Chapter 28: Escaping from the Jungle ~ Thrilling

At the hour of Mao, the villagers set out. They rested for two days and then had to hurry on their journey.

It's still easy to walk now without rain, but what if it rains suddenly? The cold autumn weather plus the rainy season will happen, and if so many old and young people get sick, I can't imagine how it will be even harder for everyone.

After three days of traveling, they finally reached the depths of Xiaoyan Mountain. Near noon, they finally found real water in the canyon!

Liu Yuhan looked at the beautiful waterfall and her mood was instantly healed.

Although the waterfall is not particularly spectacular, it makes people happy when looking at it.

The surrounding trees were lush and green. A few small animals drank from the river flowing down the waterfall, frightened by the strangers and running away. Unknown wildflowers and weeds grew by the stream, swaying in the breeze and carrying a faint fragrance. A few small fish could be seen frolicking freely in the clear stream. The air was cool and comfortable.

Everyone was so stunned by the sight that they were speechless. A moment later, there were roars of ecstasy, and the young men and children ran to the river, splashing water on their faces and playing with each other.

Because they listened to Liu Yuhan's words, they didn't dare to put it in their mouths for fear of getting worms in their stomachs, so they were still very obedient.

The adults looked at this scene, their hearts filled with joy but their eyes were red.

The village chief waved his hand and decided to stay nearby for a day to rest.

Everyone was busy setting up the camp. Not far from the water, they set up more than 10 large pots to boil water. The water in the stream was still a little cold. When the hot water came, everyone washed themselves from head to toe. Everyone was covered in mud!

The women set up thick straw mats and formed a circle, which was used for bathing.

The woman first helped her boy to scrub his body, and the half-grown girls went in behind the curtain one after another to wash, followed by the old man and the woman.

The strong men found it troublesome, so they took the young man and ran to wash far downstream where no one could see them.

After washing, the women let their half-dry hair down and washed clothes by the river.

The old man has already set up the wooden rack, and the strong man and hunter can't sit still, so they have picked up their bows and arrows and machetes and went into the mountains to hunt.

In such a good environment, it would be great if we could hunt some prey and have a good meal!

Women were washing clothes and picking edible wild vegetables, while the two village chiefs were collecting firewood nearby with the elderly and children.

At Liu Daling's house, Li took Liu Yun and Liu Yao to wash clothes. Old Mrs. Jiang took Liu Laizi's mother, Xu, to pick wild vegetables. Aunt Liu washed Liu Laizi's mother's hair, and Xu took care of bathing and dressing herself.

Liu Daling took his grandchildren to collect firewood and picked wild vegetables when they saw them.

Everyone had just taken a bath. In order to prevent typhoid fever, Liu Yuhan and Liu Shi boiled some herbal medicine that could prevent typhoid fever in front of several large pots. After the medicine was boiled, everyone who was called back drank it.

There are six other large pots cooking brown rice and white rice porridge, which are contributed by everyone.

If you have grain, please donate some more. If you have yams, please donate some yams. Let’s cook them and eat them together.

Without telling anyone, Liu Yuhan secretly put a little more rice into each big pot.

In the other three pots, add the chopped yam to make soup. When it's almost cooked, add some wild vegetables, as long as it's edible. Liu Yuhan secretly added more lard, salt, and chicken essence to the three large pots.

The villagers are very frugal with salt, and you can hardly taste any salt in the food.

After it's cooked, leave some extra for the strong men and hunters, and let the women, the elderly and children eat it first.

After eating, he continued to pick wild vegetables and collect firewood. When he saw any yam nearby, he dug it up without stopping for a moment.

Time is precious to them, because apart from traveling and taking necessary rest, they have no more time to spare.

At 3 p.m., the strong man and the hunters came back. It was too late today, so they only dared to wander around. Their harvest was not small. There were many animals nearby, including more than 20 pheasants and a dozen hares.

The strong man and the hunter were so hungry that their stomachs were rumbling.

I took the medicine and porridge. Listen to the village chief and go to the river to kill all the pheasants and rabbits. It's more convenient to pluck the feathers now that we have hot water.

After plucking the hair, they cut all the hair into small pieces and divided them into two large portions. One portion was reserved for cooking tonight, and the other was hung in a bucket of cold water. They were reluctant to use salt and were afraid that the meat would go bad, so they had to hang it in cold water first.

No porridge was cooked in the evening. They had already eaten half full at noon, so the remaining portion was used to cook yam and meat soup, so that each person could drink half a bowl. Food had to be saved.

Wash all the wild vegetables you find and dry them in the sun. They can be kept longer if they are dried.

The broth in the evening was not cooked by Liu Yuhan. Liu Yuhan drank the soup with a slightly fishy smell, but everyone else ate it with relish.

She shared the chicken and soup with Xiaosi and Xiaowu who were enjoying the meal, and ate two pieces of yam herself.

She has never had high requirements for food. She has been living on campus since middle school and mostly eats in the school cafeteria.

After work, the old couple of professors have returned to their hometown, and she rarely spends time cooking. She either makes a bowl of instant noodles or some porridge to fill her stomach.

She feels a sense of accomplishment when she prepares food for her family and sees them satisfied with the food.

Have a good night everyone.

At daybreak, the hunters set out again, their tools in hand. If possible, they would return by noon, and Liu Yuhan and his parents would go with them. Everyone was used to this; after all, Liu Yuhan was a capable man. He could find water, make medicine, save lives, and even cook delicious food. He was also a lucky guy...

Liu Yuhan had no idea that everyone had given her so many labels.

She just wanted to follow him into the mountains to see if she could find something to eat besides yam and wild vegetables.

Everyone doesn't have much food left. Those who brought little food can only last for a few more days if they save it.

The person who brought more food also had his own selfish motives. You can't force him to share it with others; that's unreasonable. After all, he has a family too, and he has to take care of his family first.
