Su Wan shouted with all her might, her voice high-pitched and sharp, probably loud enough for half of the general's mansion to hear.
Lights immediately blazed outside the courtyard, and a cacophony of voices filled the air. Night patrol soldiers were running towards them.
Seeing Wei Jingzhuo standing protectively in front of Su Wan with his sword, the masked man smiled at Su Wan and said, "Miss Su, how can I compete with His Highness if you keep shouting like this? Farewell."
He sheathed his scimitar, leaped onto the wall, and disappeared into the darkness.
Wei Jingzhuo wanted to give chase, but Su Wan grabbed his arms tightly and said, "A-Jin, don't go. There are no lights outside. What if he hides outside the wall and attacks you?"
Wei Jingzhuo sheathed his sword, turned around, and said, "Do you perhaps think I am no match for him?"
Su Wan said, "How would I know who's better between you two? But you're a prince, and he's a prince too, so you should be about the same, right?"
The patrolling soldiers burst through the courtyard gate, and the firelight instantly illuminated the entire courtyard. A captain stepped forward and asked, "My lord, we just heard the lady shouting. What happened here?"
Wei Jingzhuo waved his hand and said, "The lady saw a mouse and that's why she screamed."
Su Wan thought to herself that Wei Jingzhuo was really mean, actually calling the prince of Southern Chu a rat. If Chu Yi were still in the shadows, he would be furious if he heard it.
The captain bowed and turned around, saying, "You all heard that the lady was frightened by the rats. She searched the yard carefully and came to report as soon as she found the rat holes."
The soldiers agreed and raised their torches to disperse and begin the search.
Wei Jingzhuo said, "Madam and I need to rest. You may leave now and strengthen the patrols."
The captain nodded and led his soldiers to retreat. Two more patrol teams were added outside the courtyard to strengthen the protection measures.
Back inside, Su Wan asked Wei Jingzhuo, "Ah Jin, why is the Seventh Prince of Southern Chu here? Why don't you reveal his identity?"
Wei Jingzhuo hung his longsword on the wall, turned around and said, "He is, after all, a prince of Southern Chu. If we openly become enemies, we will have another enemy. Although we no longer have the threat of the Western Rong, we are at a critical moment, and it is best not to make enemies."
Su Wan didn't believe it and said, "You just threatened to kill him."
“If he wants to take you away, I will naturally not let him,” Wei Jingzhuo said, sitting opposite her. “I will not let anyone take you away, whether it is the emperor of the Great Jin or the prince of the Southern Chu.”
Su Wan felt a sweet warmth in her heart and smiled, "Your words sound nice. But where do we get the strength to fight against the Emperor and the Southern Chu Kingdom?"
Wei Jingzhuo said, "When a tiger is young, even a puppy can bully it. We will not always be in a weak position. Making peace with the Western Rong is our first step. And this step was not taken by me, but by you, Awan."
Su Wan's eyes lit up, and she grasped Wei Jingzhuo's hand, saying, "I understand. We are now gathering our strength."
Wei Jingzhuo nodded: "That's right. After Yang Yaozu returns to the capital, he hates you so much that he will definitely spread rumors in front of the emperor. We should focus on dealing with the enemy in the capital now. As for the Southern Chu, they are in the south of the Great Jin Dynasty, far away from us, and do not pose much of a threat to us for the time being."
"Why did Chu Yi say he was going to take me away?" Su Wan asked, puzzled.
Wei Jingzhuo said, "The emperors of Southern Chu throughout history have all married into families of renowned physicians, but the current emperor has not done so. Southern Chu is the weakest of the four kingdoms and relies entirely on these families of renowned physicians to maintain its strength. If it loses the protection of these families, Southern Chu is in danger of being annexed."
"A family of renowned healers actually possesses such powerful abilities?" Su Wan asked in surprise.
“Of course,” Wei Jingzhuo said, gazing at the candlelight before him, “whether it’s a monarch ruling a country or a general galloping across the battlefield, who can guarantee they won’t fall ill? Naturally, no one wants to offend a family of divine physicians.”
Su Wan said, "I understand. Chu Yi just said that I cured the King of Xirong, so he thinks I am a descendant of a family of divine doctors."
Wei Jingzhuo nodded.
"Chu Yi is the next emperor of Southern Chu. To maintain Southern Chu's status, he must form a marriage alliance with a family of renowned physicians. That's why he wanted to take me away."
Wei Jingzhuo nodded again.
“But I’m not from any family of miracle doctors,” Su Wan said, taking a medical syringe from the pharmacy and waving it in her hand. “You know how I treat people.”
Wei Jingzhuo smiled slightly and said solemnly to her, "Awan, I don't care if you are from a family of divine doctors. I only know that you are my wife, and no one can take you away from me."
Su Wan put the syringe back in the pharmacy and said, "If the enemy really attacks, can we hold them off?"
She was still very worried. No matter how strong Wei Jingzhuo was, he couldn't possibly deal with the enemy's thousands of troops alone; his only reliance was the army in the Northwest Camp.
Wei Jingzhuo said, "Preparation is the key to success, and lack of preparation leads to failure. The Northwest Army is still very weak and not strong enough to fight against any enemy. But the Emperor will definitely target us, as he has always done. The theft of the imperial edict will only make him more aggressive."
“What about Chu Yi?” Su Wan asked, “Will he give up?”
Wei Jingzhuo shook his head and said, "He definitely won't give up. After all, this is the foundation of the Southern Chu state."
...
Chu Yi left the general's mansion and came to a quiet, deserted corner.
There, a male attendant was waiting. Seeing Chu Yi return, he quickly stepped forward and asked, "Your Highness, did the trip go smoothly?"
Chu Yi pulled down his face mask, revealing his face, and sighed, "It's obviously not going well. Didn't I come back all alone?"
The male attendant said awkwardly, "Your Highness, even if Miss Su is a goddess, she is already married to Wei Jingzhuo. We might as well just let it go."
