Tang Jian: "Men! Organize the troops, we're attacking immediately!"
"Yes, General!"
In just a few breaths, a hundred soldiers had already lined up, waiting for Tang Jian's order.
Lin Zao watched this scene from the side and was somewhat amazed by Tang Jian's strict discipline.
Tang Jian's expression was stern. "Abandon all horses and walk up the mountain. If you encounter any refugees, those who surrender will not be killed!"
"yes!"
Five squads of 20 soldiers each split into five groups and quickly disappeared from Lin Zao's sight.
Lin Zao looked at Tang Jian. Now only he and his wife, Sun Ding, and Tian Bu'er remained.
"Should we go up and take a look too?"
With none of his soldiers present, Tang Jian's expression softened considerably.
His eyes were gentle: "If my wife wishes to go up the mountain, I will naturally accompany her even at the cost of my life!"
Lin Zao: "Let's go! Don't waste time."
The two quickened their pace, moving in the same direction in perfect unison.
Sun Ding and Tian Bu'er looked at each other, shrugged, and quickly followed behind the two.
The people Tang Jian brought out were indeed different. When Lin Zao and the others arrived at the mountain, all the refugees knelt on the ground with their heads in their hands.
A hundred soldiers, armed with weapons, separated and guarded these people, and anyone who made any unusual move was to be killed without mercy.
Upon seeing Tang Jian and his group approach, a soldier came before Tang Jian and reported:
"Reporting to the general, a total of 437 refugees have surrendered, while the remaining 98 resisted and have been killed by our subordinates."
Tang Jian nodded to indicate that he understood.
"Is everyone here? Did you notice anything amiss when you came up?"
The soldier replied respectfully, "Except for the dead, everyone we see is here."
"As for what's amiss, a squad of soldiers captured dozens of people under a rock that resembles a longhorn beetle. Those people were digging around the rock. I went to check it out, but I didn't see anything wrong."
Tang Jian's heart skipped a beat, and he guessed that this must be the group of people looking for something.
"Where are those people?"
The soldier pointed to Tang Jian's left front: "Reporting to the general, it's over there."
Tang Jian: "Take us there and have a look!"
After Lin Zao and the others followed the soldier for several hundred meters, they came to a relatively open area where about 50 refugees were kneeling, guarded by 20 soldiers with knives.
Soldier: "General, this is the group. I saw that they were all strong and healthy, and I was afraid they would resist, so I sent more men to guard them."
There were fewer soldiers guarding those who looked emaciated, or who were old, weak, sick, disabled, women, or children.
Tang Jian nodded approvingly: "Well done!"
This group of people is clearly not right; their mental state doesn't resemble that of ordinary refugees.
Upon hearing Tang Jian's praise, the soldier's face showed a hint of excitement. He never expected to be praised by the cold-faced Yama!
He can brag about it to his brothers for a year!
Fortunately, he shamelessly followed the general this time.
The soldier felt smug.
Lin Zao was also looking at the people kneeling on the ground, and saw that although they looked very obedient and did not make any moves.
However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that many people are secretly glancing in one direction.
Lin Zao followed the gazes of those people.
It was a tall, thin man whose face was covered in dirt and whose features were obscured. He was dressed in tattered clothes.
He knelt casually, his head bowed, staring at the ground as if deep in thought, seemingly oblivious to the stares of others.
Lin Zao narrowed her eyes, glanced at Tang Jian, and noticed that he was also looking at the man.
