Dark at night
Lin Luo clutched his clothes tightly, not because she was worried about his safety, but on the contrary, she felt particularly safe with Fu Xingchuan by her side.
Arriving at the hospital, Lin Luo hurried to the operating room door. Du Yunyan paced back and forth, fidgeting uncomfortably. Seeing her approach, she feigned composure. "It's just a minor operation. What are you doing here?"
How could it be a minor surgery? She ran over from the lobby. The emergency room was packed with car accident patients waiting for treatment, and there were not enough doctors.
When she was asking for directions at the nurse's station, she heard someone say that there was a six-car pileup on a road section, resulting in three deaths and two serious injuries on the spot. The car lost control and crashed into the intersection, causing many more injuries.
Lin Luo knew Du Yunyan was trying to comfort her. She stared at the red light in the operating room, the bloody scene she had just seen flashing through her mind. Her eyes welled up, but Du Yunyan was there, so she held back her tears, crossing her arms and praying for a successful operation.
Another four hours passed, and her hand went numb. At the same time, the operating room door opened, and the doctor came out and told them, "The operation was a success."
Lin Qi breathed a sigh of relief, and Du Yunyan burst into tears. She hugged Du Yunyan and gently stroked her back with her numb hand.
In the ward, Tang Heng woke up and Du Yunyan fed him water. He noticed that Lin Luo was there too, and the first thing he said was to ask her: "Lin Luo, why didn't you go to evening study?"
"You are like this now, is evening self-study important?" Du Yunyan choked and said, tears almost falling.
Maybe the anesthetic effect had just worn off and he was completely awake, and he felt that he couldn't move his waist.
The doctor said that he needed to rest and would not be able to get out of bed for a month or two. Lin Luo lowered her eyes.
The next time I heard him speak, it wasn't regret that he couldn't go to work, nor was it that he felt guilty towards Du Yunyan. Instead, he said, "What should I do? I can't pick up Lin Luo from school."
She turned her back and wiped away her tears. "I'm not a child anymore. I know the way."
"It's dark at night."
"I'm not afraid." Lin Xiao gritted her teeth and raised her voice. "I already told you not to answer the call. Don't you understand?"
"Your Uncle Tang is doing this for your own good. Why are you so fierce?" Du Yunyan patted her on the back. "Go back! Your brother is still at Aunt Li's house. He's still a child and will be scared."
"Oh." Before leaving, she said to Tang Heng again: "I'm not afraid of walking at night. I don't need anyone to pick me up."
"Hiss—" Du Yunyan frowned and kicked her. She quickly closed the door and left.
Tang Heng was not seriously injured and was discharged from the hospital within a few days, but he could only lie in bed at home and could not move.
During evening study, Lin Luo worked on math problems for a class and felt dizzy and her head was pounding. She put down her pen and lay down on the table to rest.
Zhu Changyu returned to his seat. He was not wearing school uniform today. He was wearing a sweatshirt and a hat. He didn't talk to them all day, which was very abnormal.
Xu Yangyang took advantage of him not noticing and pulled off his hat, revealing his bruised face and nose. He tried to cover his face with his hands, but Xu Yangyang slapped his hands away, holding his face and asking, "What's wrong with your face?"
Lin Luo also stood up. Zhu Changyu knew he couldn't hide anymore, so he took Xu Yangyang's hand away and explained, "Last night..."
"You're being blocked again?" Before he could finish his words, Xu Yangyang said while rolling up his sleeves.
"What do you mean 'again'?" Zhu Changyu's voice trailed off. "It wasn't the same group as before. It was a stranger, about 190cm tall and muscular. Seeing that I was being stubborn and refusing to hand over my wallet, he punched me in the face. I fought him tenaciously and finally got rid of him cleverly."
"Amazing!" Lin Luo foolishly believed it, but Xu Yangyang saw through it at a glance, "That's only 10% true."
