Chapter 3 Survival

After learning everything, Lin Yiran silently pulled her clothes tighter around herself; it was so cold.

Looking at the bright "1" in his personal account, he rubbed his stomach, finally succumbing to hunger, and asked System 101, "Is there anything to eat?"

The system gave a very decisive "No".

"The host needs to find the ingredients himself. I can help you remove toxins for free. The system's purpose is to develop edible interstellar plants and animals to solve the problems of difficulty in obtaining food and limited food variety in interstellar space."

"Ha, your principles are truly noble." The system didn't hide anything from Lin Yiran, even revealing its objectives. It had to be said, it made it sound so easy for Lin Yiran.

It's very difficult!

Think about those mutant plants that are over a meter tall, while you only reach their waist.

If they have waists.

This task is undoubtedly arduous.

However, the most important thing now is survival. Looking at the surrounding environment, Lin Yiran knows that the road ahead will be difficult and arduous.

As the heavy rain pattered down, a pungent, sour stench seeped from the soil, the same smell as the one on Lin Yiran's clothes, but noticeably stronger, and likely to become even stronger.

Because of the heavy rain, layers of thin fog formed in the distance.

[Host, this rain is poisonous, and the gas is also poisonous. You cannot inhale it for long.]

Lin Yiran's eyes widened suddenly: "What do we do then!"

Will she be eliminated right at the start?

[Ding! System-issued gas mask. It can filter out toxic gases and convert them into fresh air. Price: 1 popularity point. Uses: 1. Duration: 3 days.]

Click to select: [Yes/No]

Lin Yiran was speechless. So all they cared about was her one point of popularity?

Buy it! You absolutely must buy it!

Didn't you hear it say the gas is poisonous? Lin Yiran gritted her teeth and chose yes.

[Ding, transaction successful, one point deducted, physical item has been delivered]

What Lin Yiran received was a blue N95 mask, very thin, just a single layer of mask material. Where was the gas mask that was supposed to be there? It was clearly not what was advertised!

Lin Yiran was speechless.

[This is a disguised gas mask, made to the specifications of a standard interstellar face mask. Host, think about it, if you're homeless and wearing a gas mask, wouldn't you attract attention?]

Lin Yiran: "Thank you, what you said makes a lot of sense."

She's starving!

She could only bury her head in her lap and close her eyes to rest. It was too cold outside, and she couldn't sleep.

But in my daze, I heard the system start beeping again.

[Ding, host's blood sugar has reached a critical level. Inject energy?]

Lin Yiran's vision was blurry. Damn it, the rain hadn't stopped yet, and she was already exhausted. But she was injured, so it was normal for her to expend a lot of energy.

[An injection requires one popularity point. Do you want to inject energy? Hint: You can pay on credit.]

"Injection," Lin Yiran mumbled, still half-asleep.

Then a warm current swept through her body, and Lin Yiran regained consciousness.

She slept for an hour without realizing it, but the heavy rain still hadn't stopped.

Why don't we go back to the orphanage and get our things back first?

But Lin Yiran suddenly remembered something.

There's a secret that I have to tell you.

Although it's called an orphanage, most of the children there aren't actually orphans!

Most of the children's parents were people connected to the orphanage, or they were people who worked at the orphanage and had children there, then used the government's welfare program to place their children in the orphanage for upbringing.

God knows how difficult it is to raise children in this wasteland!

So most of the time, this is a last resort, since the nutritional supplements for orphanages are paid for by the state. They are raised for free until they are eighteen years old, when they can read and write and begin taking mental ability tests.

Lin Yiran was found to have no mental strength when she was six years old. In addition, she was a real 'orphan' with no one to protect her, so her situation was extremely difficult.

Fortunately, Ping An grew up to be thirteen years old, but he was beaten up and thrown into a poor slum without any protection because he said that he was the one who belonged to the Lin family.

What about Lin Fei?

She had previously said that she was an 'orphan' like me, but her treatment was obviously much better than mine, and she was fair-skinned and tender, showing no signs of malnutrition.

Could she have family?

This thought startled Lin Yiran, causing her to break out in a cold sweat.

Okay, if that's the case, then the person who beat her was probably doing it on purpose.

Forget it, forget it. Before she has the strength, Lin Yiran should just play it safe. It would be too much of a loss if someone hired someone to kill her.

She cherishes her life and wants to live a good life.

So, three hours later, with the rain still not stopping, Lin Yiran had to buy another point on credit to exchange for some energy, just to make sure she wouldn't die from low blood sugar.

An hour later, the heavy rain stopped, but it was still dark. A thin mist could be seen nearby. Luckily, I was wearing a mask, otherwise, inhaling the mist could have burned my lungs.

After the rain stopped, Lin Yiran was about to get moving.

She planned to go to the landfill first to see if she could find any edible food or metal to sell for money.

The landfill is right next to this abandoned bridge, about 500 meters away. A kilometer further ahead is the slum, a large open space with a cluster of slums built with steel plates, where bustling families live.

On this planet, there are many poor people, who even make up the majority of the population.

Almost no one chooses to live here. Those who live here are the poorest of the poor. They choose to live here because they have no other choice. It is close to the garbage dump, and the stench from the garbage dump every day is harmful to people.

But there is one advantage: it's close to the landfill!

Being close to the water tower gives them an advantage; at least when they dump their garbage there, they can rush to the landfill to find something useful!

Five hours before dawn, Lin Yiran thought she had arrived early enough, but when she got to the garbage dump, there were already several figures bending down to pick up trash.

Lin Yiran looked around and saw that no one paid any attention to her. It seemed that no one would stop her from picking up trash, so Lin Yiran also buried her head and started searching.

Everyone else was wearing gloves and masks, but Lin still didn't have gloves, so he had to take off his coat to cover his hands, and then pull out a steel bar from the garbage heap to use as a tool for rummaging through the trash.

Five hours later, Lin Yiran squatted on the ground, looking at the things she had picked up, lost in thought.

A dagger without a blade, a fist-sized piece of tungsten alloy, and half a nutrient solution that had been opened.

She forced her gaze away from the nutrient solution bottle. Although she was very hungry, she knew that once something had been opened, toxins would inevitably enter, so no matter how hungry she was, she couldn't eat that kind of thing.

If all else fails, she can continue to borrow money from the system; surviving is the most important thing.

That piece of tungsten alloy should be worth some money!
