Chapter 751 The Lion and the Wolves 15
Justice?
What is justice? Is it the sword that executes the sinners in the name of the people, or the sword-bearer who proposes so-called justice in order to attract and guide the anger of the people?
People generally believe that if the majority of people support a certain thing, then that is justice, although they do not have the concept of truth. Of course, as long as it is for the benefit of their own city, tribe or race, then that is justice. Those who are friendly are persecuted, and those who are loyal are killed. They call this justice.
The night sky above is still so clear, with twinkling stars and the pale moonlight. The sky is peaceful, day after day. Even the most brutal war cannot break the order of the night. Under the bright moon is the burning city of Rome. The flames burning in the Eternal City have not changed the color of the moon above at all.
"Where is God? Where is the God we believe in and love so devoutly? Where has he gone? When we need him the most."
In the churches of Rome, people who were tired of praying over and over again finally had to passively accept the fact that the God they trusted and relied on had finally abandoned the Eternal City and chose to stand idly by in the face of such a human tragedy that was so close to them.
They couldn't understand, if the last time was because of the disloyalty of those conspirators, then what was this time? They needed answers, and they were eager to know why. They questioned the priest, but the priest could not answer, and only asked them to continue praying.
But how could the anxious laymen tolerate such meaninglessness any longer? They stood up and asked the priest to invite Pope Leo out and let Leo explain what was going on.
"The Pope is unwilling to show up!"
The priest righteously rejected the citizens' request.
"What kind of will is this?"
The citizens roared loudly and shouted slogans at the same time, hoping that the Pope would appear and explain to them why God did not come. Was it because they were not pious enough or because their sins were too heavy?
Pope Leo had already heard clearly the cries of the citizens below, but he had no time to deal with these idiots who could only pray to God for a miracle.
Although Leo claimed to be the son of God, he at least knew that in times of crisis, the person he could truly rely on was not God but himself.
The priests dressed him up, and he put on the gorgeous clothes that he would only wear on special holidays. He looked out the window. The city of Rome was now full of wailing, roaring and growling.
The flames marked the footsteps of the Vandals as they burned half of Rome and moved closer and closer to the cathedral.
He knew very well in his heart why Luca had come here to meet him before going into battle. Even if they had only stared at each other for a few seconds, Luca must have understood that this was a dead end and there was no way to save it. Even though Augustus was worshipped as a god, and the Roman emperors and generals who had shone with glory throughout the ages, their souls were trapped in white marble statues, permanently fixed in shapes that people believed should be in line with their great identities.
Now they will witness with their own eyes the fall of the Eternal City once again. If Alaric the Visgoth had some reservations and showed some mercy to the Eternal City at that time, then Gaiseric came here to vent his anger completely on this poor city.
The Vandals retreated because of the setback, and the Roman soldiers who had now regained control of the Europa Gate immediately climbed up the city wall and used javelins and arrows to repel the Vandals who were clearing the debris outside.
“Tap, tap, tap…”
The heavy footsteps echoed in the street behind him, and Vokrik turned around quickly, his eyes wide open and his ears pricked up to try to find the source of the footsteps.
But they were everywhere on all sides, which surprised Vokrick. Such heavy footsteps came from all directions, and Vokrick could not feel the specific direction of the footsteps for a while. He just squatted down slowly, stretched out his hand, and slowly approached the ground with his index finger and middle finger, gently touching the trembling earth.
The entire stone slab on the ground was shaking slightly, not to mention the stones on top.
"Damn it!"
Such a strong aura made Wokrick's face change color instantly. He stood up in a hurry, only to see a cavalryman suddenly flash out at the end of the street in front of him, and there were far more than that. Then, the second, the third, and a whole team of cavalrymen instantly filled the street in front of him.
The roar of horse hooves and the roar of soldiers made Wokrick terrified in an instant.
"Damn it, defend! Defend!"
Vokrick hurriedly turned around and called on the frightened soldiers to prepare for defense. At this time, the soldiers who heard the call came running over, holding shields and spears in a panic and crowded around Vokrick.
This is far from enough. All roads lead to Rome, and of course, all streets lead to the Gate of Europa. It is not just the cavalry in front of Vocrick, but the Vandal army is coming from all directions, sweeping along the streets like a flood.
Just as the Romans were trying to gather together and use dense formations to block the charge of the Vandal cavalry.
Vandal cavalry came from all directions, and they used their hard horse armor to break up the chaotic Roman army formation that had not yet had time to gather together.
For a moment, the entire Europa Gate was roaring like a mountain torrent, and countless Roman soldiers were drowned in this unstoppable torrent before they could even utter a single wail.
The Roman army formation was like an unfinished dam, which was instantly surrounded and shattered by the sudden flood, and then swallowed up.

The defenders who had struggled to hold off the infantry could not hold out for even a single round in the face of the Vandal cavalry. They were instantly destroyed and disintegrated until nothing was left.
"Flavius Luca, oh, where is that arrogant Augustus of Rome who has always been associated with victory?" Gaiseric rode slowly towards them, and his unbridled laughter could be heard from a long distance away.
It was not surprising that Vokrick was knocked down by a warhorse in the chaos. After all, no one could resist the charge of a warhorse clad in iron armor. He lay on the ground, holding his shield in front of himself, and constantly waving the iron sword in his hand to scratch the warhorse passing by him.
The frightened horses ran around, disrupting the Vandal formation, but it was useless because the Vandals had already discovered him.
They grabbed Vorrick's armor and pulled him out of the corpse on the ground like a lamb without power to resist, and threw him among the captives.
Gaiseric walked slowly up to his soldiers. The Vandals raised their weapons high and cheered loudly, showing off their power to their king Gaiseric. Look, the Roman army was vulnerable in front of them and they were completely disintegrated!
Of course, such a victory could not make Gaiseric happy. He slowly moved forward, lowered his head through the firelight to look at the corpses on the ground, and finally threw himself into the crowd of captives, locking his eyes on Vokrik.
"Roman Guards!" Gaiseric seemed to have seen the world. He looked at Vokrick's armor covered with blood and mud and said casually, then he dismounted and came to the prisoner.
Perhaps they had never expected that they would be defeated so easily. The shadow of fear left by the Vandals lingered in their hearts. When the captives saw Gaiseric approaching quickly, they were like frightened chicks. They screamed and retreated, casting fearful glances at Gaiseric from time to time.
Only Wokrick was sitting there. He looked very bad, but he was trampled by the horses' hooves, making his limbs weak and unable to do anything.
"You are Flavius Luca's guard!" Gaiseric stood in front of Vokrik and asked in a deep voice: "Tell me, where is your Augustus now!"
