Chapter 10
Friday's open house finally gave Mu Zhengxi, who had been on tenterhooks for days, a chance to get to the airport. He rushed there early in the morning.
The sky, shrouded in dark clouds and autumn rain, gradually cleared up after the plane flew over Hanyang.
The Cold Dew solar term has passed, and there are slight temperature differences between morning and evening in Changqing, but it is still very hot under the sun at noon on sunny days.
The school's concrete walls can only trap students who don't want to skip class.
When Mu Zhengxi jumped down from the wall, he bumped into a guy who was about to climb over the wall. The guy was so frightened that his legs went weak and he fell to the ground, cursing the "national essence" several times.
"Sorry, bro, did I scare you?" Mu Zhengxi walked over apologetically, patted the man on the shoulder, kindly helped him up, and even tidied his school uniform, asking with concern, "Are you alright, bro?"
"You you you—"
The person who points at themselves and can't speak for a long time looks like they're possessed.
Mu Zhengxi pressed down the other person's hand, "Dude, let's put aside 'you, me, and him' for now. Let me ask you something first: where is Class 22 of Senior High?"
When Mu Zhengxi blurted out Jiang Jiawei's class, he was stunned for a second.
The skinny man whose acupoints had been removed let out a screech, "Holy crap, it's you!!!"
Not far away, several students who were having a physical education class on the playground turned around when they heard the noise. Mu Zhengxi quickly pushed the person behind the bushes and glanced over. Luckily, they were alright.
"You know me?!?!"
No way, really? His fame has already spread to Changqing, two thousand kilometers away?
The boy's single-eyelid eyes widened with excitement. "Bro, we played basketball together that day at the community center!!" He had been invited by a friend to play basketball that day, and who knew he would run into Chen Pengfei's rival, who turned out to be such a formidable opponent.
Mu Zhengxi slowly rummaged through the sparse memories of the portrait, and it seemed he had a vague recollection of it.
The person who suddenly became alert and moved two steps away looked at him with some panic, and quickly clarified, "No, bro, what are you doing in our class? I've never caused trouble for your brother. That was the first time I played basketball with Chen Pengfei."
"Our class?" Mu Zhengxi quickly grasped the key point, "You're also in Class 22 of Senior High??"
"No way, buddy—"
"Is Jiang Jiawei in your class?"
"Huh? You're looking for our class representative?"
"Student committee member?"
"Yes, didn't you mean Jiang Jiawei?"
Mu Zhengxi was somewhat surprised, "She's your class's academic representative??"
"yes."
"How could she be your class representative?!"
Seeing the look of someone with intellectual disabilities fall on him, the boy said, "If she's good at studying, then we'll elect her as the class representative."
Wait, no, Mu Zhengxi clearly remembers that Jiang Jiawei's grades weren't very good in high school, which is why she ended up going to a nursing school. Come to think of it, she had the worst academic background among their siblings. In his dream, she mentioned during a conversation that because she was obsessed with shoujo manga in high school, and her father practiced a "happy education" approach, never demanding high grades from her, her initially good grades became average because she didn't study seriously. How come she's the class monitor now?
Never mind that for now, let's deal with the important matters first.
Why are you looking for our class representative?
"I'm looking for her—" Mu Zhengxi glanced at the person, giving them a "why should I tell you?" look, and asked, "Where is your class?"
“Nona?”
The boy raised his chin to indicate the class lined up diagonally across his line of sight.
This really came without any effort at all.
Relieved to find out that it wasn't someone coming to cause trouble, he nudged Mu Zhengxi's arm with his elbow and said, "Hey buddy, what's your name? Let's get to know each other."
Mu Zhengxi peeked out and replied, "Mu Zhengxi."
"My name is Zhang Chao."
Mu Zhengxi gave a perfunctory "hmm".
"Hey, which school do you go to?"
Mu Zhengxi half-stood up and took two steps along the bushes, then turned back and grabbed the "pole" behind him, making up a story, "From No. 8 Middle School, I've dropped out of school now."
"No. 8 Middle School?? Hey, wait, what do you want with our student representative?"
"Something came up."
"Did our class representative offend you? That can't be right."
Zhang Chao had a very good impression of Jiang Jiawei. In the two years they were in the same class, he had never seen Jiang Jiawei angry. Most importantly, she was easy to talk to and didn't cause trouble. She would often cover for the teachers for them. Not to mention, her dad would often give him a discount when he went to her family's breakfast shop.
I found a spot with a great view and some bushes for cover.
Mu Zhengxi immediately spotted Jiang Jiawei, who was standing second from the left in the third row.
Looking at Mu Zhengxi squatting beside him, staring intently at him, Zhang Chao slowly realized what was going on and asked, "You like our class representative?"
Mu Zhengxi turned his head and a lewd smile appeared on his face, exactly the same as Xu Zizhao's when he was gossiping. Something fell from the tree without warning and lightly hit his back before rolling away.
He neither denied nor admitted it.
This question was skipped entirely.
"I'm asking you, does your class representative have a boyfriend?"
"As far as I know, no."
"Are there any boys in your class who like her?" Mu Zhengxi added seriously, "Or boys from other classes."
"Or other grades."
"Never heard of her." Zhang Chao curled his lip. Although many boys had a good relationship with Jiang Jiawei, it was basically just a pure friendship limited to being class committee members. In the famously beautiful liberal arts class of No. 3 Middle School, Jiang Jiawei was not even in the top tier. Zhang Chao nudged Mu Zhengxi's shoulder and pointed to another girl with shoulder-length hair, "That one, the class beauty from the next class, so many boys like her, not just from our school, but also from many other schools."
