Chapter 78 An Important Day
Xu Jialan flipped to the signature section at the end of the document and repeatedly checked the handwriting. "Yes, this is indeed my mother's handwriting."
His hand holding the document trembled slightly.
"So, she was willing to endure Xu Qingbang for so many years just so that I could inherit his company." His voice was deep, suppressing his emotions.
In the end, however, the voice turned into anger: "Is Xu Qingbang's company that important? Is it worth sacrificing her happiness for the rest of her life, or even her life!"
His eyes were red, whether from anger or because he felt sorry for Lan Wangshu, it was hard to tell.
Chen Yao'an quickly grasped his hand, feeling distressed as well. "Don't be like this. She might be doing this just for you. She just wants you to have something to rely on in the future."
"That's why...that's why I think she's so foolish. Her son isn't worth it at all."
He had lived a muddled life all these years, and he didn't care about any damn company. Xu Qingbang's company was worthless in his eyes.
However, Lan Wangshu was different. She and her grandfather had also put in a lot of effort into that company, and in her opinion, it should rightfully belong to him, their son.
But he always looked down on what she cherished, and even when he found out, he didn't care at all.
His son is a real jerk!
At this moment, he wished he could fly back to Beijing immediately and take the company back from Xu Qingbang.
But now, he...
He looked up at Chen Yao'an, but all he could see was conflicted.
But, Mom, he promised this girl he'd stay and live here...
Xu Jialan looked at her, suddenly at a loss for what to do.
He had never felt so confused and helpless before.
Seeing his struggle, Chen Yao'an felt a pang of heartache. She cupped his face in her hands and said, "I guess your mother wouldn't want to see you like this either."
He suddenly reached out and hugged her tightly, burying his face in her neck. A tear fell from his eye and disappeared into her clothes.
Chen Yao'an, however, was completely unaware and raised her hand to pat his back reassuringly.
After a long while, his emotions gradually calmed down, and Chen Yaoan said, "Xu Jialan, why don't you go back and take a look?"
Chen Yao'an uttered those words with slight difficulty.
Only she knows how much she didn't mean it when she said those words.
Xu Jialan buried her head in her arms and shook her head without saying a word.
Chen Yao'an, however, secretly breathed a sigh of relief in a somewhat despicable way.
After that, Xu Jialan didn't say anything, and silently put the document in the cabinet, along with Lan Wangshu's other things.
The matter was never mentioned again.
The next morning, as usual, Xu Jialan said he would pick her up from get off work that evening when she left home.
But in the afternoon, she waited for him in Youye for more than half an hour without seeing him. She called him but he didn't answer.
In the end, she had to go home alone, worried that something might have happened to him.
When she got home, she saw that his front door was half open, so she went in to see if he had come home yet.
As she walked into the yard, she saw that the door to his living room was also half open. Through the glass, she saw Xu Jialan sitting on the sofa, hunched over and staring at the documents on the coffee table.
She didn't continue walking forward, but instead coughed lightly.
Upon hearing the noise, Xu Jialan, like a startled bird, hurriedly tucked the documents on the coffee table under the sofa cushions.
Only after finishing collecting did he turn to look at the door.
Why are you here?
Chen Yao'an then walked in, saying, "You didn't come to pick me up, so I came to see you."
Jian Jialan suddenly stood up from the sofa, walked to the door, hugged her tightly, and said apologetically, "I'm sorry, I forgot to pick you up."
Chen Yao'an remained silent for a moment.
Xu Jialan looked up at her, her tone cautious, "What's wrong? Are you angry?"
"I'm so sorry, please don't be angry."
Chen Yao'an wasn't really that angry. Knowing he had something on his mind, she didn't hold it against him. "Never mind, go get me a glass of water."
"Don't be angry, I'll go right now." He turned around and went to pour water.
While he went to get water, Chen Yaoan lifted the back of the sofa and took a look. It was indeed the document, along with the letter his mother had written to him.
She sighed and silently put the backrest back.
"The water's here." Xu Jialan came in from outside, carrying a cup, and handed it to her.
As she drank her water, she listened to him say, "By the way, we haven't picked out the tables and chairs we want to put under the gazebo yet. What kind do you like? We can go online and pick some out."
"Okay, I'll go see what kind of things would be suitable for our yard."
The two went to the courtyard and looked around for a while before she said, "I think it should match the style of the gazebo to look good. Why don't we choose something wooden and simple? That way it will be easier to move around."
"Okay, I'll go online and take a look." Xu Jialan took out her phone and clicked on a shopping website.
He was looking at his phone while Chen Yao'an went to look at the fish in the pond.
Several small fish swam happily in the pond. She had bought these fish a few days ago, and they seemed to be adapting very well. She picked up the fish food next to her and threw it in, watching them scramble for the food for a long time.
