Chapter 87: Siege

Chapter 87: Besieged City

Andrew seemed to be persuaded. He said nothing and listened to Guy quietly. It was rare to see him so patient. Maybe it was because Guy was his superior.

"Okay, you two annoying guys." Chief Centurion Guy waved his hand at the two of us, his tone obviously softened a lot, and said: "You two have wasted too much of my time. I'm going to see what benefits that guy Litorius gave to Aetius, and what their mission today is?" After he finished speaking, he tightened his cloak, coughed twice, and walked forward on the snow.

After all, he is the chief centurion. There is no reason for Andrew and I to disobey his orders. I tightened the fur blanket beside me. Andrew was already wearing very thick clothes and did not need anything else to keep warm.

We came to the place where Andrew and I had come together. The snow and dead leaves along the way made the road very slippery, so the three of us had to support each other and step carefully on the road all the way up.

After stumbling to the top of the hill, I could see the city and walls of Worms, as well as the formation of the Eighth Comrades Legion outside the city.

"Oh, look, this guy, Luca, you really didn't lie to me. It seems that this guy Litorio wants to take a gamble." Guy looked down at the distribution of the Eighth Legion and said thoughtfully.

There were more than 3,000 men in the Eighth Comrades Corps, fully armed and lined up in neat square formations.

"It's really hard to imagine," I murmured, "most of our soldiers are drawn from their legions, why do they still have a full team?"

"Because of the Great Sequanolum." Guy is really a know-it-all. He knows everything you ask him. He went on to say to me, "Octurum, the town north of the Alps, is not far from Ludinan. The Burgundians have their eyes on that treasure land because of its rich iron ore. But there are probably so many Roman soldiers there that even the Burgundians can't count their women. The Empire continuously sends new soldiers there, and all of them are well-trained and fully armed warriors."

"In other words, the mined ore is smelted on site to create armored weapons, and then the soldiers are armed. Next, it is continuously supplied to Ludinan and then Worms along the repaired roads. Am I right?" I asked him.

"Oh, Orius, Luca, you have to know." Guy raised his index finger to indicate that this was very important, and said to me: "The soldiers of the empire are not like those idiots you have seen in the taverns who were deceived by dozens of Denarius. Although they do not have the intensive training of the times of Caesar and Augustus, their Germanic blood at least gives them an innate advantage."

"So, these guys you mentioned are actually rare items?"

"Of course, Luca. There has never been such a chaotic situation since the founding of Rome. You know, we only have half an empire, and we are dealing with bastards who are even more difficult than those Suebi and Celts before."

Maybe it was too cold. A gust of cold wind blew by, and Chief Centurion Guy shivered. He couldn't help but tighten his cloak and complained in a low voice: "Damn it, I should have worn more."

I took off the fur blanket I was wearing and draped it over Guy.

"Oh, thank you, you are so kind?" Guy didn't refuse, but just made a few sarcastic remarks to me. I didn't feel dissatisfied with his sarcasm, because he was used to it. He was used to it, and I was almost used to it too.

The walls of Worms were full of torches and crowded with people. Facing the sudden pressure, the Burgundians must have been caught off guard. The Eighth Legion was like a huge piece of building blocks put together, stepping out a black area on the white land stained by snow, with swords unsheathed and javelins on shoulders, but standing still, quietly waiting for the Burgundians to actively prepare for battle.

The Burgundians were waiting, aiming their bows and arrows at the Eighth Legion, but they did not move. On the hillside in Worms, the catapults were pulled down, and the Burgundians were busy lighting the stones, but the Eighth Legion of Littorius remained unmoved, and they stood quietly in place. I was wondering, why did they not attack, nor retreat, but stand still in that slightly safe position?

"They missed the best opportunity to attack the city. I really don't understand what was going on in Litorio's head. They must have been fooled by the Goths!"

Chief Centurion Guy didn't understand either. He pointed and cursed at the Eighth Legion under the city of Worms. They just stood there, showing themselves to the Burgundians as if they were standing at attention. The armies of both sides stared at each other in silence.

"Are they not cold either?" I was devastated without my blanket. The wind was biting cold early in the morning, and there were dark clouds overhead. It was going to snow again. But as long as the Romans did not leave, the Burgundians would never let down their guard. And Littorio had no intention of leaving.

"Littorius is an idiot. He didn't even bring any ladders or siege spikes for attacking the city. What does he want to do? Pray to God to make the Burgundian wall collapse?" Time passed slowly, and Guy gradually lost his patience. The two sides just stared at each other. If the Romans did not attack, the killing range of the Burgundian bows and arrows would not be enough. It was a pity for the archer. Not only was the bow in his hand taut, but his spirit was also taut. He dared not rest at ease for a moment.

"Maybe, maybe they didn't want to attack the city anyway?" I was almost unconscious from the cold, and I kept backing down in my heart. I wanted to beg Guy to tell him to go back, but everyone knew Guy's temper, and I was afraid that if I said that, he would kick me off the mountain.

"Oh, that makes sense!" Guy nodded repeatedly, just nodding repeatedly, squatting there as if nothing had happened. He was covered with a fur blanket outside and a cloak inside. It was really warm. I regretted my compassion at the time. I should have let this damn thing freeze. As long as this thing doesn't speak, no one can leave! "No! This Littorio must have some tricks!"

Oh! It's this Guy again. My tears froze. Guy was full of energy again. I don't know what he discovered, but he stood up.

However, the picture style has not changed at all. The more than 3,000 people of the Eighth Comrades Corps are still motionless, and no orders are given because the trumpets are silent.

"Littorio, this bastard!" I sniffed the snot that was about to flow into my mouth, and cursed Littorio secretly in my heart, "This bastard doesn't consider his soldiers at all. It's so cold, and there's this guy!"

“A-choo!”

The latest novel is published first on Liu9shuba!

I sneezed loudly! Fortunately, it was far away, and it seemed that no one in the distant Littorio Legion heard it, otherwise it would be troublesome.

"Damn it! What are you doing!" They didn't hear it, but Guy was frightened. He quickly leaned over and glared at me.

"Sorry, sorry." I apologized repeatedly. Guy didn't say anything, just glared at me and continued to watch the Eighth Legion's every move.

At noon, a horn finally sounded in the sky, but the tune did not sound like an attack. More than 3,000 soldiers of the Eighth Legion turned around and walked towards the camp.

"What, what?" Guy was stunned! He stammered, "Is everything, okay?"

"It's okay, it's okay!" I was really freezing to death!