Mu Zhengxi glanced at it.
“Class 13 has both quality and quantity of beauties. Our class has more than just a lot of them,” Zhang Chao rambled on, introducing each one to Mu Zhengxi.
After the warm-up exercises, the students, scattered like shuffled billiard balls, began to gather in twos and threes towards the starting line on the playground. In the humanities classes, girls made up nearly three-quarters of the class, while there were only a handful of boys.
Mu Zhengxi was absolutely confident in his appearance; his only concern was that Jiang Jiawei might have poor eyesight and aesthetic sense, and might go astray.
The laps begin.
A group of people with gloomy faces crawled forward under the sun like caterpillars. Jiang Jiawei was an exception among the caterpillars; she seemed quite happy and did not show any irritability from the scorching sun.
Mu Zhengxi rested his elbows on his knees, his face held high. At this running speed, he could run three laps in one go.
"Hey, is your class representative good at sports?"
Zhang Chao was interrupted and paused for a moment, then said, "It's alright."
Mu Zhengxi noticed that Jiang Jiawei's ponytail was different from other girls'; it wasn't loose, but always braided into a plait, with the ends slightly curled up like a small checkmark.
"You really like our class representative???"
Zhang Chao looked at Mu Zhengxi, wavering between "Seriously? Are you kidding me? Dude?" and "Incredible."
"Who is that guy?!"
Zhang Chao suddenly felt a strain on his shoulder, cried out in pain, and felt the air pressure drop beside him, a gloomy atmosphere enveloping him.
During the second lap of the morning exercise, the girl next to Jiang Jiawei remained the same, but a guy suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
"Ouch! Brother, let go, make the first move!"
Mu Zhengxi glanced to the side, then loosened his grip with a hint of apology, patting the other person's shoulder as if to cover up the obvious.
Who is that guy?
Zhang Chao squinted and glanced at it.
"That's our sports committee."
I don't know what was said, but Jiang Jiawei, who was running along just fine, stopped laughing.
"Brother, brother, brother, brother!"
Zhang Chao's expression and voice were distorted. He hurriedly patted the hand restraining his shoulder, "Don't get excited, don't get excited! Our sports committee member likes Chen Jingyu! She's the girl next to our academic committee member."
"Oh, really?"
Mu Zhengxi withdrew his hand and snorted, "Well, he has good taste."
That's really hard to understand.
Zhang Chao, clutching his almost ruined shoulder, quickly moved to the side, keeping a step away from the person.
"I'm not kidding, bro, your grip is fucking strong."
Mu Zhengxi gave him a disdainful look. "You're too weak."
"...We're not even the same body type, okay?"
The word "ma" was barely out of his mouth before it was drowned out by Mu Zhengxi's angry voice.
"I'm telling you, if you sports committee members like someone, just go find them! What's the point of using others as wingmen?!"
The person jogging past turned around, perhaps having heard the sound, and Mu Zhengxi quickly pressed Zhang Chao's head down again.
"Jiawei!"
Jiang Jiawei ran up and caught up with Chen Jingyu.
Zhang Chao, who nearly had his head severed from his body, angrily shouted, "Brother, are you trying to murder me?!"
"What kind of junk is this?!"
Mu Zhengxi picked up the pale pink, wrinkled thing that kept falling from the tree and landed on his neck. He was already annoyed, but being hit by it made him even more annoyed.
Seeing the guy's sudden outburst of anger, Zhang Chao's momentum vanished instantly. He leaned closer for a look and said, "Oh, this thing? I don't recognize it either."
She complained, "These fruits are so plentiful around this time of year, it's such a hassle to sweep the floor."
Mu Zhengxi looked up and saw a sea of pink. The entire playground was lined with these trees. He closed his eyes reflexively. Another tree brushed past his nose and fell onto his knee. He picked it up with his fingers and rubbed it open. There was a small black seed inside.
Jiang Jiawei's hair tie is also black.
"Hey bro, you just said your name is Zhang Chao?"
"ah."
"Let me introduce myself, Mu Zhengxi."
Zhang Chao was taken aback by the person who suddenly extended his hand in a serious manner. Just as he reached out to shake hands, someone slapped his hand. This was truly a novel greeting.
Mu Zhengxi and his men stood up together, their arms around each other like good buddies. After glancing back at the playground, they walked back to where they had first climbed in.
Do you have someone you like?
"ah?"
"Yes or no?"
"Dude, this is so sudden, I just broke up with my boyfriend."
Mu Zhengxi gave an apologetic look, then said seriously, "If you need any help from me, just let me know."
“…I suggested it.” Zhang Chao glanced at the person unhappily, speechless. “Besides, you’re helping me pursue someone, but who knows if she’ll end up liking you or me.”
That's quite possible," Mu Zhengxi nodded in agreement. Zhang Chao wanted to punch him in the face, but the difference in strength was too great.
However, those who live in the underworld may lack other skills, but they still need to be observant. Gossip is human nature, and Zhang Chao became interested, grinning mischievously, "Do you want me to help you pursue our class monitor?"
No, it's not about pursuing her.
Mu Zhengxi's righteous indignation was comparable to that of the dean of students who were catching truants, making it difficult for Zhang Chao to reconcile with the person who had been squatting under the tree peeping earlier.
"I'm looking at her."
Mu Zhengxi said this.
"ha?"
"Let's go, let's find a place to talk this over in detail."
