The two dared not utter a sound, but exchanged glances.
The man's gaze translates to: Miss, were you also caught cheating on your lover? It doesn't seem like it; you're so neatly dressed.
Su Wan's gaze translates to: "Brother, who are you to dare to cuckold your county magistrate? I'm truly impressed."
With a bang, the door to the room was kicked open, and two soldiers rushed into the room.
The two hung outside the window, barely daring to breathe. Su Wan was alright; she was still dressed. The man, however, only had a bed sheet wrapped around his waist, shivering incessantly, whether from the cold or from fear, it was hard to tell.
The third wife next door had reached out to pull the man, but when she heard the voices from next door, she was so frightened that she withdrew her hand.
"Where are they?" a soldier in the room asked.
The other replied, "I didn't see it."
Su Wan's heart pounded as she carefully moved along the edge away from the man.
She had instinctively bolted the door. Now she realized how foolish that was. The door was bolted from the inside, and no one was in the room, so they must have gone through the window.
She moved to the other side of the windowsill and reached for a protruding piece of wood to hold onto. A soldier in the room asked, "Isn't it under the bed either?"
“No,” the other said.
The soldier who had questioned them earlier said, "The door is locked from the inside. The people inside have escaped... The window is open; look out the window."
Su Wan was nearly scared out of her wits.
She pressed herself against the outer wall of the inn, closed her eyes, and prepared to pray, but she didn't know what gods existed in this era.
Whether it was good luck or just a coincidence, the soldier in the room peeked out and immediately spotted the man wrapped in a white sheet.
"It was a man, wrapped in a bed sheet, and he's already been moved to the next room!"
The man was large and wore a white sheet, making him particularly conspicuous in the darkness. The soldier, seeing him, assumed he was the escapee and didn't turn back to look in Su Wan's direction, retreating into his own shadow.
Su Wan breathed a sigh of relief, patted her chest, and thought to herself, "That was terrifying!"
The soldiers rushed into the next room, ignoring the Third Madam's cries, and several large hands reached out of the window to pull the man into the room like a radish.
