Chapter 183 Keep yourself busy

The sounds of battle rose from the walls of Xiping Pass, thick smoke billowed, and the garrison of Xiping Pass and the army of the Fifth Prince were engaged in fierce fighting.

Su Wan stayed quietly inside the house, listening intently to the sounds outside.

As the enemy was about to attack the city, Wei Jingzhuo told her to leave the city wall immediately. She didn't think much of it and wanted to stay and see what an ancient siege battle was like. Meng Ruliu didn't care about anything else, picked her up like a chick, and carried her down the city wall to a house far away from it.

After listening for a while, she became somewhat frightened and said to Meng Ruliu in front of her, "Sister-in-law, is the rain of arrows fired by the enemy really able to block out the sun?"

Meng Ruliu had already removed her armor and was sitting in a chair eating an apple, her legs crossed and propped up on the edge of the table. She said, "Haven't you ever seen two armies clash before, my sworn sister? I have. This is a large army besieging a city; the arrows coming down are like rain."

"Will A-Jin get hurt?" Su Wan stood up worriedly.

Although Wei Jingzhuo carried that frying pan that could bring good luck, it could only protect his chest. What if an arrow hit Wei Jingzhuo's face?

"Don't worry, the generals are all directing the battle from the gate towers of the city wall, and the arrows can't reach them," Meng Ruliu threw away the apple and pushed one of the two large bowls of beef noodles on the table to Su Wan, "Sister, eat it while it's hot, you'll have the strength to fight if you're full."

The grain reserves at Xiping Pass were originally enough to last for two years. Prince Danma of the Western Rong thanked Su Wan for sharing potato fields and also sent a large herd of cattle and sheep. Now even ordinary soldiers could have beef and mutton at every meal.

Su Wan picked up a piece of beef and put it in her mouth, chewing slowly, but found it tasteless.

She was worried about Wei Jingzhuo's safety, concerned about her younger brother Su Yuze's safety, and also worried about whether Xiping Pass could be defended. With so many things weighing on her mind, even eating felt meaningless.

Meng Ruliu seemed to see through her worries, swallowed the noodles in her mouth, and patted her shoulder with a smile: "Sister, worrying won't solve anything."

“And you’re talking about me,” Su Wan said. “You’ve been worried for months too.”

Meng Ruliu blushed: "I just ran into a jerk, and I'm still hung up on him. Today I smashed two stinky men with a hammer, and it felt so much better. It's a pity my dad's afraid I'll get hurt, so he won't let me help defend the city."

Su Wan's eyes lit up, and she looked up and said, "Sister, I have something private to say, but I don't know if I should?"

"Stop beating around the bush," Meng Ruliu said, lifting the bowl and slurping down the rest of the noodle soup before placing the empty bowl on the table. "We're sworn brothers, so your business is my business. Just tell me."

Su Wan told Meng Ruliu about her younger brother Su Yuze being kidnapped.

Upon hearing this, Meng Ruliu flew into a rage and slammed her hand on the table, cracking it. Su Wan quickly picked up both bowls, saying, "Sister-in-law, please be gentle."

"You didn't tell His Highness?"

"No, I was afraid of distracting him, so I didn't dare to say it."

Meng Ruliu stood up angrily, paced back and forth a few times, and gradually calmed her breathing before saying, "Sister, I've thought about it carefully, and I'm afraid this wasn't done by the Fifth Prince."

Su Wan put the bowl aside and asked, "Why do you say that?"

“As you know, I used to live in the capital,” Meng Ruliu said. “I also know a bit about Wei Shao. Although he’s not a very talented man, he wouldn’t stoop to kidnapping someone else’s brother.”

"Isn't it Wei Shao?" Su Wan asked, somewhat disappointed.

Meng Ruliu said, "He is a prince after all, and he should always cherish his reputation. How could he do such a despicable thing that only bandits and robbers would do?"

Su Wan said, "But Lin Qingfeng said that the people who kidnapped my brother are highly skilled in martial arts and are definitely not ordinary bandits."

When it comes to superb martial arts skills, Chu Yi's image flashes through her mind.

I haven't seen Chu Yi since we parted ways in Suiyang.

She wasn't without suspicion of Chu Yi, but she simply couldn't believe he would do such a thing. Firstly, Chu Yi was also a prince of Southern Chu, and he had never laid a hand on her. Moreover, he had risked his life to protect her during Ge Fanghai and Xie Maoliang's pursuit; she absolutely refused to believe that Chu Yi was the one who kidnapped Su Yuze.

There's no way someone in this world would save her and then kidnap her brother.

If such a person truly exists, they can only be a mental patient.

Chu Yi is a normal person, so it could never be him.

“Even if it’s not Wei Shao, it could be someone related to Wei Shao,” Meng Ruliu said. “It could be his mother, Consort Li.”

"Consort Li?" Su Wan scratched her head. "Sister, you're saying Consort Li is the mastermind behind it all?"

Meng Ruliu said, "It should be her. This woman is no innocent. I knew about her when I went to the capital. She bewitched the emperor in the harem and ousted all the other concubines. After the empress passed away, she gained the emperor's exclusive favor and was determined to make Wei Shao the emperor..."

“But my sworn sister…” Su Wan said, “Why did Consort Li travel all this way to kidnap my brother? Even if she wanted to help Wei Shao, she didn’t need to go through all this trouble, did she?”

“That makes sense,” Meng Ruliu frowned, looking at the roof. “Then who could it be?”

Since we don't know who kidnapped Su Yuze, we can't go to rescue him.

The two were deep in thought when, before they knew it, the shouts of battle outside had gradually ceased.

Lin Qingfeng entered the room and said, "Madam, Miss Meng. My lord sent me to tell you that the enemy attacked the city three times in a row, but we have repelled them all. Xiping Pass is as solid as a rock and has not suffered a single scratch."

Su Wan stood up, took Meng Ruliu's hand and said, "Sister-in-law, let's go, let's put this matter aside for now."

We don't know who kidnapped Su Yuze, and there's nothing we can do but wait. Just worrying here won't help.

The two left the courtyard and headed towards the city wall. Lin Qingfeng led a group of guards to accompany them.
