Chapter 168 Heartfelt Intentions

Shen Jing sat in front of the air conditioner fan, hugging her knees, and fell into a brief state of confusion.

None of the disasters that occur around the world today are isolated events.

Blizzards can trigger avalanches and snow accumulation, burying human settlements.

Grain production has decreased or even failed completely.

The floods restricted human travel and escape, providing more avenues for the spread of the zombie virus and turning humanity into desperate, trapped beasts.

Then came the extreme heat...

It will bring plagues and make mutated plants and animals irritable.

Shen Jing couldn't help but tighten her arms and murmured, "Soon those rabid creatures will come to attack the base."

She had mentioned this matter on that crumpled piece of paper.

However, even if the base had known about this news long ago, the current number of superhumans might not be enough to withstand the mutated plants and animals.

Before Shen Jing could recover from her confusion...

She heard the security door in the hallway being banged on again, followed by Huang Simiao's nervous voice coming from outside.

"Jing, Jing? Are you alright?"

When Shen Jing heard her voice, she picked up a portable fan and went out.

The doorknob was incredibly hot; she touched it and immediately pulled away, almost suspecting she had touched a hot plate.

After trying to open the door by wrapping the handle with a towel, Shen Jing walked down the stairs and asked through the security door, "Huang Simiao?"

"It's me! It's me, Jing! The weather has gotten so hot, I'm worried about you."

When Huang Simiao heard Shen Jing's response and knew that she was probably alright, her voice was filled with relief and cheerfulness.

This thoughtful gesture is truly rare, so Shen Jing opened the security door.

Looking at Huang Simiao, who was drenched in sweat, she said, "Let's go inside and talk. It feels hotter outside than a sauna."

Huang Simiao grinned, "Mm!"

Last time, she didn't even have a chance to enter the house, and Huang Simiao thought Shen Jing might be angry.

After all, she came uninvited.

Shen Jing led Huang Simiao into the house, and then went into the bedroom first.

He found a clean piece of clothing in his spatial storage and handed it to Huang Simiao.

Then I saw her cupping her face in her hands, staring at the air conditioner fan with bright eyes. "I heard Zhang Run mention it. Ah Jing, it's so refreshing!"

Zhang Run mentioned it? He shouldn't be the type to tell everyone he meets.

Huang Simiao quickly gave her an answer, "We've decided to go to the city to look for it this afternoon!"

It turns out they were discussing it at a squad meeting.

However, Shen Jing prepared the air conditioner fan before the apocalypse, and she wasn't sure if it was still available in Y City.

"This is the last batch for this store; I don't know about other places."

"It's just a chance, and we need to find some medicine anyway, since many people in the base are probably too weak to handle it..." Huang Simiao took the water Shen Jing handed him and drank it all in one gulp. "If only I had awakened a water-based ability."

Shen Jing thought for a moment and quickly realized, "The base's water supply is insufficient?"

Huang Simiao didn't hide anything and said directly, "Yes, water purifiers can purify water sources, but there's nothing you can do if the source dries up."

This is truly a self-fulfilling prophecy; who knows, we might have to fetch water from City C in the future.

Shen Jing continued, "When do you plan to leave?"

She had originally planned to go out to find Tier 1 crystal cores, but seeing Vassil preparing to advance, it was really frustrating to be holding its breath like that. Besides, it was originally going to skip levels to advance, so the number of crystal cores it needed would only increase, and it couldn't stay stuck in this limbo forever.

The most urgent task is to find the crystal nucleus as soon as possible.

Huang Simiao, imitating Vassi, squatted down in front of the air conditioner fan and replied, "It should be in the last two days; the base hospital is almost full of people."

"Okay, call me when you come." Shen Jing told Huang Simiao to quickly change his sweaty clothes. "Change quickly, you'll easily catch a cold."

"I found that my physical condition has been getting better and better since I awakened my superpowers."

Despite saying that, Huang Simiao obediently changed her clothes immediately.

She smelled the laundry detergent on her clothes. "It smells so good. I feel like I'm going to regress into a caveman. It feels so wonderful to wear clean clothes for the first time since the apocalypse."

"It can't be that bad. Doesn't the base provide subsidies for the teams that go out to find supplies?"

"There is a subsidy, that's true, but my family..."

Huang Simiao stopped halfway through her sentence, feeling that mentioning that she had to support her elderly adoptive parents and her younger siblings who were still in elementary school was a way of playing the victim.

She quickly changed the subject: "My family eats a lot, so we've switched to grains, haha."

Shen Jing had no doubts; she rarely used her special abilities for detection outside of combat these days. Even if she didn't know the truth behind Huang Simiao's claims, Shen Jing understood that everyone had their own difficulties.

Huang Simiao only decided to visit Shen Jing on a whim after learning that the hospital was overcrowded. Now that she knew Shen Jing was alright, she was relieved. "I'll head back now. I need to make some arrangements with the major powers before I go out."

The various forces she referred to were other squads.

Some of them were privately kept and sent out to find supplies, while others were self-organized teams.

But strength comes first!

Those who escape death from the zombies can also find a place in the base.

Although it may lead to disputes when teams go out together, it also ensures the safety of the team.

Therefore, the base plans to organize more people to go out and search for supplies needed in the extreme heat!

"Didn't we go out to look for it before?"

They clearly warned of the extreme heat with a crumpled piece of paper long ago; they couldn't possibly be scrambling to catch up at the last minute.

Huang Simiao sighed, "We have searched, but the medicine is far from enough, and it would be best to find a generator."

The problem of unstable power supply to the base has remained unresolved.

Shen Jing didn't know which link in the chain had gone wrong.
