Chapter Twenty-Six: I've Got My Eye on You

Those who understand the times are wise. I spent the whole morning in the study with Xie Yuancheng as he wrote. His characters were so elegant and unrestrained that they didn't recognize me, and I didn't recognize them either.

I learned a new skill: grinding ink!

I added some more water and continued grinding. When it looked almost done, I turned around and glanced at Xie Yuancheng. He was writing with his head down. Looking at his profile, I was stunned.

When I came to my senses, I saw him smiling at me. I felt my face burning and quickly lowered my head to continue grinding the ink.

Xie Yuancheng walked over, in a good mood: "Ying'er, the ink is ready. I'll teach you how to write."

I'd better play ostrich: "No, no need. I can't write anyway, so don't bother."

Xie Yuancheng insisted, and as I held the calligraphy brush in my hand, he put his arm around me and reached out his right hand, saying, "Let me guide you in writing."

How could a grown man have such a pleasant fragrance? The scent was more refreshing than any high-end luxury item.

Xie Yuancheng taught me to write very earnestly, but my heart kept pounding. Looking at the words on the paper, I felt despair. Oh no, had I fallen for him?!

However, I was transported here by soul, and I could leave at any time. So what if I like it?

Xie Yuancheng held me in his arms: "Ying'er, it's okay if you don't like writing, don't be sad." I wasn't sad about writing at all. You cunning Marquis, you can't even guess what's on a young lady's mind.

I leaned against his chest and could hear his heartbeat; I was instantly captivated.

When I went out in the afternoon, I deliberately lowered my head and didn't look at him. Xie Yuancheng thought I was shy, so he sat down next to me and held my hand.

I'm so useless; I actually got completely bewitched by an ancient boy. Do all handsome men have innate charm?

No, I have to go find that shopkeeper!

Xie Yuancheng was a little unhappy: "Ying'er, I'm taking you out of the city for a walk today, what are you going to do at the pawnshop?"

I made up a reason: "I have something very important to discuss with the shopkeeper. You told me what I wanted to do and you didn't stop me. We've only just started dating, and you've already changed your mind."

Xie Yuancheng readily agreed and had Meng Anshi change direction.

As soon as I got off the carriage, I ran to the pawnshop, and there was that same clerk there.

I tapped the counter: "Young man, where is your manager? I need to speak with him urgently."

The waiter was startled again: "Young master, it's you again?"

Xie Yuancheng walked in, and the shop assistant bowed to him, saying, "My lord."

I stared at him, and the waiter sighed, "Young master, our manager has gone on a long trip and he's not here."

Why does this person travel so far? Doesn't he mind the difficult roads?

Xie Yuancheng walked over: "Did your manager leave any instructions before he left?"

The guy thought for a moment, then shook his head. My heart sank.

Just as Xie Yuancheng and I reached the door, the shop assistant ran out: "My lord, I just remembered! The manager said that if I saw you or this young master, I should give this to you. He said it could save lives in case of danger."

I took the box and opened it, and inside was just a medicine bottle, nothing else. My heart sank even further.

Xie Yuancheng thanked the shop assistant, closed the box, and got into the car.

I sat on the cushion, sulking, when Xie Yuancheng handed me the box: "Here, take this. I'll bring you over when the shopkeeper comes back, okay? Don't be angry."

I put the box aside and looked at Xie Yuancheng. "Xie Yuancheng, I've taken a liking to you."

Having mustered the courage to speak, she closed her eyes and forcefully kissed him. Since going back is uncertain now, she might as well pursue a handsome marquis in ancient times. Anyway, he likes Ji Ying so much, so even if she travels back in time, she won't have any regrets!

He was more excited than I was, and I quickly gave in.

I raised my hands in surrender: "Okay, stop."

Xie Yuancheng lowered his head and leaned against my neck: "Ying'er, I will only be good to you from now on." His hands were slender, and holding them felt like holding a piece of exquisite jade. I fell asleep in no time.

Time flies, and I started visiting Li Zhaole every few days. I noticed a clear 100-degree change in her attitude towards me. Could she be heartbroken and desperately looking for another relationship to fill the void?

When I mentioned it to Xie Yuancheng, he arrogantly declared that Li Zhaole couldn't compete with him. Sigh, this guy is both narcissistic and cunning. He really didn't think things through back then; now it's hopeless for him to escape.

Ji Ying married Li Zhaole when she was eighteen, and only half a year has passed since then; she's not even nineteen yet. I'm a little worried about my belly, since pregnancy is inevitable when I'm with Xie Yuancheng.

As I was touching my stomach and pondering the problem, Xie Yuancheng came in and asked worriedly, "Ying'er, is your stomach uncomfortable? I'll go and call the doctor over."

I grabbed his hand: "No, I'm worried, I'm worried."

Xie Yuancheng immediately understood: "Don't worry, things are not stable yet, I won't let you take any risks."

He even thought of this. This person, who is only twenty years old, would be just a college student in modern times who only knows how to play games every day. Yet he is so cunning.

Xie Yuancheng continued, "Ying'er, I had no choice. Although I really want to have a child, now is not the time. This is the only thing I haven't done well, so don't overthink it."

How could I possibly have any wild thoughts? He married me in a grand ceremony right under the noses of the princess and the queen assassins, and he devoted himself to me every day. Even a blockhead would be tempted to have worldly desires.

Besides, I am still Li Zhaole's husband. If I suddenly get pregnant, wouldn't I become a laughing stock?

"Are you silly? I wouldn't overthink it. I just believe you." Xie Yuancheng smiled broadly. When he wasn't arrogant or cunning, he was always gentler than water.

Xie Yuancheng leaned close to my ear and said, "Ying'er, don't wear those musk-scented perfumes anymore. Remember to carry the ones I gave you with you at all times. They will not only cover up your girlishness, but they will also be good for your health."

I touched the purse hanging from my waist: "You mean this? It has a very faint smell, thankfully it's not unpleasant."

Xie Yuancheng lowered his hand and touched the pattern on it: "This is filled with medicinal herbs. We'll throw it away when the time is right. Replace it with a new one every now and then. Wearing musk for too long is bad for you." I nodded. As long as it can cover up the scent, it's fine.

Li Zhaole was about to leave, and Wan'er had been waiting for her in the main hall since early morning. When Bizhu came in to tell me, I hurriedly asked her to help me change into men's clothing. Only after everything was in order did I leave.

Wan'er looked a little anxious: "Young master, the princess is leaving, but she wants to take me and Xiren back with her."

I told her not to rush, that I would handle things in Linyang, and also about Consort Ji.

Wan'er tugged at my sleeve: "Young master, I... I can't bear to part with you." Sigh, yet another person captivated by Ji Ying's face.
