Chapter 15: The Inspector Encounters a Ghost
The female reporter looked at his forehead, where the veins were bulging, and opened her mouth.
They had inquired beforehand and found out that the last person who wanted the whole building to know that the master was a fraud was now lying in the hospital with her husband.
Seeing how agitated he was, the female reporter didn't provoke him further.
With concern, she asked, "Do you need me to bring a few colleagues to accompany you home?"
"You also think my wife is cheating on me?" the male reporter asked through gritted teeth.
"No, no," the female reporter quickly explained, "Everyone in our newspaper knows that you and your wife have a good relationship! I just felt that we haven't gotten together in a long time, and the food stall downstairs from your house is delicious. I was thinking of going there to get together."
The male colleague's expression softened. "Forget it, I'm not in the mood today. Let's do it tomorrow."
He clenched his fist. "Wait till I take my wife to meet that swindler, and we'll turn his place upside down. Then I'll treat you all to dinner!"
Female reporter: "..."
Seeing her male colleague's eager expression, she sighed silently and didn't try to persuade him further.
While waiting for her male colleague to take the public bus home, she stood by the bus stop and thought for a moment before calling her colleagues over.
Her male colleague is her good partner. The two have worked together since they were newcomers, and she doesn't want to see anything happen to her partner.
If his wife's affair is a lie, she'll just treat it as an invitation to her colleagues to eat at a street food stall.
If his wife really cheated on him and planned to conspire with her lover to kill him, she might still be able to save his life.
-
The male reporter was on the bus home, and the more he thought about it, the angrier he became.
Besides being angry at that charlatan, he was also angry at himself.
Looking at her arms, which weren't particularly thick, she secretly made up her mind.
He'll start exercising tomorrow, otherwise he won't be able to fight back if anyone speaks ill of his wife!
If he hadn't been so curious and insisted on figuring out the baby's gender, his wife wouldn't have been humiliated... Feeling ashamed towards his wife, he went downstairs to the store and bought her favorite foods.
When he got home, his wife didn't rush to him as usual.
"Wife?"
He thought his wife was sleeping and planned to go to the bedroom to wake her up.
Before he even reached the bedroom, he heard the sounds of flesh and bodies colliding and hitting each other.
"..."
In an instant, like a bolt from the blue, his head was buzzing.
The sounds of intoxication drifted through the bedroom door, along with his wife's sticky moans and the man's voice.
Man: "Your husband's almost off work, right? We need to hurry."
"What's the rush?" his wife snorted sweetly. "He usually gets off work very late, and he'll probably be working overtime again today. Besides, we're going to kill him anyway, what are we afraid of?"
The male reporter couldn't hear the subsequent vulgarities.
He felt all the blood rushing to his head, causing his ears to ring incessantly.
By the time he realized what was happening, he was already standing at the bedroom door with a kitchen knife in his hand, while the commotion inside the bedroom continued.
"Damn it! You two adulterers!"
He kicked open the door, wielding a kitchen knife, his eyes bloodshot.
"I'll chop you two bastards up!"
When she saw him rush in with a kitchen knife, his wife let out a sharp scream and rolled off the bed without even putting on her clothes.
But the male reporter didn't aim the knife at his wife; instead, he slashed at the adulterer.
To his surprise, the adulterer turned out to be his childhood friend.
"You bastard! I treated you like a brother, and you slept with my wife behind my back!"
He swung the cleaver, but his brother dodged it.
Seeing his bloodthirsty look, the brother got scared and quickly explained, "No! No, brother! Let me explain!"
"Damn it, you've already taken your pants off, what are you still explaining!"
Seeing that the adulterous couple were not even wearing pants and still dared to argue, the male reporter became even angrier.
"You bastard, I'll kill you today!"
Compared to the frail male reporter, his brother was a gangster who had no other skills but was decent at fighting.
The two men, one unarmed and the other with a knife, chased the male reporter around the house again and again, but the male reporter still couldn't manage to cut him.
Having finally cornered the adulterer with nowhere to retreat, just as he was about to deliver the fatal blow, his beloved wife suddenly smacked him on the back of the head with an ashtray.
With a "thud," the male reporter's vision went black, and the kitchen knife in his hand was snatched away.
He turned his head and looked at his wife in disbelief.
My wife, holding her already showing belly, took two steps back, covered her face, and started to cry.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, my husband! I'm pregnant with his child, I can't let the child be born without a father... I'm so sorry..."
The male reporter stared blankly at his wife, moved his lips, and suddenly felt a knife slash his shoulder.
"Damn it! You're just a weakling, and you dare to hit me!"
