to the paper and pen on the opposite table and asked her to bring them over.
