Chapter 148: Change of Attitude
Wang Xinxin's voice was instantly filled with anxiety, and she took half a step forward.
His eyes quickly swept over Chen Zhengnian, finally landing on his arm wrapped in gauze.
The sunlight slanted in through the window, casting a small shadow on her slightly furrowed brow.
The nervous look made several comrades watching nearby couldn't help but laugh in their hearts.
Chen Zhengnian looked at her red eyes and his Adam's apple rolled.
Just as he was about to expose his comrade's lies, he was interrupted by a cough from behind.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his comrade winking at him and secretly making gestures of cooperation with his hands.
Chen Zhengnian frowned slightly and wanted to refuse, but for some unknown reason, he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue and continued walking down the stairs.
"It's nothing serious, just a little scrape on my arm."
"A scrape requires seven or eight days of hospitalization?"
Wang Xinxin obviously didn't believe it. She reached out to touch the gauze, but when her fingertips were about to touch it, she suddenly pulled it back, as if she was afraid of hurting him.
Why is she so nervous? She has nothing to do with Chen Zhengnian.
Wang Xinxin, did you get kicked in the head by a donkey?
In order to cover up the embarrassment of the moment, Wang Xinxin could only make up for it with other words.
"Did you injure a bone? I heard from my cousin that during training, you often get bone fractures hidden beneath the skin injuries..."
She chattered on and on about the medical knowledge she had heard from Su Tang.
Chen Zhengnian looked at her serious profile and suddenly felt that his comrade's casual lie was not so bad.
He raised his hand to rub the back of his neck, his voice lower than usual.
"It's really okay. They were just teasing you. The doctor said I can leave after my wounds are treated, but my comrades thought it was a rare opportunity to rest and wanted me to stay a few more days."
Hearing Chen Zhengnian's words, Wang Xinxin's eyes immediately widened and she turned to look at the comrades who were trying to hold back their laughter.
"How can you joke about something like this? What if something serious happens and it's delayed?"
She looked a little fierce when she was lecturing people, but the worry in her eyes could not be hidden, which made her look particularly cute.
Her comrades looked at each other in confusion at her question, and in the end, it was the soldier who had started the commotion who scratched his head and laughed.
"We just want to let Chen Lu rest a little longer. Look how hard he trains. Besides, you've made it all the way here, you can't just watch him leave right after you arrive, right?"
These words seemed to have touched upon the little girl's secret thoughts, and Wang Xinxin's cheeks suddenly turned red.
She turned her head to look at the green ivy on the windowsill, her voice as soft as a mosquito's hum: "I... I just came by to take a look, it doesn't matter whether I go with him or not."
Chen Zhengnian looked at her red ears and couldn't help but curl up the corners of his mouth.
He cleared his throat, put on a deliberately stern face, and said to his comrades, "Nothing to do? Don't you need to go back to training?"
As soon as these words were spoken, the onlookers immediately scattered like birds and beasts, and before leaving, they did not forget to give Chen Zhengnian a gesture of encouragement.
The ward suddenly became quiet, with only the ticking sound of the wall clock remaining.
Wang Xinxin then remembered what she had brought and quickly pushed the net bag on the table forward: "This is my pickled cucumbers and the corn cakes I steamed yesterday. If you don't mind..."
"I don't mind."
Chen Zhengnian picked up a corn tortilla. The warm touch from his fingertips, mixed with the faint aroma of corn, made him feel inexplicably warm in his heart.
He took a small bite and looked at Wang Xinxin who was nervously clutching the corner of her clothes. He suddenly felt that this unexpected injury might be something to be thankful for.
Wang Xinxin stayed here for a while and was about to leave.
Chen Zhengnian wanted to say something to keep her, but he didn't know what to say.
I could only watch Wang Xinxin walk away.
He probably had no interest in Wang Xinxin, so why did he feel a secret joy in his heart when he saw her just now?
Wang Xinxin was in a good mood and hummed a song as she went home. As soon as she got home, she saw Lu Xiao and Su Tang sitting there.
My cousin was peeling an apple and my cousin's wife was reading a book.
These two people didn't go back to their room, but were in the living room. Could they be waiting for her?
"Xinxin is back? Come, sit down."
Su Tang smiled and asked Wang Xinxin to sit down. Wang Xinxin didn't understand why and always felt a bad premonition.
But she couldn't say anything, so she had to sit down.
"Cousin, cousin, what's wrong?"
As soon as the words fell, Lu Xiao snorted coldly: "What's going on between you and that Chen Zhengnian?"
As soon as these words came out, Wang Xinxin's cheeks turned red enough to bleed. "Cousin, what nonsense are you talking about! Brigade Commander Chen and I are just... just ordinary friends!"
"Ordinary friends?"
Lu Xiao put the peeled apple in Su Tang's hand.
"Would an ordinary friend make you run all the way in the morning with pickled cucumbers in your pocket? Would an ordinary friend make you smile foolishly at their photo for half the night?"
Wang Xinxin's eyes widened instantly. Damn it, how come her cousin even knew this!
Su Tang coughed twice and quietly kicked Lu Xiao's ankle: "As a cousin, how dare you rummage through a little girl's things?"
Lu Xiao touched his nose angrily, but his tone did not soften.
"I'm her cousin. If I don't take care of her, who will? Besides, who went through her things? She didn't put them away herself and just left them on the table. I saw it."
"Chen Zheng is eight years older than her, and he's a tough guy. How could he understand how to be caring?"
"Brigade Commander Chen..."
Wang Xinxin wanted to defend him but didn't know where to start.
Does she like him?
Maybe the answer is already there, but she just doesn't admit it.
But there is a huge difference between her and Chen Zhengnian, both in age and status. Is there really any possibility between them?
Su Tang took Wang Xinxin's hand and soothed her somewhat uneasy heart with gentle words.
"Xinxin, tell your cousin's wife the truth, are you interested in her?"
Her voice was as light as a feather: "I just think... he is very good."
This admission almost made Lu Xiao stand up.
Su Tang smiled and cut the apple into small pieces with a fruit knife: "Don't worry, wait until you see through your own heart."
"Things like feelings can't be forced."
Wang Xinxin's eyes lit up, like falling stars: "Really?"
"Why would I lie to you?"
Su Tang pushed the fruit plate over and said, "But your cousin is right to worry. Discipline is strict in the army. If you are really interested, you have to take it slow."
She didn't think it was a big deal. Apart from the Chen Man incident, Chen Zhengnian himself was in very good condition.
But what she was worried about was whether Wang Xinxin would not get along with Chen Zhengnian's family.
Everyone says that Chen Zhengnian has very good conditions.
Plus there is Chen Man, how can she let it go?
These are all things that Wang Xinxin will have to face in the future. No matter what, as her brother and sister-in-law, they can only help her up to this point.
If she really chooses Chen Zhengnian, every step she takes in the future will be her choice.
