Chapter 17: After the founding of the country, no spirits are allowed
A tree that was probably only as tall as Lin Jin's calf, with a few piles of dry leaves on its top and two teapot handles hanging by its ears, and a tree trunk with uneven facial features appeared in front of him.
Lin Jin's pupils shrank. What is this?
The facial features of the human-faced tree root were distorted, and the roots under its body were growing panickily. Two roots were dragging behind it, and it was stumbling and turning around.
One of the roots was dripping with red juice, and another root was wrapped with something that looked like a light bulb.
The light bulb was on, casting a shadow on the tree roots in the gray sky.
Lin Jin looked up and saw a shadow cast on the other side in the fog that had not yet dissipated. The strange figure just now was its work.
A few faint cries came from the tree roots, but the moment it approached Lin Jin, all the sounds stopped abruptly.
The tree roots, which were running around in a panic, seemed to have found their end. Without eyes, they stared straight at Lin Jin's location.
In an instant, the human-faced tree root seemed to have found its target, and the corners of its twisted mouth curved into an unnatural smile.
The grass nest on his head shook, and a pile of dry leaves fell down. Then the sound came from the tree again, but this time it was no longer a baby crying, but a sharp laugh.
“Ga ga ga ga~”
The branches behind the tree roots rose high and then fell heavily, hitting the ground with a bang, causing the ground to crack three-quarters and causing dust to fly.
The body of the human-faced tree root tilted, and a few unclear syllables came out of its body, barely able to piece together a few words.
"I found you."
“Pah!”
As soon as he finished speaking, an iron rod fell from the sky and hit the root of the human-faced tree.
Its crooked body trembled, and the rolled-up light bulb was blown far away.
Lin Jin's face turned grim as she continued to hit with the iron rod, which made a banging sound.
"Don't you know that after the founding of the country, spirits are not allowed?"
Her hands kept moving, and she hit the tree several times in succession, sometimes hitting the side of the tree horizontally, and sometimes hitting it from above the head.
Until finally she kicked it, and with a snap, she stepped on the roots of the human-faced tree under her feet.
Red juice immediately overflowed from under Lin Jin's feet. Unlike the beginning, this time the juice was a darker red.
The roots of the human-faced tree were thrown into disarray by Lin Jin's tyranny. They only had time to scream twice before being trampled to the ground and their trunks cut off.
Lin Jin took a knife and cut off the branches at the root of the human-faced tree. The branches under her body broke and the grass nest on her head was flattened.
She took out an axe from the space, placed the round surface of the tree root on the ground, lifted it high and dropped it heavily.
"Bang!"
The tree root was split into four pieces, and fell to the ground motionlessly.
After waiting for a while and seeing that the tree roots had no response and the body was deader than dead, Lin Jin breathed a sigh of relief and stopped.
The sky shrouded in haze cleared up, and the forest slowly revealed its original appearance.
Faint voices could be heard from behind, and sirens could be heard at the foot of the mountain.
Lin Jin covered her arms which were covered with goose bumps and touched her back which was completely soaked with cold sweat.
The scene became clear and she could see what was going on.
The red juice that dripped from the roots of the human-faced tree dyed most of the soil red, turning the soil reddish-brown, and a faint smell of blood came to the tip of the nose.
The middle of the tree trunk that was split into four pieces is not a solid trunk, but a relatively empty light green heart.
Lin Jin bent down and picked up the thumb-sized piece of tree core. Just as she was wondering what it was, she suddenly felt a chill in her chest.
It was like a drizzle of sweet rain falling from the sky, entering her heart and lungs to nourish her lungs, and then a cool breeze came and soothed her blood vessels that had contracted violently due to exercise.
Lin Jin calmed down, looking at the iron rod in her hand stained with red juice, and suddenly realized what she had just done.
A monster that looked very much like a human appeared, and she beat it to death with several sticks, and finally even chopped it up with an axe.
She looked down at the palm of her hand, and when she felt herself calm, the tree heart disappeared.
The only trace that proves its existence is a trace of residual moisture in the palm of the hand.
Lin Jin wiped the sweat off her forehead.
It can walk and talk, has distorted facial features, and can even bleed!
This scene looks so familiar, a monster turning into a spirit?
"The fog has cleared. I have a signal here. How about you?"
A few rough voices were heard not far away. Lin Jin concealed her thoughts and climbed up a tree. She looked into the distance and saw the crew members not far ahead.
Everyone was only a few dozen meters away from her. Everyone was panicked and hurriedly called the police with their cell phones.
Lin Jin clearly felt like she had been walking in the woods for more than half an hour, but now at a glance she realized that she had been walking in circles.
Lin Jin sat on the tree and looked down. The tree roots on the ground were no longer recognizable, with no core, and the trunk was drying up at a speed visible to the naked eye.
His sight turned again, and he heard footsteps not far to the left. The footsteps were not those of the crew members in a panic, but were steady, powerful and fast.
"I heard some noises. They are probably ahead."
"Group A, advance at full speed, Group B, on alert."
A large group of people came. Lin Jin's eyes flashed slightly. She jumped off the tree trunk to smooth out the traces she left behind, then flashed into the space and ran away.
Not long after she left, strands of white silk appeared on the surface of the shattered roots of the human-faced tree.
Several white threads floated up, connecting the tree and the body scattered on the ground. In an instant, the tree root returned to its original state under the action of the white threads.
The only difference was that the roots of the human-faced tree had lost their vitality and lay stiffly on the ground, unable to move. The facial features had lost their clarity and the skin was so dry and cracked that it seemed like it would break at the touch.
......
Shen Lingyu led his men through the woods, and halfway through they suddenly felt the fog in the sky dissipate.
Their vision became clear and they could see things around them clearly.
The group of people were startled, thinking that they had entered the lair of the human-faced tree, but the next second everyone heard a loud noise.
Someone picked up a telescope and saw that the target they were looking for was not far ahead.
A large group of people were confused. What was going on?
Did the monster run away? Or is there a trap ahead?
Shen Lingyu's heart sank. It was confirmed that the smog was caused by the roots of the human-faced tree. Now that the smog had dissipated, she didn't know whether it had gone away or something bad had happened.
This won't do. If the human-faced tree root runs away, we don't know where to find it. If it enters the city and causes panic, that would be terrible.
Shen Lingyu quickly took off his night vision goggles, calmly judged and gave orders, “Don’t panic, we will move forward according to the original plan.”
"The roots of the man-faced tree may be hidden in the woods. Please observe your surroundings carefully."
Shen Lingyu looked down at the ground. There were a few drops of red liquid in the soil. She followed this clue and continued to lead people forward.
After walking about a few hundred meters, Shen Lingyu suddenly stopped.
The people behind her were on emergency alert, pointing their guns in front of her.
But Shen Lingyu raised her hand and waved, signaling everyone to put away the wood. She put the half-drawn sword back into the scabbard, slowly squatted down and picked up a dry branch.