The brother who had snatched his cleaver changed his earlier passive stance, slashing at him several times before kicking him to the ground.
Seeing him fall to the ground, his brother came up with a knife, stepped on his hand, and secretly exerted force.
"You call yourself my childhood best brother? If it weren't for your family's wealth and the chance to get some good food by hanging out with you, do you think your wife and I would have even been interested in you?"
"If it weren't for your money, your wife and I would have been married long ago. You good-for-nothing would never have a chance!"
Seeing that he was rambling on and on, his wife shoved her lover away, saying, "Stop talking nonsense and hurry up! Kill him, and I can inherit his wealth. Why would we be afraid of our son being poor again after he's born!"
The male reporter stared at the two men in shock, as if he were seeing them for the first time.
These two were his best playmates during his childhood, occupying most of his life.
But over the years, he still couldn't tell whether the people around him were human or ghosts.
"I know, I know," the adulterer raised his arm high, "Useless thing, your wife's pressuring me, so I'm not giving you time to write your last words. Don't blame me, it's your wife's fault for being in such a hurry!"
The cleaver in his hand came down hard, and the male reporter could even feel the wind that the cleaver created as it cut through the air.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
The knife stopped abruptly; the wife and her lover were nearly scared out of their wits.
The adulterer shoved the male reporter's wife, saying, "Go ask her what's going on."
His wife cried and backed away, "I don't dare..."
"You don't dare? Bring the police here, and believe me, I'll chop you to death with a kitchen knife right now!"
Meeting the adulterer's menacing gaze, the wife sobbed twice before being forced to the doorway by someone wielding a kitchen knife.
She didn't dare open the door, but just asked through it, "Who is it?"
A strange male voice called from outside the door, "Hello, are you here to check the gas pipes?"
"Inspect the gas pipeline?"
The wife and her lover exchanged a glance, and she couldn't help but feel angry.
Why did they have to inspect the pipes at this particular time of year?!
But neither of them noticed that the male reporter, who was lying on the ground waiting to die, suddenly brightened up.
His partner must have been worried about him, so he asked a colleague to come and check on him!
The adulterer shook his head at his wife, who then forced herself to speak, "I'm not available right now. Come back tomorrow!"
After a moment of silence outside, the prosecutor's voice grew impatient.
"Please, what are you doing?! We have to check each house one by one. If you're home, just open the door! Don't cause me any more trouble, okay?"
He changed the subject abruptly, "Are you in some kind of danger? Do you need me to call the police?"
Upon hearing the words "call the police," the male reporter's wife panicked.
"No need, no need to call the police, I'm not in danger."
The person outside became rude again, saying, "If there's nothing wrong, just open the door! Don't interrupt my work!"
"I really can't..." The male reporter's wife was frantic with worry.
In the end, the prosecutor outside the door took the first step back. "How about this, open the door, I'll give you the inspection form, you sign it, is that alright?"
The male reporter's wife turned around and saw her lover nod behind her. She replied in a trembling voice, "Okay, give me the form."
She opened the door a crack, and a notebook clipped to her door was handed to her from outside.
Just as he was about to take it, a sudden, tremendous force caused the door to be kicked open from the outside.
She and her lover were thrown into the air and landed on the ground, unable to get up for a long time.
"I told you so, that fortune teller was right! Ryan's wife really is planning to kill him with her lover!"
The female reporter was the first to enter. She casually dragged the male reporter lying on the ground to her side, leaving a deep bloodstain on the ground.
Seeing that the male reporter was still alive, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Don't go and cause trouble at their stall tomorrow. Go and thank the master properly!"
The male reporter, having survived the ordeal, burst into tears and nodded through his tears.
Seeing that his crime of murder had been exposed, the adulterer grabbed a kitchen knife and tried to run away, but armed police had already arrived.
Seeing that he still wanted to use the gun to hurt people, he fired a shot without hesitation.
"Don't move! Drop your weapons, or we'll shoot!"
After a brief riot lasting only a few minutes, the adulterer was quickly subdued.
The male reporter's wife was also handcuffed and cried and begged for mercy as she passed by him.
"Old man, please save me! Please save me! I was forced into this, he forced me to do it all! I love you so much, if he hadn't forced me, how could I have treated you like this!"
"I was forced into this! I'm pregnant with your child, please save me!"
The wound on the back of his head was still bleeding, but his wife's ashtray had snapped him out of his romantic obsession.
The male reporter closed his eyes and let the police take the adulterous couple away.
The ambulance arrived quickly, and the female reporter and her colleagues took the male reporter to the hospital.
