Ya Ya was so frightened that her eyes filled with tears, and she stood there, too scared to move.
Lin Zao was somewhat surprised that her daughter didn't recognize an eel.
Well, it's probably normal that my daughter is too young and has never seen her before.
"Don't be afraid, Yaya! This isn't a snake! It's a fish. Look, its head is different from a snake's! Snakes have teeth and scales. Eels have smooth skin and yellowish-brown bellies."
Lin Zao slowly explained the difference between snakes and eels to Ya Ya, and only then did Ya Ya believe that what her mother held in her hand was not a snake.
Seeing that Ya Ya was no longer afraid, Lin Zao breathed a sigh of relief. Luckily, she hadn't made her cry!
She threw the eel in her hand onto the shore, and Aunt Ren immediately strung it up with a blade of grass, so she didn't have to worry about it escaping.
Seeing that Ya Ya was happily picking up the snails again, Lin Zao casually glanced to the side.
Suddenly, Lin Zao looked at a spot in the water and her face lit up with surprise.
"crayfish!"
Lin Zao walked over in a few steps and grabbed the head of the waving crayfish.
Wow!
It's not small at all!
Lin Zao stopped calling out to Ya Ya, afraid of scaring her again.
"Aunt Ren, go over there and ask them for a basket. I want to catch more to cook spicy crayfish when I get back!"
Aunt Ren used to live in the city, so she didn't know what crayfish were. She obediently asked for a bamboo basket for Lin Zao.
After discovering a small crayfish, Lin Zao found that there were many crayfish in the mud. It was strange that she hadn't seen any when she wasn't paying attention.
When Ya Ya heard her mother grab something she had never seen before, she looked at Lin Zao with some curiosity.
"Ya Ya, you go ashore first and wait for Mommy to catch some. There are crayfish in the mud, be careful they might pinch you!"
Ya Ya looked at the little monster-like shrimp in Lin Zao's hand, with its two large, scissor-like legs, and quickly ran towards the riverbank, terrified.
After Lin Zao caught a full basket of crayfish, Xiao Bao and Hu Tou started calling for her.
Seeing that she had caught enough, Lin Zao stopped catching them and prepared to go and meet up with the children.
"Auntie, what are these? They're so strange!"
Xiao Bao watched as Aunt Ren and Lin Zao carried a basket of lobsters over, and was curious about what they were. He then saw a basket full of things that looked like lobsters but didn't quite resemble them.
"Ah, it's a multi-legged monster!"
Jiang Fugui suddenly shouted.
"The landlord should dump this place quickly! These multi-legged monsters can pinch people and damage the crops in the fields! They're no good."
Lin Zao looked at him in confusion, "A multi-legged monster? Isn't it a crayfish?"
Jiang Fugui also looked completely bewildered.
"What crayfish? We always call it a multi-legged monster here!"
"Aren't you going to eat this little... multi-legged monster?"
Jiang Fugui shook his head. This was the first time he had ever heard anyone say that they should eat the multi-legged monster. His parents had always told him that the multi-legged monster was a pest and had never said that it was edible.
"Can we eat multi-legged monsters? We've never eaten them before." Besides, multi-legged monsters are all shells, so they probably can't be eaten!
Lin Zao thought about it carefully. These crayfish need to be cooked with a lot of seasoning to taste good. Moreover, only the tail of the crayfish has a little meat, and it looks very strange, so the people here never thought that they could eat it.
"I've had some that was really delicious. If you don't believe me, I'll cook some for you to try!"
The children looked at the multi-legged monsters with some fear. Did they really have to eat them? But they didn't dare refuse their employer!
Even the guards Lin Zao brought looked at each other with some worry. The general's wife was too bold, daring to eat monsters! What would they do if something went wrong?
Apart from Lin Zao and the three children, all the other adults and children were filled with worry.
Lin Zao has been in the ancient city for several months now, and she really misses the taste of crayfish.
He instructed Aunt Ren to set up the pot and then taught several guards how to clean the crayfish and remove the shrimp veins.
Seeing that Lin Zao had explained things in such detail, the guards hesitated again. It should be edible, right?
With so many people, Lin Zao cooked the whole basket of shrimp, dividing it into two pots: one spicy and the other garlicky.
Even before it was taken out of the pot, a powerful and fresh aroma wafted out, along with the fragrance of numbing spiciness and minced garlic, drawing the attention of those gathered around to the crayfish in the pot.
These bright red crayfish look so tempting, they don't look ugly or ferocious at all from before.
I swallowed hard!
When can we eat it?
