Chapter 4 Family (1)

Liu was holding a child in her left hand and a small cloth bag in her right hand. She walked over briskly. "Xiao Han, wait a moment. I'll make you some rice soup. Xiao Si, go stay with your sister."

After saying that, he walked to the room at the far end, which should be the kitchen. Soon, with the sound of pots and pans in the room, the faint sound of smoke came out from the room.

"Hehe, sister! I have some millet. I'll boil it up and give it to you to drink. Then you won't get sick again." Xiao Si squatted beside her and looked at her and said.

His patched, washed-out clothes were dragging down to his feet, and he wore straw sandals. He had a big head and a skinny body, and at five years old, he looked like a three-year-old. He was severely malnourished!

In her memory, Xiao Si was the original owner's little tail, following her wherever she went. The original owner had a gentle personality. Besides her eldest cousin Liu Yang, she was the oldest and took good care of her brothers and sisters.

The younger ones were very willing to listen to her. Liu Yuhan looked down at the big head next to her, touched it and said, "Xiao Si, don't worry, sister won't get sick again."

"Well, I believe what my sister said. Please don't get sick or bleed. It's so scary. We all cried!"

"Grandpa and grandma went to town today and said they wanted to ask a doctor to treat you. Dad, uncle, eldest brother, second brother, third brother, second sister, and Xiaowu have all gone to the mountains to find food."

"Auntie carried Third Sister to Xiaoshi Village."

"Grandma asked me and Mom to look after you. She said she would bring food and medicine when she came back. You'll get better with the food and medicine..."

Liu Yuhan listened to Xiao Si's chatter and swallowed the questions he was about to ask other people in the family.

Alas, isn't food a worry in a drought year? My whole family was originally hardworking, but we couldn't withstand two years of drought. Not only did we lose every grain, but even the water and plants we depended on for food were becoming increasingly scarce.

What good would it do if the imperial court reduced taxes? What good would it do if they had no grain? Who could save them?

Thinking of my aunt and Liu Yun, I couldn't help but sigh again. Liu Yun was one of the reasons our family had always been poor. Liu Yun had been sickly since birth, and had been living on medicinal herbs and fine grains for years.

It was said that Li had fallen while pregnant, resulting in premature birth and subsequent fertility problems. The baby's voice was as soft as a mosquito's when it was born, and it nearly died. Fortunately, Grandma Jiang acted decisively and took the baby to town to see Dr. Liu, who resuscitated him. After that, they slowly raised the baby, and at eight years old, he was still small and thin.

Seeing that Liu Yuhan was unconscious and the family was struggling to make ends meet, the aunt-in-law shamelessly carried Liu Yun back to her parents' home early this morning.

Li's mother died early, and her father also passed away last year. It can be said that her two younger brothers, Li Dazhu and Li Erzhu, were raised by their sister.

After knowing the truth, the two of them followed their father to do carpentry work. If it were not a year of famine, as long as they worked hard, they could make a decent living.

Life is also tight these days, but their family is small and there are no sick people at home, so their life is relatively better than most people.

Li Dazhu and Li Erzhu married sisters Wang Daya and Wang Erya from the same village at the same time. They got married late and each had a son.

Li shamelessly borrowed two taels of silver from her two younger brothers. When she left, Wang Daya and her sister packed some fine grains and dried vegetables for her. Li accepted them with tears in her eyes.

"Come, Xiaohan, Mom has cooked the rice porridge. It's cooled down a bit now. Drink it quickly."

Liu's voice interrupted Liu Yuhan's reverie.

Liu Yuhan took the bowl and said, "Mom, you and Xiaosi should eat together."

"You can eat on the stove, there's more." Then he took Xiaosi's hand and walked towards the kitchen.

Liu Yuhan drank half a bowl of the yellow and sticky millet porridge in small sips. She was not hungry.

I took the bowl to the kitchen, where a stove had been set up with two large pots and firewood neatly stacked beside them. A wooden rack sat on the edge of the stove, holding dozens of ceramic bowls, some wide-mouthed and some finer, along with several large bowls for vegetables and several large earthenware jars.

Liu Yuhan walked to the door of the stove and saw Liu holding a black and hard-looking vegetable steamed bun in her hand. She broke it into pieces bit by bit and put it into Xiao Si's bowl of rice paste. It was called rice paste, but it was actually just water. Xiao Si drank it happily.

Liu Yuhan deliberately made a noise, "Mom, Xiaosi, I'm full." Then he extended the bowl to them, "There's still some left, would you like to eat?"

Liu looked at the sensible Liu Yuhan and said with a choked voice, "You silly child, you've been unconscious for three days and just woke up. How can you eat this little bit? Eat it all quickly."

"Mom, I can't eat too much because I've been hungry for too long. I'm fine, don't worry."

"Okay then, Xiao Si, this is given to you by your sister, so you eat it." As she said this, she brought the bowl to Xiao Si's mouth.

"Mom will be hungry too, so I'll eat first." He turned his big head to the side and continued to drink from his bowl.

Liu sighed, switched their bowls, and told him to drink it. Xiao Si poured a little more into Liu's bowl and drank it with relish.

"Xiao Han, you're fine now. Go and have some rest. I'll call you when your grandma comes back later."

"Okay, mother."

Liu Yuhan went to the backyard to relieve himself before entering the room.

The backyard is a vegetable patch with cracked soil and only a few stubborn yellow weeds swaying in the wind.

She stepped tremblingly onto the two wooden planks, hoping to get used to it slowly. But if possible, she would still go to the toilet in the space. She felt that the wooden planks under her feet were really unsafe.

During the past three years, we had to harvest crops, so we built two small rooms on the edge of a row of houses. One was a bathroom and toilet, and the other was a small kitchen. However, they were rarely used.

Lying on the bed, I silently browsed the space with my consciousness, and entered the space to carefully classify the things.

She didn't want to move this space easily unless it was absolutely necessary. Not to mention that she was a hard-hearted person. She had just arrived in a strange place and it was related to her life and property, so she had to be cautious.
