The Liu family set up a school and found teachers, and provided free education. This opportunity was first given to the children of Fulai Village. If they didn't want to go, then no one could help them.
Didn't you see that the young man from the Liu family and Yang Nianhua's family had already passed the Tongsheng exam because he could read? They would definitely take the exam to become a scholar. How glorious it would be to be able to do so. Not only would you not have to kneel before officials, but I heard that a scholar could also pay land taxes and not have to pay taxes.
They dared not think about these things. Even if they could not pass the imperial examination to become a scholar, it would be good enough to learn to read and write and then become a shopkeeper in a store.
If a girl is well-educated and well-mannered, will she be more likely to marry? Will she be more respected by her husband's family? In short, the village chief has his own way of doing ideological mobilization.
Liu Yuhan didn't care about these things. It was not easy to force them.
There were just five vacant rooms: two for men's classrooms, two for women's classrooms, and one reserved for the couple to use as a study and bedroom.
After the furniture for the residence was ready, the old man and his team began crafting desks and benches. Liu Yuhan drew a simple design for them: a modern reading table with gridded shelves, with space for books and writing surfaces. Two people sat together, each with a bench. Each class would temporarily have three rows of 21 desks, with a maximum of 42 students per classroom.
After three days of counting, 78 boys were counted in the village and the workshop. There were 48 boys aged 6 to 12, and 30 boys aged 13 to 18. Among them were four boys from four families living in the workshop, and three young men in the boys' dormitory.
There were 88 girls. Thirty-eight were between the ages of 6 and 12, and 50 were between the ages of 13 and 20. Four girls from four families in the workshop were among them. Almost all of the more than ten girls in the girls' dormitory had signed up, including Sun Xiaohua and Sun Shangxiang.
Liu Yuhan was very satisfied with this. They had a strong desire to learn, which was a very good sign.
Stools and tables were arranged in four rooms according to the number of people. There was a podium in each classroom for the two teachers. There was also a wardrobe next to the podium for the teacher to put his books. On the wardrobe was a pack of candles, the teacher's writing brush, ink, paper and inkstone, as well as the purchased Three Character Classic, Thousand Character Classic, and Hundred Family Names.
There is a smooth black wooden board hanging on the wall next to the podium. You can write on the board with a brush dipped in water. Liu Yuhan has not yet developed a white charcoal pencil, and the black charcoal pencil is too dirty, so it is not considered.
Each classroom has four large windows, so the lighting is pretty good.
Liu Yuhan discussed the teaching time with the two teachers and posted the schedule at the gate of the compound.
The adult class is for early morning classes. The adult class is for people aged 13 to 20, who are ready to work in the workshop. Therefore, we arrange early morning classes for them to minimize delays in work.
Morning classes begin at 6:30 AM and end at 8:00 AM. Evening classes begin at 4:30 PM and end at 6:00 PM. Adult classes last three hours a day, so the combination of study and work is naturally quite demanding. The two days off a month are also the teacher's days off.
The Junior Class is for children aged 6 to 12. The morning class starts at 10:00 am and ends at 12:00 pm.
The evening class starts at 2:00 PM and ends at 4:00 PM. The junior class attends school for 4 hours a day.
Children working in the workshop can work two and a half hours before 10 a.m. and another one and a half hours after 4 p.m., so their workday is considered a half-day, and their wages are reduced by half. Adults can adjust their hours to suit their schedules, and there will be no deductions.
This is the only arrangement for now, and we'll see if we need to adjust it later. The freed-up time will be used for the teacher to prepare lessons and grade homework.
The current working hours of the workshop are 7:30-11:30 in the morning and 13-17 in the afternoon. Lunch is at 12:00 noon and dinner is at 6:30 in the afternoon.
Now everyone has an income and money to buy kerosene. The dormitories have stools and desks, so we can review our lessons properly at night.
Taking into consideration that they were beginners, Liu Yuhan told them that it would be best for them to practice calligraphy on a sandbox or stone plate. They should practice writing on the ground first, and then buy pens, ink, paper, and inkstone after they became familiar with it.
