Chapter 1 Awakening

The 40th year of Kangping.

The autumn wind is bleak, the weather is getting colder, and the grass and trees are shaking with frost and dew.

In Suiyang County, a remote border region in the northwest, there is a mansion near a bustling city that is currently decorated with lanterns and colorful decorations.

The servants in the courtyard were whispering outside about the person locked in the woodshed.

"Is Miss dead? There's been no sound at all."

"Impossible, I just heard the sound. Don't meddle in other people's business. The Second Madam said that the young lady must not be released until the wedding day."

"Miss is so pitiful. Not only has she been switched at marriage, but she also has to marry a dying man."

"Stop talking! If the Second Madam hears you, she might betray you later."

The maid was so frightened that she immediately fell silent.

...

Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the branches and streamed through the windows, filling the room with rays of light.

In the simple, dilapidated woodshed, a slender young girl lay on a stone bed, emitting low moans of pain.

The sound was intermittent, as if she was in great pain. The girl was curled up, her clothes soaked with sweat, looking as if she had been pulled out of the water, her long, black hair clinging to her pale cheeks.

The pain all over her body forced her to open her eyes abruptly.

The roof was a drafty, tiled roof, and sunlight streamed into the cramped room through cracks in the walls. A gentle breeze caused the windows to rattle and clatter.

A table with peeling paint, only three legs remaining, leaned precariously against the wall.

There was a dilapidated chest piled up in the corner, and next to the chest were bundles of firewood.

She quickly stretched out her hands and looked down. They were a pair of hands, white as jade, with slender fingers, not her own hands with thin calluses.

Su Wan sensed something was wrong. Dragging her heavy body out of bed, she opened the old trunk, squatted down, and rummaged through it until she found a bronze mirror.

She held up the bronze mirror, and the reflection showed the face of a strange young girl.

This was an exceptionally beautiful face, with clear, bright eyes beneath arched, delicate eyebrows; a face as beautiful as a jade lotus, radiant with every glance. Even more striking than her modern appearance.

She's traveled through time.

Before she transmigrated, she was a medical doctoral student who spent her days interning at the hospital with her supervisor and working overtime at night to finish her thesis.

She was about to graduate in a month when, while passing by a psychiatric ward, she was pushed down the stairs by a mental patient. When she opened her eyes again, she found herself there.

Setting down the bronze mirror, she turned to return to her bed.

Perhaps because she had been squatting for too long, as soon as she stood up, her vision suddenly went black and she almost fainted. She quickly grabbed the earthen wall to catch her breath.

A girl's sixteen-year life, from birth to death, flashed through my mind like a revolving lantern.

The original owner came from an official family. Her father was the governor of Youzhou. He unfortunately died of illness three years ago, leaving behind the thirteen-year-old original owner and a five-year-old son.

Since the original owner's mother had also passed away, before his death, Su's father could only entrust the original owner and his five-year-old son to his brother Su Heng for care.

This brother, Su Heng, was no good person. His father had just passed away, and Su Heng and his wife began plotting to seize the family property that Su's father had left to the original owner.

Even more outrageous, at the urging of his wife, Yang, Su Heng changed the marriage that the original owner had already arranged, and had his daughter marry into the Zhao family of the Marquis of Shangjing in place of the original owner.

The original owner of the body was married off to a poor family in Shigang Village as a way to bring them good luck.

I heard that person is seriously ill and is currently bedridden, clinging to life.

Upon hearing this, the original owner prepared to escape while Su Heng and his wife were not paying attention, but on the day of her escape, she encountered Yang's nephew, who had come to visit relatives. She was caught on the spot by Yang's nephew.

To prevent the original owner from escaping again, Su Heng and his wife drugged him and locked him in the dilapidated woodshed in the backyard until their wedding day.

Perhaps the medicine was too potent, because the original owner never woke up after falling unconscious. When she opened her eyes again, she had become Su Wan.

Suddenly, a commotion arose outside.

"Young master, Madam has instructed that no one is allowed to go in and see Miss. You should go back. You will naturally be able to see Miss on her wedding day."

"No! My sister hasn't eaten for three days. I'm just bringing her some food. Why won't you let me in? Get out of my way!"

The boy's childish voice outside the door was filled with stubbornness.

"Young master, listen to me, Miss is safe and sound in her room, nothing has happened to her."

The boy stubbornly insisted, "But I clearly heard the servants say that my sister is dying! If you don't let me in, I'll go and report you to the authorities!"

Su Wan listened to the commotion outside. As the boy finished speaking and his footsteps faded into the distance, she knew that he really intended to report it to the authorities.

"No, no, young master, wait..." the maid cried out in a panic, "I promise you."

The boy's voice held a hint of joy as he replied, "Then I'll come out after I've finished watching my sister."

With a creak, the door opened.

Su Wan looked up and saw that it was the original owner's eight-year-old younger brother, Su Yuze.

The young man wore a simple, elegant robe. His fair and delicate face was thin, and his thick eyebrows and large eyes were brimming with tears. As if he didn't want her to see his appearance, he turned away and hastily wiped his face before looking at Su Wan.

Seeing that Su Wan was really alright, he immediately breathed a sigh of relief.

Su Wan was a little worried that Su Yuze would realize that the person standing in front of him had a different soul, so she stood there stunned and didn't say anything.

Fortunately, Su Yuze did not notice her change and was only concerned about her safety.

He ran over excitedly, reaching out his arms to hug her, but then, as if remembering that he was already over seven years old, he stopped in front of her, holding her wrist tightly, afraid that she would leave him at any moment.