It wasn't until they were in the ambulance that the group realized what had happened.
"Who among you is so clever as to think of calling the police!"
"Huh? Didn't you call the police?"
“How could it be me! I wasn’t even sure Ryan’s wife wanted to kill him when I arrived, how could I have called the police beforehand? It would be so embarrassing if I made a mistake!”
"That's what I thought too, so who called the police?"
Chu Ci sneezed while eating dinner.
After finishing her meal and lying in bed, she flipped through the "Quick Guide to Fortune Telling" she had just received. After a while, she managed to read the first page, and she roughly understood her abilities.
Her ability to see fragments of images flash through her mind when she looks into people's eyes is called "commonality," which allows her to see people's past and future.
But now it can be used a maximum of three times a day, and it cannot be used on the same person.
Once you've learned the later parts of this book and practiced more, you might be able to see more fragments in the same person.
After finishing the first page, Chu Ci felt her vision blur and her head spin when she tried to read the second page; no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't concentrate.
Thinking that it was probably due to the limitations of this "Speedrun Manual," she could only put down the book and climb into bed to sleep.
She probably overworked her brain, because she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
She was sleeping soundly here, unaware that the police station's major crimes unit was encountering a ghost.
-
The case of the five-faced female corpse has not yet been solved, and now another case of the murder of a Cheng family granddaughter has emerged. Ji Jingtong and Shen Xiuhe, the first and second leaders of the major crime squad, are going crazy with work.
The two men were given a severe scolding by the police chief, who ordered them to solve the case within three days and give the people of Hong Kong an explanation as soon as possible.
The two of them were inwardly groaning.
We have no clues at all, and we have to solve the case within three days. Isn't that a death sentence?
But they had no choice but to obey their superiors.
With limited time, they had to work overtime at the police station, trying to find some clues from the existing information.
Ji Jingtong knew a little about autopsy methods, so he took the initiative to go to the morgue.
Shen Xiuhe followed closely behind, and when he saw him looking over, he glared at him fiercely, "It's still uncertain who will become the head of the Major Crimes Unit! Don't even think about getting rid of me and investigating the case on my own!"
Ji Jingtong was already used to his personality and put on gloves first, saying, "Since you want to come, then come. I can lend a hand."
The morgue was on the first floor. The two people took the elevator down, but the elevator malfunctioned.
The doors opened and closed repeatedly, but no matter how many buttons they pressed, the elevator remained stuck on their floor.
"Let's call a repairman to fix it tomorrow, then we'll take the stairs."
The stairwell lights weren't on, and to make matters worse, both of their flashlights broke at the same time.
"Tsk!" Shen Xiuhe frowned deeply. "What happened? Both flashlights are broken!"
"Never mind," Ji Jingtong said, patting the flashlight but it still wouldn't light up. "Watch your step, there aren't many steps, let's just go down like this."
That's what they said, but the two of them walked up the stairs for a full five minutes and still couldn't get to the first floor.
Passing by the second floor marked with "2" again, even though the two men were police officers, they couldn't help but feel a chill down their spines.
Shen Xiu's voice trembled as he asked, "How many times... how many times have we passed the second floor?"
“…This is the 16th time.” Ji Jingtong pursed his lips tightly.
The journey from the third floor to the first floor originally only required climbing four flights of stairs, taking a maximum of ten seconds.
But no matter whether they went up or down, they always ended up on the second floor.
It's exactly like the ghost wall scene depicted in TV dramas.
The two stood on the stairs in the darkness, surrounded by silence, with only their heartbeats growing louder.
“Staying here isn’t a solution either.” Shen Xiuhe was getting irritated by the strange situation. “Let’s try a few more times. If it doesn’t work, you’ll have to call me brother.”
"Your brother?"
"Tell my brother to send someone to rescue us!"
He was the first to lift his foot, followed closely by Ji Jingtong.
After climbing the stairs twice more, the situation finally changed.
Just as they turned the corner and were about to go down the steps, a little girl in a pink dress appeared on the steps.
The little girl sat on the steps with her back to them, quiet and motionless.
Upon seeing that familiar dress, their minds went blank.
They looked at each other and saw fear in each other's eyes.
Cheng's granddaughter was wearing this dress when she died!
Adding to the fact that they just experienced being trapped in a maze...
Their hearts were pounding so hard they were almost bursting their eardrums.
After a brief shock, Ji Jingtong raised a finger to his lips, signaling Shen Xiuhe to keep quiet.
Just as they were about to quietly return the way they came, the little girl sitting on the steps suddenly spoke up.
"Uncle, have you seen my hair clip?"