After a long silence from Xu Jialan, she asked him, "Have you made your choice?"
There was no response.
She turned to look at him and found that he wasn't looking at it at all, but staring blankly at his phone screen.
Chen Yao'an didn't interrupt him. She silently turned around, grabbed a handful of fish food, and threw it into the pond, startling the fish inside into scattering in all directions.
The day after tomorrow was the day the two had agreed to get their marriage certificate. Xu Jialan was not in a good mood, so Chen Yaoan deliberately did not disturb him the day before, letting him sort out his feelings on his own.
On the joyous day of receiving their marriage certificate, Chen Yaoan got up early, dressed up carefully, and went next door to find Xu Jialan.
Xu Jialan hadn't gotten up yet, and the door was tightly closed, so she had to use the key to open the door herself and pull him out of bed.
This time, Chen Yao'an was genuinely angry.
"It's getting late, aren't you getting up yet?"
Xu Jialan, still half-asleep, glanced at the time and said in a confused tone, "It's not time to get up for work yet, is it?"
His words struck Chen Yao'an like a bolt from the blue.
It turns out he had forgotten that they were supposed to get their marriage certificate today.
"You've forgotten what day it is today."
Xu Jialan then realized something was wrong, glanced at the date again, and her mind went blank.
He had completely forgotten that today was the day they were going to get their marriage certificate!
Damn it, how could he forget such an important day!
He was about to open his mouth to explain.
Then Chen Yao'an said, "Never mind, it's not that important."
"Why isn't it important?" He reached out to take her hand, but missed.
Chen Yao'an had already gotten up from the bed and was walking outside.
Oops!
Xu Jialan threw off the covers and chased after him without even putting on her shoes, but was stopped by Chen Yaoan.
"Don't come any closer, I want to be alone."
In this situation, how could he not go over? He ignored her and took a few more steps forward.
"If you come any closer, I'm ignoring you!" She took a few steps back.
This time, Xu Jialan took it to heart, and she might actually do what she said.
So he stopped halfway.
“I’m going back first,” Chen Yao’an said. “Let’s both think it over carefully before we talk about it.”
After Chen Yaoan left, Xu Jialan slumped back onto the bed in frustration, running her hands through her hair and fiddling with it.
He was annoyed; how could he have forgotten something so important!
When Chen Yaoan returned home, Yan Shumei looked puzzled and asked, "Why are you back so soon?"
"I have something to do today, so I won't go," Chen Yaoan said, her head bowed.
Yan Shumei was somewhat dissatisfied, "Such an important matter, and you just say you're not going? Do you think we're playing house?"
"Grandma, it's precisely because this is such an important matter that we need to think it through carefully. You don't need to worry about it."
Yan Shumei felt uneasy. "Has Xu Jialan changed her mind?"
Chen Yaoan admired Yan Shumei's imagination. "No, Grandma didn't. It's just that Xu Jialan had something come up today."
Yan Shumei still looked unconvinced.
Chen Yaoan had no choice but to say, "Xu Jialan just received news that her father is seriously ill."
Yan Shumei immediately fell silent. "That's indeed not appropriate."
"Is he going back? Did he say he'd take you with him?"
Chen Yao'an was very annoyed and had little patience left, so she simply said, "I don't know, Grandma, I'm going back to my room."
Back in her room, she buried herself in the covers, feeling incredibly annoyed.
He actually forgot something so important!
Chen Yao'an was furious.
She turned over, then wondered if she should leave Xu Jialan here, or send him back.
For the next few days, Chen Yaoan ignored Xu Jialan. When he came to see her, she turned him away, saying she needed to calm down.
The two remained deadlocked for almost a week.
Finally, Chen Yaoan realized that rather than leaving Xu Jialan here, which would only cause them both distress, it was better to let him go back and take care of his own affairs.
If he wants to come back, he will naturally come back; if he doesn't want to come back... then it's just that the two of them are destined to be apart, after all, a forced relationship is never sweet.
Having figured this out, Chen Yaoan felt much better and took the initiative to go find him.
Xu Jialan was still trying to explain to her about the day they got their marriage certificate, "I'm sorry, I was just too busy those days and my mind was too chaotic, so I forgot."
"I know."
Both of them knew the truth, and neither of them spoke for a moment.
Finally, Chen Yaoan broke the silence, "Xu Jialan, why don't you go back to Beijing?"
"What do you mean?" Xu Jialan looked up at her.
“I know you can’t let go of your mother’s last wish. If you don’t go back, you’ll feel guilty, and I’ll feel bad too. Neither of us will be happy.”
Xu Jialan remained silent for a moment.
