The backyard of the General's Mansion at Xiping Pass.
Su Wan, with her silver tongue, won over Meng Ruliu. Meng Ruliu, a straightforward woman, immediately decided to become sworn sisters with Su Wan.
This really confused Su Wan.
She intended to cultivate a good relationship, but it hadn't reached the point of becoming sworn siblings. Besides, Wei Jingzhuo was still planning to capture Xiping Pass; how could she possibly become sworn siblings with the daughter of an enemy general? That was too outrageous.
Without waiting for her consent, Meng Ruliu said casually, "My sister will be seventeen for the New Year, and I will be eighteen. You can call me sworn sister, and I will call you sworn sister."
“We don’t have to go through all that trouble like men swearing brotherhood,” she swept the things off the table, picked up an incense burner, lit an incense stick, and took two sticks for herself. She gave one to Su Wan and kept the other in her hand. “Just bow to heaven and earth once, and that’s it.”
Su Wan had never dealt with this before, so she quickly stopped Meng Ruliu and asked, "Sister, is there anything special about our sworn sisterhood?"
Meng Ruliu said, "My sister probably doesn't understand? We've become sworn sisters, and we'll address each other as sisters. If you're in trouble, I'll definitely help you. And vice versa. If I break this vow, may I be struck by lightning."
Su Wan thought to herself, "If my husband wants to seize Xiping Pass, he will definitely become enemies with Meng Kuan, which will be troublesome. I, a modern person, don't care about these ancient things at all, but Sister Meng will be caught in the middle. Maybe I should just tell the truth?"
She had thought it through and was about to speak when Meng Ruliu had already knelt on the ground.
“Sister, kneel down and bow with me,” Meng Ruliu said, pulling Su Wan’s hand.
Su Wan said, "Since Sister Meng is so sincere to me, I won't hide it anymore. I have a reason for coming to Xiping Pass."
Meng Ruliu asked, "What is it?"
Su Wan hesitated for a moment, but she couldn't bear to deceive Meng Ruliu, so she told her why she had come here.
She had expected Meng Ruliu to be furious upon hearing this, but to her surprise, Meng Ruliu jumped up in delight and said, "So you are Su Wan? The goddess who made the Western Rong and the Great Jin cease hostilities?"
Su Wan nodded and said, "It's me."
Meng Ruliu held her hands tightly, her eyes full of admiration: "Sister, I never thought I would meet such a heroine as you."
The legend of the goddess healing the King of Xirong and bringing an end to the war between the Great Jin and Xirong had long been known throughout Youzhou, and was also a household name in Xiping Pass. Meng Ruliu usually admired women with strong martial arts skills the most and practiced martial arts every day. But Su Wan had actually managed to bring an end to the war between Xirong and Great Jin, and she admired Su Wan immensely in private.
A seemingly weak woman, powerless to even kill a chicken, ventured deep into the Western Rong camp, a place teeming with wolves and tigers. With her silver tongue, she persuaded Lu Bang, a general under the Western Rong king, to commit suicide, and all the Western Rong generals knelt down on the spot...
Su Wan felt something was off as she listened, and quickly said, "Stop, stop, Sister Meng, don't overthink it. It's not like that at all."
Folk tales have a characteristic of becoming increasingly fantastical, eventually reaching a level of mystical grandeur. Surprisingly, even Meng Ruliu believed them wholeheartedly.
Su Wan didn't want Meng Ruliu to misunderstand her, so she said, "That's all just hearsay. The whole thing was uneventful; the King of Xirong just invited me over..."
“It’s alright, I’ve decided you’re my sister now,” Meng Ruliu patted her shoulder, making her wince. “I’ll talk to my father. I’ve long disliked Emperor Kangping’s cowardly behavior. He’s been withholding grain from the General, trying to starve the Northwest camp. My father has said that the General is a hero who pacified the Northwest, yet he treats him like this. He doesn’t dare to be open about it, only resorting to underhanded tactics.”
Su Wan was both amused and exasperated. She never expected things to be so ridiculous; Meng Ruliu was actually going to try and persuade Meng Kuan on her behalf.
Many people were unhappy that Emperor Kangping was not sending provisions to the Grand General, but instead ordering him to defend against the Western Rong.
Although this was a good thing, what if Meng Kuan disagreed and arrested her daughter along with them? Su Wan still felt it was best to be cautious and asked Meng Ruliu, "Sister-in-law, what if General Meng disagrees?"
Meng Ruliu said, "Don't worry, my sworn sister. Since we've become sworn sisters, I'll see this through to the end. If my father doesn't agree, I'll personally escort you and His Highness the Crown Prince out of the pass, and I will never let the soldiers harm you in the slightest."
With Meng Ruliu's words of reassurance, Su Wan was completely at ease.
The two walked hand in hand out of the house, out of the courtyard gate, and headed towards the front yard.
The guards gasped when they saw the maids waiting outside the courtyard.
This Doctor Su is truly a miracle doctor! Less than an hour after entering, my young lady has already left the room. And judging from her expression, she's practically radiant; she must have taken some kind of magic elixir!
The two arrived at the reception room, where a guard said, "Miss, the general is talking inside with Doctor Su's servants and has told us not to let anyone in."
Meng Ruliu glared at him with her phoenix eyes: "Am I not allowed in either? Get out of the way!"
The guard was startled and quickly stood aside.
Meng Ruliu pulled Su Wan up the steps to the entrance of the hall, where they saw Meng Kuan and Wei Jingzhuo sitting on either side of a table, talking in hushed tones.
"Father, I'm here."
Meng Ruliu shook Su Wan's hand, signaling her to wait a moment, and strode towards Meng Kuan.
When Meng Kuan saw her appear, he was overjoyed and stood up, saying, "Daughter, you are indeed healed. You truly are a goddess."
Meng Ruliu stopped in surprise and asked, "Father, you know my sworn sister's identity?"
Su Wan then walked up to Wei Jingzhuo and whispered, "A-Jin, what are you talking about with General Meng?"
Wei Jingzhuo said, "I have already said everything I wanted to say to General Meng to stand on my side."
Meng Kuan smiled at Meng Ruliu and said, "His Highness the Crown Prince has already explained everything to Father. Father was just about to go find you."
