Chapter 51 Weighing the Pros and Cons
Sheng Tingzhou glanced at him indifferently, a very faint smile curving his lips.
"Really? I've never heard of that before."
His tone was full of undisguised contempt.
After saying that, he ignored He Yufeng and turned to look at Song Zhiwei, his voice still cold.
“Attorney Song, there’s a problem with the translation you submitted this morning.”
Upon hearing that it was about work, Song Zhiwei immediately became nervous.
She quickly pressed, "President Sheng, which one has the problem?"
"Come back to my office and we'll talk."
He didn't offer any further explanation. After speaking, he turned and walked towards the elevator with steady and powerful steps.
Song Zhiwei quickly turned to look at He Yufeng, a hint of apology appearing on her face.
"Mr. He, I'm sorry, I have to take care of some work first. I'm really sorry."
He Yufeng was very considerate and waved his hand with a smile.
"It's okay, you go ahead and do your work. Work is important. We can chat on WeChat later, no rush."
"Um."
She nodded slightly, quickly grabbed her phone from the table, and hurried after him.
He silently followed Sheng Tingzhou into the elevator and pressed the floor button.
There were only two people in the small space, and the air seemed to freeze.
She kept her head down, not daring to look at him.
We arrived at the door of Sheng Tingzhou's office.
She stopped, took a deep breath, and tried to steady her somewhat erratic heartbeat before reaching out to push open the door.
"Mr. Sheng, what exactly is wrong with the document you just mentioned?"
Sheng Tingzhou was sitting behind his desk, his slender fingers casually flipping through documents without even looking up.
He glanced at her indifferently, then pointed to the tall stack of documents next to his desk.
"Everything is here, take your time to look at it."
"ah?"
Song Zhiwei stared at the thick stack of documents, which was more than twenty pages long, and her heart sank.
Really?
Could it be that everything is in the wrong place?
She couldn't help but ask in a low voice, "Mr. Sheng, do you mean... all the documents need to be reviewed again?"
Sheng Tingzhou then slowly raised his eyes.
"What, you expect me to mark them out one by one for you? And teach you how to correct them one by one?"
"I am your boss, not your tutor."
Song Zhiwei gritted her teeth.
She stood in front of the pile of documents, her expression stiff, but she still reached out and began to flip through them one by one.
There were at least dozens of documents in front of him, stacked thickly together.
The office was so quiet you could hear the rustling of paper being rubbed together, and no one offered any warning.
There isn't even a directory or tags; finding anything here is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
She could only open each one carefully, turning to the cover and the first page.
She can manage with Chinese, but when she encounters English materials, she has to recognize them word by word.
I went through it from beginning to end, staring at the dense text until my vision started to blur.
Fortunately, these were all handled in the last two days.
She still had some recollection in her mind, vaguely remembering which ones were financial statements.
Which are project proposals, and which are external communications?
Otherwise, it would really make me feel nauseous, or even want to vomit.
Sheng Tingzhou crossed his legs and leaned casually against his office chair.
He placed his hands on the armrests, his fingertips tapping lightly.
He watched her frantically trying to do something, a hint of disdain in his eyes.
After a long while, he finally spoke slowly.
"A blind date?"
Song Zhiwei paused, her hand still turning the page.
Her heart tightened, her face flushed slightly, and she nodded somewhat awkwardly, "Mm."
The sound was so soft it almost seemed to dissipate into the air.
She dared not look up, afraid of meeting those all-seeing eyes.
Sheng Tingzhou sneered, a mocking smile curving his lips.
"I remember you're only twenty-three, right?"
Song Zhiwei forced a smile, her expression somewhat strained.
"Give it a try sooner rather than later; you might just find the right one."
She regretted it as soon as the words left her mouth.
That was said too lightly, as if it were just a perfunctory remark.
But she knew in her heart that this was just an excuse.
At least that's what Xie Lingling advised her.
“Zhiwei, you need to get out of there. Don’t keep locking yourself in the Zhou family’s gossip. Feelings can’t wait, and you have to fight for your own destiny.”
Sheng Tingzhou narrowed his eyes, staring at her with a half-smile.
"So what kind of person are you planning to find? How outstanding do you need to be to be considered good?"
Song Zhiwei closed the document in her hand, and the edge of the paper made a slight "snap" sound.
She felt inexplicably uncomfortable.
She went on blind dates simply to shut people up and stop being pressured by Zhou Zhiwei's affair.
As for who she would marry in the future, she hadn't thought about it at all.
Marriage was never something she longed for.
It is a compromise.
"President Sheng, can I finish processing the documents first?"
Her voice was a little hoarse as she tried to remain calm.
"Is this question really that difficult to answer?"
Sheng Tingzhou raised an eyebrow, but his gaze lingered on her.
"Or perhaps you simply don't know what you want?"
Song Zhiwei straightened up a bit, her back taut.
She secretly pinched her palm, her nails digging into her flesh, using the pain to remind herself to stay awake.
"As you know, I'm in an awkward position in this industry. Families with good financial standing simply won't consider me."
Her voice grew softer and softer.
Those with a stronger background than the Zhou family would definitely seek a marriage alliance with someone of equal social standing, emphasizing a match in bloodline, connections, and resources.
As a stepdaughter, she had neither the status of a legitimate daughter nor the power to inherit.
Even Zhou Huaiqing is cold and distant towards her, so who would consider her a proper marriage partner?
Those less fortunate than the Zhou family, or those who want to use their influence to rise in status, will also prioritize choosing Zhou Xiaolu.
The Zhou family's biological daughter is outstanding in appearance, has a amiable personality, and is backed by her entire family.
Marrying her is an investment, a stepping stone to promotion.
She, as a stepdaughter, was not well-liked by Zhou Huaiqing.
Marrying her would bring neither prestige nor benefits; it might even attract a lot of trouble.
Sheng Tingzhou gave a soft snort, and the smile on his lips faded.
Instead, a chill pervaded the air.
"You think so little of yourself?"
"I just know my place."
Song Zhiwei said softly, her tone calm.
She lowered her eyes, her fingertips unconsciously tracing the rim of the teacup.
She knew she was just an ordinary person, without a distinguished family background or a powerful support system.
All she had was a passable face and a job that barely kept her looking decent.
"You can't go far relying on your looks."
She murmured to herself, her voice very soft.
The upper class is never short of beautiful women; what they want is a bond of mutual benefit.
True marriage is never based on attraction, but on a precise decision made after weighing the pros and cons.
Feelings can be exploited, or they can be discarded.
Only mutual benefit is an eternal bond.
Song Zhiwei was well aware of this, and that was why she never fantasized about being treated sincerely by anyone.
"So, you thought that blind date you just met was alright?"
Sheng Tingzhou suddenly spoke.
He leaned back on the sofa armrest, one hand casually resting on his knee.
Song Zhiwei didn't really feel much.
He Yufeng looked quite composed at first glance, wearing a dark gray custom-made suit.
Speak at a moderate pace, using polite yet tactful language.
He mentioned that he is the deputy captain of the criminal investigation team and has a busy daily work schedule, but he still has a sense of responsibility towards his family.
These words sounded flawless and made no one uncomfortable.
