Chapter 9: White as Snow
Although her daughter-in-law was good at getting food, Mrs. Cui was first concerned about Jiang Zhiluo's health.
"Don't worry about that for now. Come, Zhiluo, wipe off the rain first, drink a bowl of ginger water to get rid of the cold, and go to the inner room to change into clean clothes, so as not to catch a cold."
Jiang Zhiluo nodded without any pretense and waited until everything was cleaned up.
She came out of the house and taught Mrs. Cui how to pick leeks.
She looked outside and saw that it was still raining. She said worriedly, "Mom, I don't know how my husband is doing. Will he get wet in the rain?"
Mrs. Cui said, "It's okay. If it rains, he should be able to borrow an umbrella."
As she spoke, Mrs. Cui couldn't help but look outside. Although she seemed calm, she couldn't help but worry in her heart.
"Mother, how about I go get my husband?"
Mrs. Cui shook her head and said, "It's raining, and we don't have an umbrella at home. It's not worth going out rashly and getting sick."
"Don't worry, He Jin will be fine."
"In the past, when it snowed, he would go to town and come back safe and sound. He would take good care of himself."
In this way, Jiang Zhiluo picked a large bunch of leeks while talking to Mrs. Cui.
Jiang Zhiluo scooped water from the jar to wash the leeks.
Mrs. Cui lit a fire and steamed the white flour buns that she had made earlier.
In the past, Mrs. Cui would never have been willing to use fine white flour to make steamed buns. This was also because He Jin and Zhi Luo had just gotten married, and in the first few days, she wanted to make something as delicious as possible.
There isn't much rice or flour left in this jar.
The mountains were blocked by heavy snow in winter, and we could do nothing but eat and live at home. Even if the mother and son ate frugally, the small jar of food was not enough to last them all.
I hope He Jin can sell that basket of eggs today. If she can sell them successfully, she should be able to buy some coarse grain flour.
Mrs. Cui was thinking about these things while burning firewood, and she looked very worried.
After Jiang Zhiluo washed the leeks, she thought for a moment and said to Old Madam Cui, "Mom, if we want to stir-fry the leeks, we might need a raw egg. Do we have any eggs at home?"
Jiang Zhiluo knew that the eggs at home were sold to exchange for food. To be honest, she felt a little embarrassed to ask Mrs. Cui for raw eggs.
But she wandered around the back mountain for a long time and didn't find any pheasant eggs.
I can only use eggs from home.
If you want to stir-fry leeks without meat, you can only use eggs to make it delicious. She thought about the current situation at home and couldn't beat too many eggs, so she just beat one, at least the stir-fried dish would have that flavor.
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Cui hurriedly said, "Yes, I left two eggs at home. I thought if the chickens in the henhouse don't lay eggs these two days, I can boil the eggs for you to eat."
Even though Mrs. Cui was very frugal, she was still willing to spend money on food for her daughter-in-law.
She thought that if she, as a mother-in-law, treated her daughter-in-law well, like her own daughter, her daughter-in-law would be able to live a peaceful and happy life with her son.
The Cui family is different now than before, and Old Madam Cui also wants to do things as carefully as possible.
When Jiang Zhiluo heard this, her expression changed and she said, "Mom, I thought I'd take one out and use it first."
Madam Cui had no objection. "Zhiluo, you are also a member of the family. You can eat whatever you want and arrange everything at home however you want."
Jiang Zhiluo felt a little touched, "Mom, aren't you afraid that I'll eat it all?"
"Don't be afraid, eat it, and we'll think of a way later." Mrs. Cui now understood that keeping a person healthy is more important than anything else.
Since Mrs. Cui agreed, Jiang Zhiluo beat an egg in a bowl.
To make more eggs.
Jiang Zhiluo added some water and flour and stirred it.
She can make what looks like more egg flowers, so using one egg, it looks like there are two or three eggs.
"Mom, when my husband comes back, we can start cooking."
Just as Jiang Zhiluo said this, she seemed to hear some sound outside the door and turned around to look.
Then, in the misty rain, Cui Hejin walked in slowly, wearing a moon-white robe.
His white clothes were as white as snow, like apricot blossoms and spring rain, and even more ethereal and picturesque.
The wind blew gently, lifting his sleeves and making him seem as if he was about to fly away.
