Chapter 2 Preparing to Escape

After tonight, he must take his sister and run away together!

As the footsteps faded into the distance, Su Wan sat on the ground, leaning against the wall, squinting as she pondered her future plans while munching on a steamed bun. However, the bun was too hard; after a few bites, she only managed to scrape off some crumbs. In a huff, she put the bun on the table.

As night fell, a waning crescent moon hung low in the sky, like a golden basin sinking into the depths.

The sky was a cold, deep blue, with countless stars appearing and disappearing intermittently.

"Miss, the meal is here." The maid quietly brought in a tray.

The food brought by the maid this time was much better than before, with two small plates of green vegetables, a bowl of rice, and a pot of tea.

Perhaps Su Heng and his wife wanted to ensure she could get married smoothly tomorrow, or perhaps they knew she hadn't resisted fiercely after waking up today, so they "kindly" gave her some good food to make her obedient.

But no matter which one, you need to be well-fed before you have the energy to run.

Su Wan was terribly hungry. She picked up her bowl and chopsticks, ready to eat, when suddenly her hand stopped. She brought the rice closer and smelled it carefully, her face darkening.

The rice had a distinctly unusual odor. It seemed to be mixed with some kind of drug.

An ordinary person would certainly not be able to smell the difference, but for her, a medical doctoral student, distinguishing the smell of drugs is just a basic skill.

Su Heng and his wife were planning to marry her off to someone else to bring them good luck, so the rice was probably still mixed with a sleeping potion to prevent her from escaping.

She glanced towards the door. The maid who hadn't gone far was peeking back. Seeing Su Wan looking at her, she turned her head away and moved further away from the door.

The attempt to cover it up only makes it more obvious.

She pretended not to see the other person's subtle movements, and then, taking advantage of their inattention, poured some food into her sleeve.

When the maid returned, she saw that half of the rice in the bowl had been eaten, and then she left with a smile.

As soon as the maid left, Su Wan emptied the rice from her sleeve and stuffed it into a hidden corner. Then she lay on the bed and pretended to fall asleep.

The stars and moon were dim, and the pitch-black courtyard felt even more desolate. Only a few lanterns under the eaves glowed faintly in the night, their tassels swaying gently in the wind, casting shadowy reflections on the nearby flowers, plants, and trees.

Su Wan opened her eyes, tiptoed to her feet, and prepared to leave.

Suddenly, the door was kicked open with a bang. A long shadow of a man was cast on the ground.

"Hey! Cousin, where do you want to go?"
