Chapter 157 Thugs Blocking the Road

The carriage left the restaurant and continued its journey.

Lin Fei slurped down the porridge and then happily ate the fried dough sticks with both hands, making the maidservant swallow her saliva.

Halfway through the meal, Lin Fei held up a small piece of fried dough in her hand and handed it to Bai Zhiyi: "Cousin, you should have some too."

Bai Zhiyi was quite hungry, but when she saw Lin Fei holding a fried dough stick for her, she couldn't bring herself to eat it. So she patted Lin Fei's head and said, "Little Fei is so considerate. Your cousin isn't hungry."

As the carriage rounded the foot of the mountain, the driver said to Bai Zhiyi, "Miss Bai, the road ahead is really blocked. What should we do?"

Bai Zhiyi lifted the curtain and peeked out. Sure enough, two rows of roadblocks had been erected with wooden frames, completely blocking the road ahead. Behind the wooden frames were two tents, and in front of the tents were two bonfires, around which a dozen or so soldiers were warming themselves.

She had seen Emperor Kangping's secret edict and the plans on her aunt's desk, and guessed that the roadblock was to prevent unrelated people from going to Ganxi Valley. If they noticed the ambushing troops and informed the general's entourage on the road, it would be troublesome.

She didn't want to deal with these soldiers unless absolutely necessary. She said to the coachman, "Driver, can we go around them?"

The driver said, "Miss Bai, if you want to take a detour, you'll have to go back first. Turn east at the restaurant and go to the nearby village..."

Bai Zhiyi said, "That's too troublesome. Is there a shortcut?"

The coachman said, "We can definitely walk around it. But the carriage can't. Apart from the main road, the roads around it are all difficult to travel. And with such heavy snow, there are stones on the ground that could injure the horses' hooves and make them unable to move at all."

Bai Zhiyi thought for a moment. Even if she and her maid could walk in the snow, Lin Fei couldn't. They would still have to take a carriage along the official road.

“Let’s keep going,” she said to the driver, “and see if we can persuade them to let us through.”

The coachman agreed and drove the carriage forward until they reached the roadblock.

Several soldiers with weapons were patrolling back and forth in front of the roadblock. They were surprised to see that the carriage not only did not turn around, but continued to come over.

A burly, ugly man with a face full of scars stepped forward and said, "Stop! Can't you see the road is blocked? Go, go, go back."

Bai Zhiyi said to her maid, "Xiao Ju, go down and negotiate with them to let us pass."

The maid agreed and got out of the car: "Who are you? Why are you blocking the road in broad daylight?"

The ugly man looked at the maid and said, "You have a foul mouth, girl. You're so arrogant right from the start."

The maid said, "This is the land of the Great Jin. We are citizens of the Great Jin, why are you blocking the road and preventing us from passing?"

The ugly man laughed loudly and said, "So what if we're from the Great Jin? This is the Lin family's territory. We are the Lin family's army. We are here on the master's orders to temporarily block the road. No one is allowed to pass."

This man was not only rude in appearance but also spoke rudely. The maid was somewhat angry and said, "Do you even know who you're stopping?"

Who is it?

“She’s the daughter of the Duke of Shangjing,” the maid said, emphasizing her words. “Get out of the way right now.”

The ugly man, who was already laughing, laughed even harder upon hearing this. He turned to the soldiers behind him and said, "Did you hear that? She said the carriage contains the daughter of the Duke's mansion."

The soldiers behind him also burst into laughter, showing absolutely no respect.

They were a privately hired army by the Lin family, composed of thugs and hooligans, and could not be compared to a regular army at all. However, they were enough to block roads and scare ordinary people.

The maidservant shouted angrily, "What are you laughing at? I'm telling the truth!"

The ugly man stopped laughing and said, "Get lost. You say you're the daughter of a noble family from the Duke's mansion? I'm the master of the Duke's mansion. What kind of noble lady from a Duke's mansion would come out in this weather? Do you think we've never seen a noble lady from the Duke's mansion before?"

The maid had no choice but to return to the carriage and say to Bai Zhiyi, "Miss, they are completely unreasonable and have gone too far. They actually dared to say he is your father..."

Bai Zhiyi had no time to pay attention to these things and said, "Since they are the Lin family's private army, they should know Xiao Fei, right?"

The maid said, "Miss, you are right. Why don't we let the Third Young Master go and talk to him?"

Bai Zhiyi approached Lin Fei and said, "Xiao Fei, can you do your cousin a favor?"

After finishing her fried dough stick, Lin Fei wiped her mouth with her sleeve and said, "Cousin, I heard everything just now. Those people wouldn't let you pass, so I'm going to scold them for you."

Seeing how sensible Lin Fei was, Bai Zhiyi affectionately patted his little head and said, "Little Fei has really helped his cousin a lot."

Lin Fei said, "My cousin bought me fried dough sticks and porridge, so it's only right that I help her."

The maid led Lin Fei out of the carriage and then to the man.

When the ugly man saw the maid bring a child back again, he said, "Why are you here again?"

These people were never exactly respectable. The Zheng family only hired them to protect the caravans; they were never allowed into the Lin residence. They had never met Lin Fei before, and naturally didn't recognize him.

The maid said, "Take a good look, this is your third young master, Lin Fei. Hurry up and move the roadblocks so we can pass."

Lin Fei pointed her little finger at the ugly man and said, "How dare you block my way! I'll tell my mother to fire you right away."

"Who are you trying to fool? My young master is always followed by a large group of servants wherever he goes," the ugly man glared at Lin Fei, "Where did you come from, you little brat? Get lost!"

Lin Fei had always been domineering in the Lin family, and no one had ever dared to be so fierce to him. Seeing someone with such a menacing appearance for the first time, he burst into tears, covering his face with his hands and crying, "Cousin, please save me! I'm scared!"