"Don't tell me this thug is pretty good at judging people. How did he know you were so weak and easy to rob?"
"You are wrong. He is blind and doesn't know who my boss is." Zhu Changyu raised his eyebrows and said.
Xu Yangyang continued to roll up his sleeves, "Since you said so, then I will help you get revenge!"
"I'm not talking about you."
Lin Luo knew it was Fu Xingchuan, and Xu Yangyang knew it too. "He's not here right now, and he's busy! He doesn't have the time to bother with you, and you're still looking down on me. How are you going to get home later? If you beg me, I can consider sending you home."
"Don't worry, I won't beg you even if I'm beaten to death." He had just finished speaking when he saw Tong Yun and Ding Wenxin talking and passing by the door. He immediately said, "I don't want to chat with you anymore. I have other things to do and I'm leaving first."
Xu Yangyang watched his back as he caught up, lowered his rolled-up sleeves, and nodded, "He's finally got it."
Lin Luo lay back on the table. Fu Xingchuan was a spontaneous person. If he didn't want to attend evening self-study, he wouldn't come.
Her eyes fell on a notebook placed in the upper left corner of the desk. It belonged to Fu Xingchuan, and it was lent to her by Tong Yun. A man who had never owned a notebook before, he bought one just for her, and listened carefully to every class, taking notes.
Lin Luo's hand rubbed against the uncovered tip of a black pen, leaving a streak of black ink on it. She quickly wiped it off with water, but although the obvious mark was wiped off, she still felt that the back of her hand was stained with gray.
Just like the words on a notebook, once you write them down, it is impossible to erase them without leaving traces. Every stroke is proof of his heartbeat.
It was not until she got off the bus that Lin Qi put down her hand and looked away.
Because she remembered that Tang Heng was injured and no one came to pick her up. She said those words in the hospital just to reassure Tang Heng, but in fact she was still afraid.
The alley was deserted at around ten o'clock. The streetlights were dim and most of them were broken. Even the residential buildings they passed by had few lights on. Although they could see the road clearly, Lin Luo still pulled a flashlight from her bag to illuminate the way.
"Lin Luo, be brave, there is nothing to be afraid of." She said to herself and unconsciously quickened her pace.
After walking a few steps, a man with a crew cut came towards him. He was holding a beer bottle in his hand, his face was flushed, and he seemed to be drunk.
Lin Luo held the flashlight tightly, walked along the wall with her head slightly lowered, and glanced at the man out of the corner of her eye, feeling very nervous.
"Sister." The man walked towards her. She hurried forward, but he easily caught up and blocked her way. "Why are you running? I'm a running... champion. Even if I'm drunk, I can still catch up with you."
"Are you... a high school student? Do you have any money on you? I'm in a hurry to go out and forgot to bring any money. Can you lend me some money to buy some wine?"
He spoke incoherently, but Lin Luo remembered Zhu Changyu's face and thought that it was better to have less trouble than more, and there was nothing wrong with using money to avoid disaster.
She reached into her pocket and searched in her schoolbag, only to find that she had left her wallet in the classroom. She had no choice but to say, "I don't have any money on me."
"No money." The man yelled immediately. Lin Luo was startled. She turned her head to look at the alley entrance. No one was passing by. She couldn't outrun him. What should she do?
Lin Qiao turned around and saw the man's eyes wide open. She hurriedly said, "I have money at home. I'll get it for you when I get home. Okay? As long as you don't touch me, the money will be easy to deal with."
The man looked at her. Lin Luo was afraid that he would ask for too much, but she was also afraid that he would not agree. After all, he should not be stupid and knew that she might not keep her promise and give him the money.
"...Then forget it! I suddenly sobered up, just pretend you didn't hear what I just said!" The man said to her seriously. Lin Luo didn't expect that this episode would end like this.
She looked at the man's receding back, breathed a sigh of relief, and continued walking forward.
Passing by the old villa on the way, she saw the light on in Fu Xingchuan's room on the second floor, and her heart ached inexplicably.
