The moonlight tonight is exceptionally gentle.
After arranging the distribution of wages in the military camp, Wei Jingzhuo returned to the general's mansion with his entourage.
He dismounted, tossed the reins to the guard, and slowly made his way into the house in the darkness. The door creaked open.
Su Wan, who had just come out of the bathroom, looked up at the doorway.
After a few days apart, Wei Jingzhuo had become much thinner; it seemed that handling military affairs was indeed a tiring job.
His moon-white long robe was somewhat loose, his jet-black hair was half-tied up with a silver ribbon, and a few strands of hair fell down his temples. His handsome face appeared particularly cold in the candlelight.
Su Wan was still combing her hair with her head turned to the side when she looked up and stared blankly at Wei Jingzhuo, who was walking towards her with a faint smile. She was a little stunned.
His appearance instantly brought light to the room.
It had probably been a long time since she had looked at him so closely. Once she had some free time, she realized that Wei Jingzhuo's appearance was becoming increasingly breathtaking.
Seeing her stunned expression, Wei Jingzhuo's smile widened.
In the past, he would have been extremely averse to women looking at him like that, but now he was quite pleased that Ah Wan was looking at him like that.
He walked up to Su Wan, and Su Wan finally smelled a faint, cool fragrance. She came back to her senses, put down the comb, and smiled awkwardly, "Ah Jin, you're back."
Wei Jingzhuo smiled gently, picked up the wooden comb on the table, then pulled her soft, fair wrist and pressed her into the chair. "I'll comb Awan's hair."
Su Wan wanted to say no, but when she looked up at Wei Jingzhuo in the mirror, his deep black eyes were filled with a soft light that seemed to overflow, and she swallowed the words of refusal that were on the tip of her tongue.
The shadows of the red candle and the paper-cut window decorations, entwined with tender affection, made the servants waiting outside blush.
Su Wan also sensed that Wei Jingzhuo was different tonight, as if a beast was about to be unleashed from within him. She tried to find some topics to divert attention from the ambiguous atmosphere between the two.
"Has Ah Jin had dinner yet?" She didn't dare look at Wei Jingzhuo in the mirror, and picked up a plum blossom hairpin to play with.
The hazy night light streamed into the room through the window, falling on Su Wan and making her look like a poem or a painting.
Wei Jingzhuo's eyes hadn't left her since he entered the room. He knew she was uncomfortable, but he had no intention of letting her go tonight.
His clear voice was like a mountain spring as he said calmly, "I had dinner before I came back. Has A-Wan not eaten yet? I'll have someone prepare a meal for her right away."
In the past, whenever he returned to the manor, Ah Wan would subconsciously wait for him to come back so they could have dinner together.
Perhaps she herself was unaware of these habits of hers.
Su Wan quickly and instinctively grabbed his hand, "No need, I've already used it."
Wei Jingzhuo looked at the fair, jade-like hand in his hand, his eyes crinkling with a smile.
For some reason, Su Wan couldn't help but blush and feel her heart pounding whenever she saw Wei Jingzhuo tonight.
Wei Jingzhuo seemed to be deliberately teasing her, and said in a deep voice, "Awan, it's getting late."
Su Wan's face flushed red, and she said awkwardly, "It's still early, why don't we play some chess?"
After saying this, Su Wan realized that she didn't know how to play chess at all. She wanted to back out, but then she heard Wei Jingzhuo say, "Alright, if A-Wan wants to play chess, I'll gladly keep you company and play a game with you first."
Seemingly sensing Su Wan's tension, he smiled slightly, trying to ease her discomfort.
He quickly took out a box of black and white chess pieces and asked Su Wan, "Wan, would you like to play black or white?"
Su Wan: "..."
She doesn't know how to play chess; she was just saying it offhand.
But having come this far, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and agree, "Bai Zi."
Wei Jingzhuo glanced at her with his deep gaze, seemingly aware of her predicament. He smiled and said, "When playing chess with me, I set the rules. So, to let Awan familiarize herself with my rules, I'll play a game myself first, explaining them to Awan as I play. Awan, watch carefully, because I won't let you win later."
Su Wan didn't know the rules of chess, but since Wei Jingzhuo had mentioned it, it relieved her embarrassment at not knowing how to play.
He felt a sense of relief and let out a soft breath. Wei Jingzhuo was a martial artist, so this small sound could not escape his notice.
Su Wan nodded quickly, "Of course."
He smiled slightly and said nothing, then began to place the black and white pieces, playing against himself.
Su Wan rested her chin on her hands, watching Wei Jingzhuo play chess while listening to his clear, spring-like voice.
Wei Jingzhuo was an extremely skilled chess player, and few could beat him. He also did not teach others how to play chess.
He glanced up at Su Wan and saw that she was very interested, so he decided to teach her a lesson.
Half an hour later, Su Wan gradually understood the rules of this game.
Wei Jingzhuo had just finished a game, and he looked up at Su Wan and asked, "Has A-Wan memorized everything?"
Su Wan nodded. She was naturally intelligent and eager to learn, and with such a good teacher to teach her, how could she not learn?
"Don't worry, I remember everything," she said with a smile. "Ah Jin, you have to let me win, my chess skills are no match for yours."
It's not just that she can't beat them; this is her first time playing chess, and it would be a miracle if she could even finish a whole game.
Seeing that she was finally less tense, Wei Jingzhuo leaned back, propped his head up with one hand, and chuckled lazily, "It hasn't even started yet, and A-Wan is already admitting defeat. That's not good." Then he added, "Those who get concessions from me must pay a price. A-Wan, have you thought about what price you're willing to pay?"
