Su Wan handed over the evidence provided by the doctor, along with the intelligence she had obtained, to the magistrate of An County, asking him to handle the matter.
She also paid close attention to the girl named Qiu Jie and similarly asked Magistrate An to investigate her background. Magistrate An said it would take a few days to find out.
That evening, she took Zhao Fu in a carriage back to the Su family residence in the north of Suiyang County.
That place was already her residence, so naturally she wanted to go back and take a look, and she even planned to stay there for a while.
Wei Jingzhuo was deploying troops at Xiping Pass, and she didn't want to distract him. She felt that if she also stayed at Xiping Pass, Wei Jingzhuo's passionate nights would affect his strategic planning during the day. She decided to stay there for half a month, under the pretext of dealing with the fire at Baohe Hall, to handle some necessary matters.
On the way, Zhao Fu said, "Miss, the words on the back pillars of Baohe Hall, although they may not have been written by Yang, are very likely to have been done by someone Yang hired."
Su Wan felt the same way.
The doctors at Baohetang did their best to treat Miss Qiu's brother, and although they couldn't save him, they had done their utmost. Miss Qiu didn't seem to be a troublemaker; she paid the full amount due for the consultation.
If someone really wants to cause trouble, why would they readily hand over money?
But Yang was different. In Yang's eyes, Baohetang was her and Su Heng's property. How could she swallow this insult when Lu Zhao took it back with just a few words?
Not to mention they were kicked out of the house.
From any perspective, Yang is the most likely suspect.
The carriage stopped at the entrance of the Su family mansion. Zhao Fu personally opened the car door for Su Wan, who got out of the carriage and looked at the mansion under the moonlight.
The gate was still the same gate she knew, though the horizontal plaque above it had been removed and hadn't been replaced. Two strings of red lanterns hung on either side of the gate, swaying slightly in the night breeze, casting ever-changing red shadows on the white stone steps in front of it.
Returning to this familiar place, she looked at the familiar manor and felt a pang of emotion.
She left Youzhou at the age of thirteen and lived here for three years, a period filled with unpleasant memories. But this was, after all, the place where she spent those three years, and also the place where she was married. It was from here that her life underwent a dramatic transformation.
The courtyard had already been cleaned and renovated by Lu Lin and his siblings, just waiting for her to return and inspect it. As soon as the carriage stopped in front of the gate, Lu Lin led Lu Zhao out to open the gate and greet her.
“Mistress, the courtyard has been cleaned up,” Lu Zhao said with a smile. “I didn’t expect there to be so many rooms in this courtyard. It must have been tiring to clean.”
Su Wan entered the gate and walked inside, with two servants leading the way with lanterns in front, Zhao Fu and the Lu siblings accompanying her, and the guards following at the very back.
She said, "This yard is big enough. After I leave, you and your siblings can live here with Uncle Zhao, and bring your family over to help me look after the yard. You don't need to go back to Linyuan Village."
Lu Zhao was overjoyed and clapped his hands, saying, "Really? Then I'll go pick a good room... no, I'll pick a private yard. It has to be a place where I can grow potatoes."
“Either way is fine,” Su Wan smiled. “I’m just staying here for a while anyway. You can discuss with Uncle Zhao and make sure we don’t demolish this place.”
Zhao Fu, leaning on his cane, followed behind her and said, "Miss, but if I stay here, it's too far from Baohe Hall."
Su Wan said, "It's alright. Anyway, Baohetang has been burned down. I plan to rebuild it at a location closer to here. You can still take care of this residence from now on."
Zhao Fu was deeply moved and nodded, saying, "As you wish, Miss."
"Stop gossiping with the mistress," Lu Lin said to Su Wan, pulling Lu Zhao aside as she was about to speak. "Mistress, I heard that the Fifth Prince is leading his army to Xiping Pass. I also want to go to Xiping Pass and fight alongside the lord."
Su Wan stopped in front of the artificial hill, turned to Lu Lin and said, "War is not child's play."
Lu Lin puffed out his chest: "Being a bandit is nothing compared to being a general. I, Madam, am a very capable fighter. As long as I achieve great things at Xiping Pass, I can become a general and bring glory to my ancestors."
Su Wan smiled and said, "You really think you can become a general? Are you really confident?"
Lu Lin got even more excited, put his hands on his hips and said, "Mistress, to be honest, with my martial arts skills, I'm second to none except for the Lord..."
Lu Zhao quickly stopped him: "Brother, stop bragging. You probably can't even compare to Guard Lin under the Lord."
Lu Lin said, "How did I boast? I'm telling the truth."
Su Wan shook her head and said, "Not necessarily, I also think you're not up to the task." After saying that, she walked around the artificial hill in front of her and headed towards the brightly lit front hall.
Upon hearing this, Lu Lin quickly caught up with Su Wan and said, "Mistress, my sister has no judgment, but do you also underestimate me?"
Su Wan said, "I don't underestimate you. To be honest, you probably can't even beat General Meng's daughter."
Seeing Lu Lin's arrogant demeanor, she wanted to put him in his place. After all, the battle at Xiping Pass would be a real fight. Lu Lin wasn't a real soldier, just a bandit; going to Xiping Pass would be too dangerous for him.
Unexpectedly, these words stirred up a hornet's nest, and Lu Lin jumped up in a huge panic.
"Mistress! You...you actually said I can't even beat a woman. I'm furious! I'm going to Xiping Pass right now to find that General Meng."
After saying that, Lu Lin turned and ran. Lu Zhao shouted but couldn't stop him. He only chased after him for a few steps before Lu Lin disappeared from sight.
When Lu Zhao returned, he pouted and said to Su Wan, "Mistress, my brother is furious. He really knows how to go to Xiping Pass."
"Don't worry, he won't be angry for long," Su Wan said confidently to Lu Zhao. "Go to the backyard and choose a room. Later, go to Linyuan Village and bring your family over. Uncle Zhao lives in the front yard. If anything happens, discuss it with Uncle Zhao. He's my housekeeper."
