Chapter 141 Citywide Search

Su Wan sighed when she saw that the Western Rong Crown Prince Danma and Chu Mingyao had actually been captured and brought back.

All that effort was for nothing in the end.

The military officer who captured the Western Rong prince and his wife must be the one who communicated with Ge Fanghai. She was too far away to see clearly, so she asked the captain of the guards, "That officer is dressed in Northwest Army uniform. Can you recognize him?"

The captain of the guards squinted for a long time before saying, "Madam, it's too far. If we can get back to the General's Mansion, we'll know who this person is."

Once we return to the general's mansion and check who is absent from the Northwest Camp, we can immediately find out the true identity of this military officer.

One of the guards said, "Captain, we can get closer and maybe we'll be able to recognize him."

The captain of the guards nodded and said to Su Wan, "Madam, you should stay here and not go out. We'll go ahead and identify the military officer."

Su Wan agreed and hid in the shadows with the others.

The two walked forward in the darkness, arriving at the cavalry's usual route. By then, half a cavalry unit had already passed by. Prince Danma of the Western Rong and Chu Mingyao had just passed by. The two men appeared calm on horseback, but Danma's weapon was gone, and his entourage was nowhere to be seen.

Next to arrive were Ge Fanghai and the military officer.

Then Ge Fanghai laughed and said, "Fortunately, the general realized something was wrong and came to intercept us in time, otherwise I would have been in real trouble."

The military officer said, "My scouts told me that the Crown Prince and his wife of the Western Rong should arrive in Youzhou today. But I haven't seen them, so I guessed they must have come to Suiyang."

"General, you are truly wise. I could never have thought of such a thing."

"Lord Ge, if this matter is leaked, we will both be in grave danger. We must be on guard. What exactly has delayed you, sir?"

"Well, it's strange, there was a woman who beat a drum in the middle of the night to appeal for justice..."

"Is that really true? What was that woman's name?"

Hearing the sound, the captain of the guards approached and peeked out from behind the low wall, only to be greatly disappointed. The officer's face was covered with a veil, revealing only his eyes.

Unable to identify them, the captain of the guards had no choice but to hide again, letting Ge Fanghai and the military officer pass by.

He returned to Su Wan and said, "Madam, that military officer had a mask covering his face, so we can't recognize him."

Su Wan said, "This person is very cautious. I have had some contact with the generals of the Northwest Camp. I was present when many of the generals went to see my husband. If I could get closer, I might be able to recognize his voice."

For a period of time, she kicked Wei Jingzhuo out of his room. Wei Jingzhuo had no choice but to handle military affairs in the courtyard next door. Whenever a general came to visit, he would pass by her courtyard gate, and she saw many of these generals; she remembered the voices of many of them.

The captain of the guards said, "Madam, you must not act rashly; that would be too dangerous. Let's do this: first, return to the inn to rest. At the same time, send someone back to inform the lord of what has happened here, so that he can send troops to rescue us. We can also find out which general is missing from the Northwest Army."

Su Wan said, "Good idea. But who can climb the city wall?"

In her eyes, this was too difficult; probably only a gecko could handle it with ease.

The captain of the guards laughed and said, "Madam, you are overthinking it. We were personally selected by the lord, and our only shortcoming is that we are illiterate."

He summoned two guards and instructed them, "Go back to the general's mansion immediately and inform the lord. Tell him that there has been a traitor in the Northwest Army. The lord will know who is missing once he checks the Northwest camp. Also, the gates of Suiyang County are closed, and the lady is trapped here. Tell the lord to come and rescue her as soon as possible."

The two guards nodded in agreement and said to Su Wan, "Madam, we'll be going now."

Su Wan was still a little worried and said to the captain of the guards, "Isn't that a bit too few? It would be safer to send a few more people."

The captain of the guards said, "Madam, we only have ten men here. If two of them go to the general's mansion to report the news, then we will only have eight men left. We must ensure your safety first."

After seeing the two guards off, the captain of the guards led Su Wan back to the inn, where they met up with Zhao Fu and the two guards who had stayed behind.

When Zhao Fu saw Su Wan return, he asked in surprise, "Miss, why are you so disheveled? Did something happen?"

Su Wan completely trusted Zhao Fu and told him everything that had happened after she met Chu Yi.

Zhao Fu broke out in a cold sweat upon hearing this and said, "Miss, you've taken too much risks by going to the county government office. If you're caught as a thief, your father, if he were alive, would surely be devastated. He has a lifelong reputation for integrity."

As Su Wan combed her hair, she said, "The magistrate of Suiyang County is involved in more than just matters concerning Baohe Hall. He seems to be connected to a conspiracy related to the General's Mansion."

Zhao Fu asked, "Miss, what are you going to do next?"

Su Wan said, "The city gates are closed now. We can't get out, so let's rest at the inn for the night. The city gates will open naturally during the day, and then we can sneak out. I haven't gotten the land deed for Baohe Hall yet, but compared to that conspiracy, that's not important anymore."

Zhao Fu nodded and said, "Indeed, if there really is a conspiracy targeting the General's Mansion, Miss should of course deal with this matter first. But Miss, you have never done these things since you were a child, can you handle it?"

"It's alright, I've already sent someone to inform my husband," Su Wan said, gathering her hair into a neat ponytail. "He will naturally come to help us."

It was already two in the morning, and all the guest rooms in the inn were dark and occupied. Su Wan left Zhao Fu's room, returned to her own, drank some water, lay down on the bed, and thought she would get some sleep first.

Just as I closed my eyes, I suddenly heard a commotion outside. Someone was banging on the door in the lobby on the first floor.