The streetlight in front of the old house was very bright, and her shadow on the ground became clearer, and another shadow behind her also gradually became clearer.
Lin Luo turned off the flashlight, patted his chest, adjusted his breathing, and walked downstairs to his home.
When she got home, Lin Xiao shouted, "I'm back."
Du Yunyan was counting the goods on the balcony. "Keep your voice down, your brother is asleep."
"Oh." Lin Luo walked over and glanced at the master bedroom. She found the door was still open and Tang Heng was lying on the bed. She leaned against the door and asked softly, "Uncle Tang, why haven't you gone to bed yet?"
"I slept too much during the day and now I can't sleep."
"Is that so? You should get more rest." Lin Luo chuckled. "Do you need me to close the door?"
"Okay, thank you."
Before closing the door, Lin Tiantian said, "Good night."
"Yeah, you too."
She walked to the balcony. She had finished her homework for the day and wanted to help Du Yunyan. "Take this flowerpot out and put it at the door. I'll throw it away tomorrow."
Lin Luo saw the potatoes she had buried inside and asked, "They are still good, why did you throw them away?"
"It's in the way here, what are you going to do with it if you don't throw it away?"
“You can grow potatoes.”
Du Yunyan looked at the flower pot and said, "This pot is not big, the soil is not good, and the weather is getting colder. I can't grow potatoes."
It turns out it can't grow! She didn't consider so many factors. No wonder so many days have passed and there's no sign of anything.
She moved the flower pot to the door, squatted down and talked to the seeds buried in the soil, "I was originally thinking of waiting for you to grow so that Mommy could make steak and potatoes for Uncle Tang! But it's a pity that you didn't live up to your expectations, and our family doesn't have the conditions to support you. I'm sorry! Goodbye."
"What are you mumbling about? Go to sleep!"
"good."
Lin Luo took her schoolbag back to her room. It was still eleven o'clock, and she didn't plan to sleep. She sat at the desk, opened Fu Xingchuan's notebook, and took out Xia Ruichu's notes. They reviewed and recited the knowledge points together.
I have to work harder, and if the conditions are not good, I will create them, she said to herself.
Days passed. On Mid-Autumn Festival, she sat by the windowsill, memorizing English words under the moonlight. On National Day, red flags fluttered in the streets, and she bought one and stuck it in the pen holder on her desk. For seven days, she timed herself daily to complete a comprehensive science test, improving her handwriting speed.
Senior Xia Ruichu’s handwriting is very beautiful. Lin Luo looked at her notes and kept imitating her handwriting while doing her homework.
"In this monthly exam, several students in our class scored over 50 points. Fu Xingchuan scored 57, Xu Yangyang scored 55... and Lin Qiao scored 50."
"Lin Qiao's exam paper was very neat and her handwriting was beautiful. You can borrow her answer sheet to admire it."
…
"Teacher Wu, I got 106 on the math test this time."
"marvelous."
…
"That villain Cheng Kaizhong, you've made more progress than Tian Yajun, so why did he give her the Star of Progress?"
"It doesn't matter. I can see my progress with my own eyes. I don't need a certificate to prove it."
…
This time it is no longer a dream. It is a fact that she is making progress bit by bit. Although her progress is not as rapid as Tong Yun's, it is already very gratifying for her.
Now Lin Luo finds it easier to fall asleep at night. Although she can only sleep less than 6 hours, she still feels good when she wakes up.
"Uncle." She came out of the bedroom and saw Tang Heng standing on the balcony. She said in surprise, "You can stand up now!"
"Lin Luo, look." Tang Heng pointed to a few white foam boxes in front of him. Lin Luo walked closer and saw that there was soil in the boxes, and green sprouts were emerging from the soil. "This is..."
Tang Heng pointed to a green sprout in the middle and said, "This is your treasure. It's sprouting now."
She also sprouted.
